Question About Transferring a Large Yahoo Groups List
#transfer
Well, I think it's probably about time for me to seriously consider transferring my large Yahoo Groups over to Groups.IO. My one group has not had any Photos functionality now for about 6 weeks.? Fearful I will continue to lose features and functionality so that the Easy Groups Transfer process will not work.
I have a few questions, and please forgive me if any are redundant - feel free to refer me to an appropriate message number if needed.? So, I have 4 groups on Yahoo Groups.? All have been in existence for several years, one or two as long as 2004.? They all have between 3,000 and 6,000 list members, but of course, only a fraction of those members are now active (dwindling due to all the issues).? We are image-heavy due to the groups all being focused on sewing, machine embroidery and quilting.? So, my thoughts were to create a couple of archive groups that would only house older photos - no posting - in order to keep our active list under 1 GB (my list members would most likely not be inclined to pay to join, in order to cover the cost of the Premium level group.? So, the question would be:? How would I transfer over some of the photos to one or two photo archive groups during the transfer process?? Am I able to select certain things to transfer over during the Easy Group Transfer process?? I believe I did see that the moderator/list owner can indicate a size limit with photos, when list members upload, so as not to have huge photos uploaded.? And that Groups.IO will automatically re-size photos to that size (scaling of course, so w x h remains in proportion)?? And, when I do make the Easy Transfer, do I have to send out the email invites right away?? I would like to see how the list looks prior to doing that, so when list members start signing up, the new list on Groups.IO is organized and tidy.? Last question:? I do not see that Groups.IO has a Links section, like Yahoo Groups does?? Am I missing this, or is this possibly in the works, or simply "not gonna happen"?? We do use the Links section pretty frequently, so it would be awfully nice to have that additional feature available.? Not a deal-breaker, though.? -- Patty S. |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi You said: ¡°(my list members would most likely not be inclined to pay to join, in order to cover the cost of the Premium level group.¡± I guess you realize that the premium cost is per group, not per group member.? Your group can get 10 GB for $110 a year. Or $10 monthly.? If I misunderstood you, please ignore! Frances |
Patty,
So, the question would be: How would I transfer over some of theHeh. Well here you may need some tact. Or a Jedi mind trick. The transfer agent is also the owner of the product. So asking him to break your Y!Group archive into multiple Free Groups.io groups so as to avoid paying him for Premium... Well, I don't know. Don't ask, don't get, I suppose. Am I able to select certain things to transfer over during theYou can by whole sections (Files, Photos, etc.) but I don't know if mark can subdivide a section. Probably he can, but... above. I believe I did see that the moderator/list owner can indicate a sizeAlso applies to photos copied by the transfer agent. So that may be another solution, as it could substantially reduce the storage per photo. But it might not be acceptable if members need to zoom in on the photos to see the finer details of the needlework. (scaling of course, so w x h remains in proportion)?Yes, of course. And, when I do make the Easy Transfer, do I have to send out the emailYou don't need to send any invites. When the transfer completes the members copied in will automatically receive a notice from Groups.io giving them the address (email and web) of the group and an opt-out link. If (before starting the transfer) you've customized the group's default Welcome notice the copied in members will receive that also. See the help page for more info about member notices: /static/help#membernotices I would like to see how the list looks prior to doing that, so whenYou might be able to ask Mark to defer those notices. That was asked once before but I don't recall what the answer was, if any. Doing things the other way around, transferring all the content before the Members list, has other problems. I think then the content can't be connected to its proper owner (since they're not in the new group yet) and it all ends up as if uploaded by you. But again, that may be a question that needs to be asked of Mark, [email protected] - he may have a solution for that now. I do not see that Groups.IO has a Links section, like Yahoo GroupsYour Y!Groups Links section is converted into a table in the Database section. Groups.io's databases are more flexible, and have no capacity limits so that isn't as horrid a solution as it might seem. (Photos in the database are counted against your group storage quota, but your Yahoo Group links section and database section won't have any.) Shal |
Thanks for your detailed answers, Shal.? Just as a point of interest, I asked about setting up archive groups that are just to house old photos because I found a group just like that in Groups.IO.? We had actually done that exact same thing many years ago with Yahoo Groups, when they used to put a really small limit on the Photos section size, which is what made me think about doing this.? The reason I ask is the Photos section of one of my larger lists is 7.53 GB (eight years worth of photos).? I think the best thing to do is to contact Mark and ask him about this possibility.? Not that I'm trying to avoid paying, just that I don't see how I could charge for membership to cover the $110 annual fee (Frances, yes, I do realize it's annual, not monthly, but someone has to pay that, and I'm not inclined to do that).? I don't think Mark has anything set up so folks are billed a fee when joining, then annually.? So, I would have to figure out a way to cover that cost.? I understand there are others who don't mind paying that annual fee, but I guess I feel I already "donate" to the list with my time, and to also then have to pay for the privilege of others to join for free seems more than the generosity I have to give :-)? Since I don't have a business that benefits from my groups, just not willing to pay with both my time and dollars so others can continue to enjoy a free support group.? So, trying to figure out a way to manage all of our old photos so I can keep our group small enough to fit in the free category.? I might also be able to upload all the old photos to a photo sharing site like Flicker I guess.? Have to think about how to manage this issue, as it affects 2 of my 4 groups, whose Photos sections alone, are over 1 GB.?

It is very valuable to set the groups.io group up and play with it with just 2 or 3 people to get used to it and learn how it works. Then have the transfer done. Patty, how often do? your members actually access the oldest pictures? Also, we are a group of miniaturists, and our photos are showing well at 312 x 312. Yes, they are properly proportioned. We asked for that to be done from the beginning. Barb, that is a very good question.? I don't know, but I suspect folks do peruse through them, because we're a crafting group, so photos are kind of key in getting inspiration for your own sewing, quilting, machine embroidery projects.? So, thinking that maybe we could create a Flicker account for the old photos.? Just have to see if that is also free, based on the huge number of photos we have.? That might be a rather daunting task, though - moving ALL those photos to a Flicker page.? Have to look into that this weekend when I have some time.?

Patty,
So, thinking that maybe we could create a Flicker account for the oldYes, 1 TB of free storage, 10x the Yahoo Group limit. That might be a rather daunting task, though - moving ALL those photosAlso yes! However, if you get them organized into folders on your computer (via PG Offline, for example) Flickr does have bulk uploaders that can take a folder of photos at a time. You can also bulk upload them by way of Adobe Lightroom, but then you might be tempted to take on the even more daunting task of examining and perhaps adjusting them. Shal |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWhat about Pinterest?? That seems very photobased and it's free (I think).? If you're concerned about privacy, they have something called "secret boards" which sounds like you can control who sees it.? Just an idea. Barb ?

One group I am having transferred has about 3 GB of photos and files, so I opted for the $10/month (actually, $110/year) cost.? Asked for donations and got $5, $10 and $20 donations (via PayPal) to cover the cost, and that's a group of about 50 people.? It is a friendly group, we pretty much know each other.
So with a large group like you have, you might ask for a little cash to cover the cost and I bet you'd be surprised how generous people can be.? Plus it's a LOT more fair to the IO guys and will help keep them in business. Mike Conder |

It is a friendly group, we pretty much know each other.I faced the same issue some 3 years ago when Wikispaces restricted its free, basic service to just educational sites. Initially $50 p.a. and then boosted to $100 p.a. and soon to shut down (hence my search for a new platform to which I can transfer content and restore some semblance what we have). I solicited donations through PayPal and very quickly received enough for a couple of years. But it means going back to the members periodically and now PayPal has to report its distributions to the tax man. These donations in and expensed out to the service provider are counted as taxable income (in my country, anyway).?? |
