You do not per chance have a steel workbench or similar? As I have found out the hard way ages ago (i.e. during my education) such an environment can affect tube trace alignment.
Rotating the monitor on the desk made the picture change. Had me puzzled for quite a while, even more so because in my case it was a colour CRT.
