Yes this part seems to be completely off. I just measure it again this morning.

Agilent MSO6014A Not Booting

 

Evening all. I'm new to the group and appreciate all the advice and wisdom on here. I'm now needing some assistance with an Agilent MSO6014A not booting up.
?
I bought the 'scope, around year ago, second-hand off eBay. Analogue channels don't work properly (that's for another day), but digital channels work fine (even got the logic analyser pods included in the sale).
?
I've been using it in logic analyser mode the past week to debug SPI on an MCU, powering off the 'scope between uses and powering it on the following day with no problems.
?
Powered 'scope off yesterday afternoon using the front-panel power button, and later turned it on again and it won't boot.
?
The only thing I did differently when powering off this time around, was to save the setup I was using for debugging to the internal (C:\setups) memory. It didn't auto-save a couple of days ago so didn't want to have to set up all the digital channels again if it happened again this time around.
?
I've tried doing the emergency restore procedure from USB drive using sys6000.bin (v6.20, from EEVblog forum, unmodified) and sys6000.jzp, lib6000.jzp, lpk6000,jzp, gsp6000.jzp (from Keysight website, all latest versions) but no luck.
?
I connected to the debug UART using the details in on the EEVblog thread to see what is going on and got the following boot log:

I've highlighted the concerning bits in bold.

Even with the USB inserted, the 'scope detects it and loads sys6000.bin properly, but still fails on Error in boot line: machine check.
?
I noticed that the bootargs on my 'scope differed from those in the boot log from another EEVblog forum user's post, so tried changed them to match (host name : bootHost, target name (tn) : a-m6014a-[also tried a-d6014a-]) but still no luck - boot still fails on the machine check.
?
Looking at the boot log and NVRAM error, and the fact that the 'scope failed to auto-save setup a couple of days ago, I'm wondering if it's an NVRAM/checksum issue, which is also causing the machine check to fail?
?
Is there a procedure to re-init the NVRAM on the MSO6000 series, or any other suggestions as to what to try next?
?

On the DSP/ADC module A3 the 5V rail is now 4.97V (was 4.70V typical) and the 3V3 rail is now 3.24V (was 2.97V and very drifty).

I disassembled the main firmware and worked out how it does the power on testing of the power supplies and this gave me the pass/fail limits for all the supplies.?
I was able to trace through the power supply distribution and see where it was losing voltage in a poor connection. A thermal camera helped a lot here. It's now all fixed and fine again!

I also found out a few things about how it manages the internal 10 MHz reference and how to adjust the high stability 10 MHz OCXO. So that is now calibrated.
?
I am so pleased, I thought it was slowly dying on me. There's no way I could afford to send it to Keysight for repair.

I should be able to fix the other E5052A as well as it has a similar issue with a sagging 5V and a sagging 3V3 supply.

Incidentally, there should not be DC on the output—100 uf capacitor C18, in series with 39 Ohm resistor R35, connects the emitter of emitter follower Q7 to the output BNC socket. C18 should block the DC seen at Q7 emitter (-9.6VDC); perhaps C18 is shorted.

I've found my 466A to operate just fine on a pair of 9V transistor batteries. I wire battery tabs to the original mercury battery terminals and hold the 9V batteries in place with double-sticky foam tape. The 466A is thus totally isolated from anything other than the source and the load.

Paper original will be sent to Dave McGuire on Monday.

Back on this after a short break.

I'm experiencing what Gary Appel described a few posts back. The SL1 VCO module on an extender (per prior photo) can be adjusted (two potentiometers, one controlling detector voltage into the VCO, other controlling pretune DAC into the VCO) to lock across it's working range (the output of the 20-30 MHz signal at 11707A output), however, once back in position (no extender), the wandering problem returns. The reactive parts (varactor, trimmer cap and solenoid inductor) are "up close and personal" and possibly affected by proximity to the enclosure walls.

One observation (admittedly with the VCO module on it's extender) is that the VCO control voltage (coming out of SL1 phase detector, which goes to the SL1 VCO) seems to be working within a range of about -3.2 volts (below which the PLL never locks) and -1.2 volts (above which the PLL never locks. Not sure if this is a problem in the phase detector or perhaps the VCO is far off it's normal range due to (absence of) enclosure effects.

The adjustments section (5-33) begins with "set frequency to 5.55 MHz and adjust (two potentiometers on the VCO) for 0 volts at the test point (VCO control voltage) - this was not possible in any setting of the two potentiometers on the VCO module. Although I could find settings (of the two VCO module potentiometers) that would maintain lock across the 20-30 MHz range (11707A output port reflecting the composite low-frequency synthesizers), this was done with the A19 VCO board on an extender. When lock fails, the phase detector digital logic waveform (a duty cycle which gets smoothed into a continuous tuning voltage) ends up at 0% or 100% duty cycle. All of this provides a nice "moving parts" view of a PLL, but is indicative of a component-level problem probably on the phase detector or VCO module.

Advice received at this point will guide my next attempt (boards back in their shielded enclosures and test points accessed from the motherboard rather than equivalent points on the two boards themselves (the advice re measuring an enclosed test point is appreciated!)

When I worked on the 8660's and plugins more than 25 years ago, I had short lengths of bus wires with smaller gauge wire soldered to them and then they covered with heat shrink.? This allowed connections to be made with the boards inserted and with their covers secured.? ?With the lighter gauge wire soldered along side the heavier gauge wire, this created a shoulder that kept these probes from falling inside.? ?All I can remember was using a scope to adjust to adjust a waveform for symmetry as the frequency was stepped.? ?

My VCO frequency is wrong is should be 39.840 MHz. 39.840 MHz divide by 40 is 996 KHz.
I have a VCO frequency of 39.100 MHz. Divide by 40 : 977 KHz. -> The 2sd LO frequency I have. ?

Can I manualy tune this VCO or does it depend of another part of the circuit ? It this problem related with the LO2 TP14 signal ?

If we focus on the high band for now, 3 sources are involved: the 10 MHz reference, the 40 MHz VCXO and a VCO near 40 MHz (39.996 MHz).
