Okay, guys, many thanks indeed for all the info and suggestions. Rather than giving 'intermediate updates' at each new discovery I've decided I'll refrain from posting again until I have definitively pinned down the issue to either the attenuator or the control circuitry associated with it. Thanks to you people I now have enough background detail to be able to do that. :)
