How to recover a lost or abandoned Yahoo Group and transfer it to Groups.io
Is there any way to recover and re-initiate an abandoned Yahoo Group?
As I understand it, Yahoo groups can be set to Unmoderated, Moderated, or Moderated For New Users until they establish their trustworthyness. The Group Eudora.win is a public group with 253 members founded July 3, 2001. It contains a wealth of historical information about the vintage Eudora email client that many still use. Unfortunately the Moderator has disappeared and for a year or more now very few are able to post - only those who for whatever reason were not on moderation. Is there any way for Yahoo to review the status of the Group, see it's value to the Eudora community, and attempt to in some way light it up again. Perhaps Yahoo could attempt to contact the Moderator and if he/she appears to be deceased then pass the task on to another person? I don't see how the current Moderator would possibly object to a process like that. The body of knowledge held by the 253 members is too valuable to loose access to. Alternatively, is there any way for a user (not the moderator) to copy everything over to a new groups.io account? Sincerely, -Harry |
Harry,
Is there any way to recover and re-initiate an abandoned Yahoo Group? At this time I don't think so. Unless you can find an active moderator of the Y!Group with at least the privilege to "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges" it would require the help of Yahoo Customer Care to give someone that privilege. And Customer Care no longer supports Yahoo Groups. On the other hand see this message in Y!GMF, contact Simon off-list, and cross your fingers: Alternatively, is there any way for a user (not the moderator) to copyNo. At least not directly. The transfer agent requires moderator access to the Y!Group in order to copy the content. Absent an owner or privileged moderator in that group to promote the transfer agent, that approach is closed off. As a member I think you can get a limited download of the group content using PG Offline. I'm not sure what the limitations are without moderator status, and I'm not sure if [email protected] could, or would, import the downloaded archive. You might also try the Chrome app to download the messages, but again I've not tried it without moderator privileges: The Group Eudora.win is a public group with 253 members founded JulyInteresting. I was a Eudora user up until about a year ago. I find two others in the directory, but one of them hasn't had activity since 2000. Shal |
Years ago I was able to get myself made the owner of a list the owner had abandoned. I don¡¯t know if Yahoo even has such an email for support now. I just explained the owner had moved and no one else was a moderator.

Yes, that is also my conclusion. It's? a shame...? Yahoo exists on the ads they run, so page views count, and by not helping to recover the Group they are abandoning lots of page views. Well, Yahoo is not known for clear thinking and good decisions and good customer support.? -Harry -----Original Message----- |

"I'm not sure what the limitations are without moderator status" PGO can get everything as a non-mod, non-owner except for the un-munged email addresses of members. Users can choose not to share their real email addresses and even as an owner, you won¡¯t get them. Early YG users (those grandfathered in from GeoCities (?))? didn't join with an email address and all you'll see is a big random number. ? Cheers, ? |
Wilson,
? Yes, and agree.? I've experienced this with our renegade group that was abandoned a decade ago by the owner and later by the last standing moderator. ? PGO is the only way we have found to accomplish the most data gathering from YG.? We've tried the Github Phython scripts to no avail.? The 4 know ones no longer work. We tried the Chrome ext too, it was a no-go as well. ? Other than the GroupsIO transfer, PGO was the only other way to go. Looking forward to the message uploader with PGO of the Yahoo data to GroupsIO in the near future. :) ? BMaverick ? |

I remember how I accidentally downloaded content from public groups that I was not a member of (typos...!).? The IgnoredAmbience scripts download content as JSON files, and some time in future there will be scripts with which to convert that into other formats, which you can make available in the Files section. I wonder what is the database size limit (for storing old e-mails in the database). Samuel |
