Hello again Andi,
Good choice. Though if that's all you intend to do,
then a marker gen might be superfluous. It's of more
use when you need to set up a pass-band across a
fairly wide frequency range, such as aligning a TV IF
strip (who does that these days) or in certain
high-end radio receivers where a broader intermediate
stage passband is required. I have a Racal RA17
receiver with such a stage, and the marker gen made
quite a difference. Basically, the marker inserts
"blips" on the screen trace at frequencies you select.
The 8600 has 5 markers, all of which can be set using
the digital frequency read-out. so you can assess very
quickly how the passband's shape is coming up. So, I'd
recommend the 8601 for a start - see how you like it,
and then look our for a marker gen if yiu think you
need it. In Australia, good 8601's are still
commanding high prices - typically in the range AUD200
to 500 (USD150 to 350). Good luck.

Hello Rob,
thanks for the quick answer!
I want to use the 8601 for alignment of broadcast
type radios.
However, I must admit that I, in theory, know how to
to just
that but am still not relly clear about what a
marker generator
exaclty is and how it works. I know that it can be
set up, for
example, to see exactly where the center frequency
is located
in the filter response curve on the 'scope, but
there it ends.
Can you or anyone else advise or point me to some
resource on
the net where this is explained? (Did a quick google
search
but wasn't successful.)
(You see, I'm an eager-to-learn hobbyist - not a
professional.)
Many thanks!

Hi there,
I've had an HP8601A for about 5 years. It worked
perfectly when I got it, and it still does. It's a
very nice instrument, and very useful for all manner
of things, particularly filter alignment. It's also
nice to set it up to measure the frequency response
of
your 'scope (up to 110 MHz). to get best use of the
8601, you should try and get its matching marker
generator - the HP8600. Makes testing a pleasure.

Hi Group,
I'm about to get a HP8601A RF Generator / Sweeper
which I _think_ is basically working.
However, I would like to know if anyone has good
or
bad experience with this device.
(Is it prone to failure, does it perform well,
does
it need frequent re-calibration, ...)
Also I would like to ask if anyone has operator
and/or
service manual for this unit.
A quick response, if possible, would be very much
appreciated!
