While not seen much these days, there may still be a place for a dip meter.
It allows quick checking of resonance, capacitance, inductance, and can
even be used as an ad-hoc signal generator.? This is old-school technology
but something that could be modernized to use digital tuning of a DDS or
synthesizer for increased accuracy and stability.
