The owner of the old group died without giving ownership to someone
else so we were orphaned and re-grouped on Groups.io a few years ago.

This could be a consequence of Yahoo's recent changes. They switched (apparently) all groups from moderated to unmoderated.
So groups that formerly were dormant because there was no one to approve messages might now "come alive" again. Alas, with no one at the helm to disable the posting addresses now used by spammers they may become spam-fests. And since it remains possible to spoof a member's address on the inbound side, any member's address may be abused this way.
Sigh. I really don't understand why they think email lists don't need moderation. But that's more a discussion for the other GMF.
