Links in digest

Recently, a subscriber had a problem. One of the messages in the digest was about an article the poster recommended, but the link to the article was missing.

I asked the member to send me the digest, which she did. Going from there, I discovered that the poster had forwarded the message to the group, and the link (and most of the info) was in that forwarded message. This (the forwarded message) was removed from the digest, explaining the member's problem.

So ... why is this happening? Any solutions for the future?

Thanks,
Su

It could also be that the message was deleted before the digest was compiled. If so, those on Individual Emails would have received it but the Digest people might not.

If the message was present but the link missing, it could be that it was in the middle of an iframe or a web form or some other prohibited html construct. Generally speaking anyone who gets into the habit of forwarding html emails can expect some things to disappear.

If something else is going on, we'll need more details; including some information on whether the poster and receiver were the same person.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thanks, Bruce. Here's my answers to your questions.

Was the message completely missing from the digest? If so, I suspect the receiver had previously muted that topic, perhaps inadvertently. Have her check the entries at?/topics?m=1
No. She received the top part (the new part) but not the forwarded part of that email.

No, it's still on there.

Hmm, I checking .... I dodn't see anything fancy in there. Definitely no iFrames or anything like that. It actually looks like plain text plus a link, to me. With of course the obligatory MS characters that display weirdly on Firefox and Thunderbird.

If something else is going on, we'll need more details; including some information on whether the poster and receiver were the same person.
No, poster (P) and receiver (R) are different individuals. More info:
When I view the original post on the web interface, I see something like this:

I thought I sent this last Friday, but I sent it to myself. Maybe I took too many pain pills? But I believe this is a very important topic for us.

Begin forwarded message:
[Show quoted text]

The digest shows the same thing, minus the [Show quoted text] button.

So does the digest just trim off the entire forwarded part?

Digest trims off anything it believes to be quoted material, including forwarded messages.

That would explain it, thanks. Most of the time, that is a very good thing.

The only solution I can think of then is to tell members about it. Any other ideas?

If they get in the habit of copy/paste instead of forward, it would solve the problem.? A learning curve, but not that steep.

The Groups.io help and linked to the wiki says:

Email Delivery
?
The Email Delivery options control how you wish to receive group emails.
?
Individual Messages will send each email individually, as soon as it's posted.
?
Full Featured Digest will group the days messages into batches of 12 and send each batch when the twelvth is posted. Any that remain at the end of the day will be sent as the final (or only) digest of the day. The digests include the full text of each message, omitting any quotes of prior messages. Full Featured Digests include at the top a list of the enclosed topics, clickable as links to take you to that topic.
?
Plain Digest works the same way, but is sent as a text/plain email message, with no clickable links.
?
Daily Summary sends a once-daily list of topics posted that day. Unlike the digests the summary does not include the text of any of the messages, only the list of topics.
?
Special Notices Only sends only those messages which a moderator has designated as a Special Notice.
?
No Email (not available in all groups) sends no posted messages to you by email. You may still receive individual notifications from the group and/or from Groups.io.

Thanks, Duane.

Frances, I know about that. I'm not sure how it relates to my question, though.

Whether forwarded content gets wrapped in a blockquote or not may be an option in some email interfaces.

Thunderbird does not do that. It has two choices for forwarded content: " inline" and "as attachment". When Inline is selected it puts a header block in front of the forwarded message, as below.

That was my first reaction as well, but realized it was buried in the details, "The digests include the full text of each message, omitting any quotes of prior messages."? I wrote it off as an overzealous helper! (TMI ;>)

Ah, that makes more sense.

Boldfacing or underlining that text would have helped it to stand out. As it was I skimmed over it too fast. My apologies.
