If you manage to separate the metallic parts form dielectrics , it is possible on older connectors. I recommend a solution of boiling water and sodium bicarbonate to clean the parts the process can take a couple of hours. Sodium bicarbonate is a known antiacid and its easy to get . It reverts the corrosion and is the best to save gold plated surfaces. Of coarse you can rework the surfaces with electroplating.? Ing. Patricio A. FS 11672A 8660 extension cable kit
HP list, with all the interest in 8660’s recently, I can offer this 11672A cable kit for sale. It is complete, but as expected the foam has deteriorated, everything will need to be cleaned. Hard to see but the cables and connectors are in very good condition, looks like it has not had much use. I have an HP8714 VNA here, that we used to cart around the
country servicing power amps.?? After one visit to a MRI place,
the entire display was at 45' tilt!
Eventually we degaussed the case (well, the entire instrument!)
using a Helmholtz coil, a 24V 5A transformer and a Variac!
"Normal" (non tilted) service was restored!
Some years later, the source module went intermittent, an OC
somewhere in the signal path.?? I got it for free as a result.?
Sometimes it fixes itself.? I need to find or make an extender for
that module.

If you use methanol, please be extremely careful. Wear gloves, don't
inhale fumes, etc. Methanol poisoning is no joke. Read up on it
prior to use.

On original question +ve to top see image of mating connector viewed from "flat" side.  On PSU issue generally they are such a pig to get out and apart it is worth replacing all the small electrolytics. The big HV ones are generally OK. Just checking ESR is not enough. I'm not generally a fan of "shotgun" electrolytic replacement but decided to do it on the very similar PSU in my 8920a (worth looking at the 8920x PSU diagrams there aer some on the web). when I had it out following a main switch transistor failure. While all the caps looked OK and checked for in-circuit ESR (several are in parallel) 3 had started to leak th in one case the PCB was starting to burn.

Power-down is now fairly random - anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes.? I've replaced the CPU board SnapHat with a much better one (3.2V vs 0.5V!) and that seems to cure some of the oddness on startup (data out of range etc).
But a secondhand psu is $500 and up!? BTW the SA powers up perfectly again if I hit the on-button straight away, so it's hopefully not some sort of heat fault.? Maybe I need to shotgun the caps in the psu, or at least check all ESRs properly.
If anyone has any ideas about this power supply repair please let me know!

Hello Jeremy,
The 12VDC cable kit has the part number E4401-60066. Sometimes they
appear for sale on eBay. I don't know the polarity of the pins but you
can check with a multimeter which pin is the Ground pin and the other
one will be the +12VDC. Maybe the Ground pin is not the same as the
chassis ground but you can try, otherwise you will need to open the case
and check the PSU PCB to see which one is the Ground.
The Snaphat battery will not create such issues that you experience with
your SA.
As for schematics they are available at Artek but the PSU is not
included in that CLIP.

Fans here, turns out on closer inspection the 8673D uses 92mm in the upper section, not 120mm - oops - so regrouping on that front (the 8660 series appear to be 120mm fans.)

Been using 99% isopropyl (IPA, not from the local brew pub).
A 3.5mm Maury sliding load/termination had enough of that same foam residue that it would not slide across it's range. The supplies below (aerosol IPA and foam-tip swabs, along with a very fine tipped tweezers to pluck out anything that could be plucked) together all got the sliding load back to normal motion.
MG Chemicals 824-450G as an aerosol (not push-pump) packaging I've found is really handy for detail electronics cleaning (just IPA, but in a propellant spray can.)
Foam-tip swabs (like those used for cleaning fiber-optic connectors during field installation, cheap by the pack of 100) with either rounded (2.5mm) or pointy (1.25mm) tips are also helpful to reach in around the male pin and internal shielding. The female pin end I think only can be cleaned by IPA, that's where delivering via spray is handy.

I've actually got some Electrolube Contact Cleaning Strips which I bought for cleaning relay contacts. And with a bit of patience and some IPA they seem to be doing the job. They are possibly slightly abrasive, so I'm not going to go too mad with them.??

I have an E4402B spectrum analyser with an odd power fault.? The SA powers down after about 10 minutes, but works fine up until then.
(It has been working well in the past but has been unused for a year or two.
I want to try powering it from 12V DC to see if that makes any difference.
Does anyone know the polarity of the two-pin connector on the rear?
And I assume that no-one has rea;l schematics for this unit.? I can't find them anywhere.

Hello,
I have the same issue with my calibration kits, the foam got very sticky
and the majority of the connectors are affected. Some had a dust cap and
only the exterior was affected and it cleaned nicely with IPA.
I was also thinking to put them in the small ultrasonic cleaner that I
have but from what I saw the labels will probably wear off. Some text on
the labels is already not visible when I cleaned the outside with IPA 99%.

Hi Wilko,
You are right, CRT screens are sensitive to the environment; steel, magnetic
field of other devices if they are nearby, gravity...but I found the cause.
When I noticed the display problem, I was working on the RF sections and was
concentrating on them.
I think I wasn't paying enough attention.
What I thought was a tilt reversal was perhaps the orientation of the
spectrum, as I regularly changed the instrument's orientation for testing.
Why I say this is that I disassembled everything and placed the display on
the table.
The deflection coils were very stable and glued; they couldn't move.
So, I think I made an observation error regarding the tilt reversal.
I took the measurement with a ruler, and the display was straight.
The metal casing covering this section had been removed before this
measurement, and I demagnetized it, along with all the circuits, before
reassembling.
But when I disassembled it, I noticed that this section had already been
disassembled and unfortunately reassembled incorrectly, and the case
covering the CRT was misaligned, as was the outer frame for the display,
which wasn't properly seated.
I corrected everything, and now my screen is straight.
The positioning of the metal case and the outer frame caused the tilt.
The metal case containing the display was screwed tightly on the left side,
but barely on the right side.
Therefore, the right side was slightly raised above the aluminum frame,
causing the tilt.

I can see that... as N-connectors...say, precision ones... they might go to 25 or 26 GHz...but N connectors are usually to 18 GHz, where... AFAIK...TE11 can start happening.

The 85025A... with an N connector... is spec t to about 18 GHz... if I recall correctly.

For frequencies beyond 18 GHz, 3.5 mm, 2.92 mm (K), or SMA connectors are preferred...AFAIK.
I've never tried an 805025A past 20 GHz; but I'm surprised the N connector maintains TEM... and if it goes to TE11... then 'works to 40 GHz" doesn't make sense to me.
