Another reason for using the parallel board is the perceived difficulty by some, in soldering small smd IC's.? Yes for some its a challenge, no doubt.
My board for example,? is mostly smd parts as it is, but mainly discrete parts, do-able if one sets your mind to it.

The parallel modules (not the bare chips) seem to be more available, so Glenn & I decided to use those with the PCF8574 in between. That essentially makes it an I2C device. That approach actually uses one less GPIO pin as you don't even need the LE connection.
