Re: How to test a mixer on a hp 8559 plugin in a 853 main frame
It very well may still be present, but it would be down quite a bit from where it should be, maybe 20 db or more down. I have an 8558 that was about 10 db down and suspected the mixer. Turned out it

Re: Failing 3585A Spectrum Analyzer
I traced the source of the spikes to some failing halogen light dimmers. I have replaced them and the problem is all but gone.
Why the noise gets in to the 3585 is a mystery, but who cares.

HP 3570A
Well, the 3570A is not working. The A channel gives amplitude readings that are about 90 dB down from the actual input. The B channel is pretty close in amplitude but the phase is way off. So it

Re: HP 3468 DMM battery change
Yeah, I disconnected the battery overnight and shorted the RAM chip Vcc to gnd to clear any leftover capcitance, etc. That had no effect. I'm kind of thinking maybe something was on the verge of

Re: Hello, and 16500A memory sizes
The DRAM chips only need one more address line to be 4Mbit rather than 1Mbit (they're a matrix, not a linear array), and that address line (pin 5) is definitely wired up (to one of the PALs, if I

Chris, probably you're missing two addressing lines to upgrade it to 4mb. I think i have a newer board with

Re: Hello, and 16500A memory sizes
I've made a bit of progress on upgrading the memory in my 16500A. I looked at the parts I had available, and decided I had little to lose by trying to hack 4MB onto the CPU board myself. I've removed

You don't buy blades, period. They are EXPENSIVE when separated. My blades were gotten with the LAs I got (the

Re: Spectrum Analyzer
Correction to the following: I would characterize the E4406A as a vector *signal* analyzer, not vector *network* analyzer.

Speaking of VNA, I just received an Agilent E4406A this afternoon and have been checking it out. It is around 8 years old and was last calibrated in 2009.
I'm having fun with the IQ polar display,

Re: Spectrum Analyzer
You can control it via HP-IB, RS-232, telnet protocol to socket 5025 (I
think) and just type commands that way, or by writing to a particular file
while the device is mounted as an NFS file system, or

There's also compatibility issues with keyboards and mice, as well as
a limited system memory which keeps you from using certain modules.

Re: Spectrum Analyzer
I’ll vote for an 8568B with an 8447D in front of it. Use a probe with 2pf cap on the end. Do the math and you have a pseudo fet probe > -140 and 100hz to 1.5Ghz. Slip a copper strap around a tube

Yeah, I suppose quite a bit of the cost is in getting the modules _with the
probes_. Although some of the logic analyzer and pattern generator probes
are pretty trivial and can be fabricated
