TSO prompts for the password, and I type it in.??? If it is a batch job then the console prompts me with a message requiring a response, and it accepts that no problem – IE the R xx type response.?? That works
fine.??

IN TSO if you do an alloc, or same in RPF – the prompt for the password is on the TN3270 user session – however the response to the user in TSO is simply a *** and the command fails, no specific error reported
– but the console reports the IEC331I 056-102 error for the user session.

This is a pure Jay Mosley instruction generated system, using only material from Jay.?? And there is an example (right at the top) on one of his excellent web pages of a TSO session with the password prompt
and correct response – so I know it can work.?

I did that about 10 years ago. I had a full volume all prepared and had to copy it to a client's machine. All I had was a laptop with IND$FILE, so if I remember correctly I did DFDSS/XMIT/IND$FILE/RECEIVE/DFDSS. It took a while even though there wasn't a huge amount of data.
By coincidence, I just found out today DFDSS full volume dumps (at least by default) have no compression and not even any de-duplication. I don't remember using ZIP or TERSE in my copy process above, but I may have.

If you have XMIT files can't you use DASDLOAD to pop them on a volume and then mount that to MVS?

As you have no support for Crypto Express devices you will have to use a clear key CKDS. I don’t think there is support for a PKDS without a Crypto
Express, but I am unsure.
Instructions for initialising a clear-key CKDS.

It IS possible to run ICSF in z/OS however! :) Unfortunately however, I don't believe it will work using the current 4.7 version of hercules. But I believe it WILL work in the upcoming 4.8 version of Hercules! (still in development). If you can build Hercules for yourself (by using Bill's highly recommended, most excellent "Hercules Helper" script), you could give the 4.8 development version of Hercules a try. (CAVEAT: I know VERY little about (and have VERY little experience with) z/OS! All I know about ICSF is that is has something to do with cryptography on z/OS, and I believe there have been several commits made to Hercules 4.8 related to that. So it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.) p.s. AFAIK no changes to your Hercules configuration file should be necessary to run ICSF in z/OS. Except maybe enabling whatever Facility (or Facilities) might be required for it. But they should be enabled automatically by Hercules.
