"Permanent Error?"

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Folks,

Can anyone explain why ONE member of a group of 400-plus members can't send a reply to any post I make?

From: mailer-daemon@...
To: (group member)
This is an automatically generated delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipient/s failed permanently:? (my email @groups.io)?
Reason: Permanent Error"

No issues with her replying to other group members, no issues with emailing me directly (not going through groups.io), and apparently it's been happening since she joined the group.? Her email provider is Comcast, and the "Permanent Error" sent to her is coming from Comcast, but I have no way to know if the issue is with the address in groups.io being undeliverable? for some reason, or if her reply is failing some internal Comcast thing because of the address she's trying to send to.? Other members with Comcast not reporting any issues (though most of those are not really active anyway... maybe this is why?)

I don't do business with Comcast, so getting any kind of support from them is unlikely, and everything I've checked in my account settings seems fine.? Nobody else is having problems replying to my posts, Comcast or otherwise.

Just not sure what direction to head in with this!? Thanks for any suggestions!

Karl

That's a function of your email program.? When replying to a member that has requested to join your group, it will be added by the site when you reply to them though.

I wouldn't call it a "default," as there's no way to change it.

I've seen no definitive statement from groups.io management as to why this is so, but I suspect it stems from the fact that embedded/inline photos are always displayed. In the course of browsing messages, I wouldn't want scroll bars popping up and menu items getting pushed off the page. Even if resized "on the fly" to fit in the screen's container, it still has to be downloaded in its entirety, and a 2048x2048 image (like Richard wants to allow) could take a long time to display (depending on file format). The bandwidth required to do this might also be a problem for those on a slow/metered connection.?
?
Taken together, allowing big inline images does seem like it could be the source of an unpleasant user experience.?

are you saying ¡°long¡± as in landscape so that it fits better in a message or even if ¡°long¡± is the portrait direction?
It will be scaled down to fit within a 640x640 box. Landscape or portrait does not matter.

Bruce

How do I get rid of 'Your request to join the Deep Spring Center Prayer Group'.
This is being automatically included in the email subject line.
The subject should be Testing subject line.
?
I can't find how to delete it.
Thank you, Tana Dean

If your members are owners of other groups, you will not be able to change their email address.? Also, have you checked your activity log to see if there are any messages relating to the change you are trying to make?

Changing a list member's e-mail address

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯m the owner of a pro groups.io account, and need to update the e-mail addresses of several of my people.? I go into the main group, go to admin and members, search for the member with the edit box, hit enter on their name, and find the e-mail address and delete it, then enter the new address and go down to the save button and hit enter on that.? But when I go back in to check if their e-mail address has been updated, it¡¯s still the old one.? I¡¯m doing something wrong here.? Any help gratefully accepted.

Embedded images are always resized to 640 px in the long dimension. If you don't want that to happen, you have to attach them.

Photos in Email are Resized... Despite Setting??

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Fellow Groupers -

I have a mystery. Photos in emails to our group are being resized to 640 pixels, despite our setting to ¡°Resize to 2048 pixels.¡± ?(I¡¯m only interested in email deliveries, most all our subscribers use the group through email, not the web)

Here¡¯s that panel in my settings (screenshot):

Our text: Sending photos of 2000 pixels and 1340 pixels get resized to 640.?

Any ideas?

I assume you're making those changes in the subgroup's Settings page***, so to make this a bit less tedious, use a URL trick.? The URL will be in this format, https://maingroupname.groups.io/g/subgroupname/settings, so after making whatever changes in the settings for the first subgroup and clicking on Update, don't navigate anywhere but instead substitute the current subgroup in the URL with the name of the next subgroup and press Enter.? That will save you the time and mouse clicks to navigate to the next subgroup's settings page since it will take you there directly.

*** but the same URL trick can be used in other pages as well, like .../hashtags for example.

You could go even further if you find yourself doing this often until group things/settings/etc get finalized more-or-less, you may want to create temporary bookmarks for now to save you changing the subgroupname in the URL.

You could also create a #suggestion in the group, that's where we interact with the site developers.

Cheers,
Christos

Is there a way to set GLOBAL settings or CHANGE the settings for multiple sub-roups at the same time?

Peter Nesbitt

I have our main group up and running and have created a number of sub-groups for teams and unique situations. It seems that the more I learn about Groups.io and understand the features, I want to go back and change settings for some of my groups, but not all.
?
The issue is that now I must manually go to each sub-group and make all of those unique changes for each individual sub-group.

I've seen this elsewhere in the past as GLOBAL settings, or an option to SET SETTINGS and then APPLY TO ALL or APPLY TO SELECTED.
?
Any help wold be appreciated ¨C this is a feature-rich environment.

Peculiar, but not too surprising. To the best of my knowledge - as Malcolm inferred - there is no internet standard for "conversations." In GMail, all you can do is turn them on and off, and Yahoo Mail seems to be the same ().
?
Such functions operate best within a corporate intranet environment, where everyone has to use the same mail client. Since "topics" within groups .io are behaving as expected, it remains your best fallback option.?

Good luck,

I don't know of a way you can do that (easily).? It would be much simpler to just start a group with a similar name that folks, like you, could find.

To the best of my knowledge, the Zoom integration was removed about a year ago.? If/when this site is upgraded to Bootstrap 5, the integration should be re-enabled.

Re: Threads splitting in email box

The person who seems to be inadvertently creating the splits most often -- and swears he isn't changing anything in the reply?or subject line areas -- is using yahoo from their online platform.

The other two folks, including me, are using gmail.

It also appears that if one tries to reply to an email within the thread it splits into another conversation for all of us.?

Groups.io threads incoming emails (i.e.: inserts them into existing topics) using the algorithm found at /helpcenter/manual/generalinfo/general/topic_threading_algorithm.htm ?
?
Replies posted online are unequivocally threaded based on what message was displayed when the Reply button was clicked.?
?
But for the several people on the thread, it has now split in our email and is acting like 3 different threads.?

Anyone know what might be causing this and how to avoid / fix it?
Some email clients group messages into "conversations," and I assume that's what you're talking about? Very likely, they use some other algorithm. For Outlook, I found . I suspect other clients may do it differently. It would be helpful to know what email client these people may be using.

a redundant site

Hi all? sorry i do not post often on this Group as i am a member of a lot of IO groups?
?
but i have recently joined a group that has 12 members but has only ever had 2 postings that is one when the group was set up about 5 years ago
?and the one i sent when i joined about 2 weeks ago someone must have approved my membership? but unfortunately when emailing the owner?
I get no replies? is there a way i can take over the sight? as it appears to be a redundant? site
?
