Re: ROM / EEPROM firmware dump
Hi, Caesar,
Suggestion: If you're OK with doing so, post it to Didier's site (KO4BB). It'll get widely preserved from there.
Thanks!

Re: 8753es VGA interface to laptop...
I'm using a Startech VGA to USB3.0 to capture the video, and mix it with a document camera and webcam using Open Broadcaster software (example below).? I have not tried full screen, but VGA scales to a large monitor does not look good.

I have a 16702A. It's working but I want to replace the hard drive with a scsi2sd v6 card I have. Now, as it's a 16702A it does not have the integrated cd drive and I don't have an external (or any, for that matter) scsi cd drive. Sure I can buy one but before
I do that, is there any way to install the .iso that is on archive.org without a cd drive ?
It may be a dumb question, forgive me in that case :)
Also, if I would get a cd drive off ebay, anything I would have to consider ?

Hp 8563E analyzer for sale refurbished price 1725Euro
For sale is one of Hp's top models. It goes from 9khz to 26.5Ghz.
It is synthezised controlled analyzer and measuring / counting frequency down to 1 Hz resolution.
It is an E model that has a resolution bandwidth of down to 1Hz. This means you can see signals 60-70dB down a few hz next to the center frequency. DSP process is used at the lowest bandwidths.
The E model has lower phase noise and lower noise floor which gives higher dynamic range.
In addition, it has mounted an HP?85620A memory module. Two software packages are installed on the module
85671A Phasenoise measurement
85672A Harmonic measurements etc. IMD etc
There is plenty of light on the screen and is super focused.
It measures accurately and complies to specs and works 100%.
One of the images shows the Frequency response from 10Mhz to 26.5Ghz. You can see that the response is flat throughout the area
The analyzer is in super fine condition with some traces of wear. The YIG tuned filter (RYTHM) has been refurbished.
Here is a link to Data on it.

Bostonman, Yes I think I still have the image. I finally sold this scope because I had an opportunity to get a DSO8104A.? I'm trying to upload everything I have on the 54832 but it's a big file. Whenever it's ready, I'll post the link. For now, this is the content of the C directory (it's not an image, but it might help
By any chance, were you able to find the drive to image? I can't communicate with the SSD in my scope because it has only 44 pins with (what I recently learned) Vcc on pin 41 and 42 and no other power connector. The USB adapter I have doesn't seem to output 5V on 41 and 42, so I need another adapter to connect 5V to them.

Re: ROM / EEPROM firmware dump
I knew about that, actually. I prefer to do it myself.
Not only do I prefer having the EEPROM in a socket, in case of failure (yes, I have seen them fail), but it is my view the fellow who knows how to do the code trick should post the process or tool to the group's file area for the sake of long-term preservation.
Thanks...

Example: My recent acquisition of an HP 8753C network analyzer. Enabling a couple of the nicer options required me to desolder the EEPROM, read it into a file, edit the appropriate bytes in the file, reprogram the device with the modified file and reinstall it (I installed a socket first).
Happy tweaking.

Re: ROM / EEPROM firmware dump
Memories!? I still have two BP Microsystems EP-1 programers for the older chips and an ee-tools for the newer stuff.? Those EP-1's sure programed a lot eproms in their day.? PC BIOS, TAPR TNC's, repeater controller boards and nurse call floor map eproms were burned on those EP1's.? Saved us a lot of money!? I even turned my PC clone into a full-fledged IBM PC and did some hacking on the old Apple two and on the Mac.? Back in the day you had to have or borrow a programmer or you were crippled.? Lately I am updating some AEA pk-232 TNC's and a couple of Kantronics TNC'S to a useful version.? I miss the old stuff.? I like the functionality of the newer equipment but just try to repair it after a few years.? I can component level support 35 year old computer equipment better than 10 year old equipment. That stuff is mostly board swap or buy a new one.? ??.??

Hello,
usually, you remove the EEPROMs and read them with an EEProm
reader.

Re: 8753es VGA interface to laptop...
Every 8753ES I've ever seen has a GPIB port.? I have a Prologix GPIB-ETHERNET. The also make a USB version for $150
If all you want are screen plots, a Prologix and KE5FX's freeware toolset are al you need.
I have an an Epiphan VGA2USB LR device (~$500) which works well. It has some quirks that I find annoying.? It needs a valid, stable VGA signal to record. Any change and it drops recording. ? As an example, you can't use it to record most PCs booting because any change of resolution or interruption in sync drops out of record. You need to manually restart it. I've not looked at the output of the 8753ES, but many instruments I have drop sync when I punch the system button to set up printing or captures.
There are other open source tools for grabbing screens and s-parameter data over the GPIB.

Re: ROM / EEPROM firmware dump
Andreas, ? The firmware usually resides in some sort of memory, most commonly a PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory), especially in the older HP equipment, an EPROM (Erasable PROM).? This could be an EEPROM (Electrically EPROM) but most commonly a UV EPROM which requires an ultraviolet light source to erase the chips. ? The goal is to be able to read, archive and program the chips.? There are multiple programmers that can do this task including ¡®stand-alone¡¯ programmers as well as programmers that require a computer to interface with.? The cheaper programmers generally don¡¯t offer ¡®built-in¡¯ protocols for a lot of chips, particularly programming the chips.? Reading the chips is usually much easier to accomplish but might require some sort of ¡®adapter¡¯ to allow you to connect the chip to the programmer if the ¡®pin-out¡¯ of the chip does not match the ¡®pin-out¡¯ of your programmer and it¡¯s selected chip.? These adapters can be found as well. ? The more esoteric the chip, the more important it is to find a programmer that supports that particular chip. ? I have several BP Microsystems programmers and Advin programmers.? These usually require a WinXP computer with a parallel port to connect to.? The software is available on the Web.? The first BP Micro programmer I got was an EP-1140 EPROM programmer.? It was very useful and supported most of the chips I found in my old equipment.? Thereafter, I became interested in a ¡®Universal Programmer¡¯ that would support EPROM¡¯s as well as many other chips including PIC¡¯s and others.? The first one of those I got was a BP-1200. ? I also have several Advin programmers.? They are a bit less ¡®user friendly¡¯ to use due to their software but are very good programmers.? You might want to look at an Advin MVP as a versatile ¡®Universal Programmer¡¯. ? The newer, and therefore more expensive, programmers will work with later operating systems and connect via USB. ? You can find small UV EPROM Erasers that will accommodate up to 8 ¨C 10 chips or go larger for one that would accommodate maybe 100 chips or more. ? Once the chip is ¡®read¡¯ the data can be saved, typically as a .BIN file or a HEX file. ? I¡¯m not sure if this is the type of information you were looking for but it won¡¯t take long to become ¡®fluent¡¯ in ¡®EPROM¡¯ once you get involved in this. ? Hope this helps. ? Joe ?

Washers that cushion the spacers between wafers ? Can you measure OD and maybe use a numbered drill bit for ID ? I have some of this kind of stuff hiding in drawers Mike

I'm in the process of repairing an Acton Labs VTVM. The RANGE switch was a Centralab model with steatite wafers and someone had broken the wafers - some of which were in pieces that made gluing them back together somewhat impractical. I have obtained glass-epoxy versions of those wafers and am reassembling the switch; however, the original damage was enough to destroy one of the tiny fiber washers that are used on the mounting strut assemblies.
Does anyone know where I could get one (or, maybe, a few) of those? I've searched the web and can't find them and the Electroswitch site (they bought Centralab) doesn't show them as available parts either. If you're familiar with them, they accommodate a #4 machine screw on the ID but the OD is very small as well and all I can find are "standard" #4 fiber washers which are too large.
I think these also are/were available in plastic or nylon and if there's a source for those, they would work as well.
Sorry for the long email for such a small request but I don't know anywhere else to look for these.
Thanks, Barry - N4BUQ
