rash of emails/postings to my members from 'member' @Yahoo Groups

Has anyone else been experiencing this?
The names on these postings are from my group, but we haven't used YG for a long time.

thanks

Are these perhaps postings to your Yahoo Group? You should be able to tell by the Yahoo Group footer on the bottom.

If so, it is possible that your Yahoo group has become unmoderated as a result of changes by Yahoo.

Some of the members of my Groups.io group reported getting an email that looked like this:

From:?Accounts Cheryl?(redacted)?[THECAMP]?<THECAMP@...>
Date: Thu, Feb 20, 2020, 8:11 AM
Subject: THECAMP Payment copy - ref #00965342
To:

Greetings,

See the below payment sent to you based on the outstanding statement on our account.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you need any assistance.

I have redacted the email address and deleted the link that was part of the "Open Payment Voucher" line so that it was safe to post here.? This same message was sent out to many of the members in my group and was posted to another group that I belong to.? THE CAMP is an old Yahoo Group that we used to belong to before we moved it to Groups.io.? The owner of the old group died without giving ownership to someone else so we were orphaned and re-grouped on Groups.io a few years ago.? We contacted the person whose name was on the post and she changed the password to her email account and assured us that she didn't make any payments to Yahoo groups so this email was definitely a hoax.

Is this they type of email you were thinking of when asking about the rush of emails Anita?? If so, were yours from a different person?? If that is so, I am suspecting that someone has hacked into Yahoo Groups and harvested addresses.? I would love to hear any insight that anyone has about this and how to protect ourselves (if this is possible).

We've received similar emails. The "from" email addresses are faked which, unfortunately, is very easy to do.

I suggest informing your people that they must mark or report them as spam through their ISP or email provider and each one has their own methods of doing so

If the posts are coming through groups.io, I don't recommend this, unless you want people to be auto-unsubscribed. Better to put the poster's address on moderation so you can head off those posts until they figure out and remedy the spoofing.

If Yahoo groups, you should probably get everyone migrated and shut down the group.

Yvette,

Hmm...

This could be a consequence of Yahoo's recent changes. They switched (apparently) all groups from moderated to unmoderated.

So groups that formerly were dormant because there was no one to approve messages might now "come alive" again. Alas, with no one at the helm to disable the posting addresses now used by spammers they may become spam-fests. And since it remains possible to spoof a member's address on the inbound side, any member's address may be abused this way.

Sigh. I really don't understand why they think email lists don't need moderation. But that's more a discussion for the other GMF.

Shal, if this is the case, would it be possible for one of the previous members of the Yahoo group to shut it down?? I am in contact with some members who had moderation privileges there and if I could explain to them how to do it, maybe we could stop problems with the Yahoo group in the future.

A member couldn't, but a moderator with typical privileges could act to stop the abuse(d)(ing) address from posting. They would search for that address in the Manage Members list and change its posting privilege to the can't post override.

To stop all (but moderator) posting in the group no longer seems to be possible: the Access Control tab of the control panel used to have the Who can post? control, but that whole tab is gone now.

To actually delete the Yahoo group would require that the moderator have the Delete this group privilege, which many owners may have been reluctant to give. To find out, the moderator can go to the Control Panel, and look at the bottom of the About Group tab - there will be a section there with a purple Delete Group button there if the moderator has the privilege.

Or if the moderator has the privilege to Add, remove, and change moderator privileges he/she could give him/herself the delete privilege (I think). That's another powerful privilege that many owners might not give out. To find out the moderator can click on his/her own row in the Moderators list and see if the Edit Member dialog pops up. If nothing at all happens then he/she lacks the privilege.

Thanks Shal.? I have copied the pertinent information and passed it on to one of the moderators of our old Yahoo group.? Hopefully, they will be able to shut the group down.

If no one has the authority to delete the yahoo group such as when an owner is not available but a moderator is, they can unsubscribe the member who the spam is coming from.
