What notices other than the boiler plate member welcome should I update?

All of them should be checked (and updated and saved) if they contain mentions or email addresses of the old name or address.

From the members' end, they need to update any contacts or bookmarks they have created which point to the old group, otherwise they'll get back errors if they tried to email the old address.

To combat this it requires a bit of work, but after*** you rename your group to the new name, create a new free basic "placeholder" group with the old name, and you only need to set it to Public message archives, Restricted Membership, All messages are moderated, and Allow Nonmembers to Post. Also set the group homepage description to an appropriate text to let whoever visits the old group homepage know of the name change and new address etc and to change their contacts or bookmarks, basically the same stuff you told them before the change. You can also post a single message in this group with the same stuff as in the homepage, for people who go directly to the Messages section instead of the homepage, so this way they won't miss it.

This will catch folks visiting the old homepage and/or usually post messages online.? To catch the folks sending in messages to the old address using email, create a Rejected Message notice and set it active, then if someone emails the old group, their message will end up in the pending message bucket, and you can then reject the message and include any text you want, plus the Rejected Message notice.?

Note that since you allow non-members to post for this placeholder group, you may end up getting a few stray spam or whatnot messages, just delete and ignore those.

Then after some time has passed and you're not getting any member stray messages anymore, you can delete this placeholder group. If in the far future someone tries to search Groups.io for the old group, another trick you can do is, in the good group, include somewhere in the group description some explanation text that has the old name and old email address so if you delete the placeholder group, if someone searches for the old group name or address it will find the new group name.

*** It may take from a few minutes to a couple of hours after you rename the group before the old name becomes available again, so give it a bit of time before you try to create the placeholder group.

Christos
