Re: Need help getting MVS to run
You need to make sure your console port in your MVS.conf is the same as the statement I gave you.? If you are using out of the box TK3 or4 it would be 3270? I gave you 3271.? I change mine for security considerations.? (x3270 -model 3279-2-E -once localhost:3270&) regards; Rahim ? ??

Need help getting MVS to run
I have setup Hercules and MVS on my iMac. I have Hercules started and when I start MVS it says it is waiting for port 3270 to become free. Well, Hercules is listening on that port. Is this the correct way or do I need to change one of them to listen on a different port? This is my first time trying to run emulation software and the documentation for both does not mention this at all.
Thanks for any help.... |

You can use the HISTORY parameter in LISTCAT command? ( IDCAMS program).... also...
LISTC? ?ent("dataset-name-gdg" )? ?HISTORY?
and then.... find? a unique string "NONVSAM"? in a list .....
Example.
listc ent(RAC0.A001D.PRINT.SMF) history
GDG BASE ------ RAC0.A001D.PRINT.SMF ? ?
NONVSAM ---- RAC0.A001D.PRINT.SMF.G0001V00 ? ?<== first generation? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I need to list out the names of all existing generations of a GDG in order to construct a job to process them all individually. This would be an automated process, not constructing the jobstream by hand. I can use IDCAMS to do it, but I get a lot of extra cruft in there. I can also adapt the logic in GDGCOPY to do this, which would require dusting off some weak assembler skills. Is there a way to do this on MVS 3.8 that I have missed? |
Re: RES: [H390-MVS] is there a standard/best way to manage personal source code?
Ed Liss
On the mainframe, I use IEBUPDTX, which is a modification of IBM's IEBUPDTE.? It is a "poor man's" Version Control System.? IEBUPDTX is simple and effective in version tracking. It is pre-installed on Tk3 and I believe on TK4- as well.? Downside is no security for "production" code.
I recently discovered (thanks to an RPF upgrade) ARCHIVER.? It is another "poor man's" VCS that compresses and stores files in VSAM clusters.? Files stored are not limited to source code.? RPF 1.8.3 supports an interface to ARCHIVER. Since I now use SPFlite on the PC almost exclusively,? I am experimenting with using GIT.? I am experimenting with a semi-automatic "sync" between a pc directory and a PDS. |

From my experience I would say that a complete power loss is rarely a source of such an error. A "Page File Error", I guess, may come or from an error of the hercules emulator, flushing its buffer to emulated dasd files or from an error of the guest OS, same problem. From the picture I have in mind, assuming the hercules emulator can't find any error on emulated dasd files, it should happen the emulator had a "write()" call which returned correctly from the OS, a write to page dasd volumes, which never actually wrote anything on the physical disks, which buffers had been lost somewhere in the path betweek HD cache and HD physical plates. This may actually happen, in my experience, in some weird configuration of OS, filesystems and physical disks. It shouldn't neither come from the hercules emulator itself, neither from the guest MVS system. Peppe. |
Re: MVS38J Page File Error
I am not running the 38J system, but I have had the same problems. I did a hercules STOPALL then hibernated my windows then the next day restarted and did a STARTALL and expected it to come back. Basically most of the time it worked fine. MVS got confused for a bit and then would be OK. However after a week, I got some strange things happening. I spent a week rebuilding my dasd from backups because not only were there page file errors, but spool errors and damaged PDS directories. Now I have good backups, and always shutdown cleanly. Never leaving my hercules and "closing the lid". I wasn't aware of the QUIESCE command though - thanks for that.
I started leaving the hercules running because the shutdown/IPL was taking time and I was impatient. Lesson learnt! |
Re: MVS38J Page File Error
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWell, if you are running TK4-, there are timed jobs that run (like MF1) if you have not disabled them, and any job that runs could conceivably invoke paging, plus MVS was never as ¡°quiet¡± when ¡°nothing is going on¡± from an application standpoint as either version of DOS, so *any* activity requiring disk I/O when your laptop ¡°goes to sleep¡± or ¡°hibernates¡± (the usual setting for a laptop ¡°close the lid¡± action, though neither is required) then I can see ¡°strange¡± disk I/O errors to perhaps result. ? If your power settings say ¡°do nothing¡± when the lid is closed, I would think no issue with Hercules or MVS would happen. ? HTH ? Peter ? Re: MVS38J Page File Error
Well, another option is to add a paging volume, define a page data set, add it.

Then for the datasets in use, drain the dataset, delete, define, and add. Then drain the new dataset and leave in place for the next time, or for a high use occurrence. On Fri, Sep 11, 2020 at 11:47 AM John James <johnjamesmain@...> wrote:

Re: MVS38J Page File Error
If an IPL does not fix the issue, just copy the particular DASD Page Hercules file in question from the distribution. ? While not a scientific solution, it is low risk. I have used this solution in one or two cases over the last several years.? I suggest backing up all the Hercules DASD files periodically ¡ª disk space is cheap these days. Re: RPF 184 released
Hi Don,
Thanks for your suggestion. I've made a little change in RPF 3.4. and now you see TEST.ARCHIVE. But you cannot browse a VSAM file in 3.4. I know that RFE can browse VSAM clusters. This will be a future enhancement of RPF. I consider to invoke IDCAMS to process a PRINT statement. But why do you need to browse an archive in 3.4? You have option 3.9. RPF 184 is now also available on cbttape.org, Look in de Updates section. After obtaining FILE415.XMI and uploading to your MVS system, run job $XMIT370 to RECEIVE the LOADXMIM member to create the RPF load library. After copying the load modules to SYS2.CMDLIB, your new version is installed. Thanks again for your suggestion for browsing VSAM clusters. Cheers, Rob |
