Members joining anew group, a reason?
Hello My group has just been moved from Yahoo where when new members joined the group they needed to give a reason why they wanted to join As a moderator I need to see this reason in order to approve them to the group However I don't see this option here in the setup. Does it exist in settings somewhere? Thanks |
Re: Require info from prospective members
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAs for my group we ask questions as well before admitting anyone to the group.? We are a Chronic Pain group.? We ask for a chronic pain related reason for joining the group as well as an affirmation such person will abide by the groups rules.? As well, one of the Co-Owners or Moderators checks internet and or social media postings by the prospective member before they are admitted.
However, since we have to abide by FDA rules as well as DEA as in regards to postings about illegal drugs one may use for pain, we view this as being mandatory for us to do.

As you can see from the myriad of responses there are many reasons why such a feature is useful. My lists are for some pretty narrow special interests and it is a great tool to make sure the prospective member is actually interested in the topic and will comply with the rules set forth (stay on topic, not inflame discussions etc)
Hopefully this feature gets implemented soon! |

Were I to migrate a list today, I would: * Migrate the list subscribers; * Back up list archives, and transfer them to an appropriate historical society, library, or museum; thereby making the new site look, and feel brand-new. jonathon |

I think I've finally figured out where the one BOLD word is coming from.? When you search for a word in the directory, that word will be in bold on the results page.? Now we just need to find out why your description is being truncated at about 170 characters...

Change of Mail Delivery status
Al Silverstein
Let's assume that a Yahoo Group is being prepared to be transferred.
Let's assume that the Yahoo Group has been in existence for over 15 years. Let's assume that the Yahoo Group to be transferred there are a large number of members with "No Email' Delivery. Let's assume that at the new group at groups.io? that "No Email" delivery is no longer an option. What happens to the membership delivery status during the transfer?? Al |

First question: how did you know that 2-300 people opted-out of the transfer? Did you receive a notice? Second question. I have chosen to move my group message archive, too. So I suppose that at some point all YG group messages will show on my new Groups.io group. My question is: if a member opts-out of the transfer for privacy/copyright/whatever reason, is there a way to delete from Groups.io his/her old YG messages? Keeping his/her messages in the new group, where they can be viewed by other members, is considered a copyright violation, from what I can understand. Marina |

Members wishing to join the group used the Yahoo box to introduce themselves and explain in a few words why they were interested in the group. Pending members with no description were contacted by the moderator in charge and kindly asked to come out of the dark. It worked well. Marina |

My other group description, on the other hand, was meant to be a bit longer (not excessively), but Groups Directory shows just a line and a half of text. From that cut off description it isn't even clear what the group is about. I turned both descriptions into plain text days ago, so there was no further testing going on, what you saw is the actual text. Can you have a look at my second group, please? Search for Biblit in Groups Directory /g/Biblit If you're still seeing one of those words in bold, maybe there's a plug-in orI tried visiting Groups Directory with Microsoft Edge and then with my smartphone (searching with Google and Chrome). Even with my husband's Mac I still see that word in bold (plus the strangely shortened text). Maybe something irreparable happened between me and Groups.io when I created the two texts. I don't really know how to sort this out. Food for wizard's thought. Marina |
Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
Thank you, Shal. I'll wait it out, then.
By the way, I've found out that you cannot invite people to a subgroups. You can either add them (which is a Premium Group feature, if I am not mistaken) or they must joing the group on their own (through the subscribe address, I presume). Marina |
Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
Marina,
I was going to create two subgroups, one for moderators and the otherI would say create them before sending the Go email, or wait until you receive the "completed" notice. Either way should be fine, but I wouldn't risk creating them while the transfer is in progress. Shal |

Marina,
I have another small group I created to test Groups.io.That's odd. I found that group in the directory and I don't see any bold-faced word. In fact, it doesn't look like the directory shows any formatting that the group Description might have. Or maybe you've gone on to other testing by now, as that group's Description looks very short (one sentence) and no formatting also on the group's home page: If you're still seeing one of those words in bold, maybe there's a plug-in or other software affecting what your browser is showing you. Otherwise I don't know how to explain it. Shal |

![]() I have one simple and short sentence in my pending member message. It's not even a question. "The moderators of the xxx list ask that you hit reply to this message and identify yourself. Thank you. " It is a neighborhood list of over 3000 members that has been active for over 17 of the 33 years that I have been living here. I know most of the people who live here and can recognize many of the email addresses. Not all the members live here, and there are always new people moving in, so I need to know who they are before approving. I don't need their whole life story, although some do offer quite a bit of information! Sometimes it is entertaining. Some people can just hit reply and send because their full name comes out in the From field. I resend the message every day until they respond (or not, because they can't be bothered to check their spam.) It's only been three weeks that we're with , so I haven't had a chance to see a pending member drop off the list. In Yahoogroups, I have pending members going back to July. I've never rejected there because I didn't want them to see that the moderator did the rejection, but that the system did. If Mark does put a comment box on the subscribe page, I will have to change my above sentence so that people who do comment with their identity, don't reply to the pending member message. Yesterday I had someone try to subscribe, who actually was already subscribed for many years, but hadn't read her recent messages. The address she tried to subscribe with had a typo in the domain. I knew she wasn't going to get any messages, so I just deleted it. She finally figured it out and posted her message. I've got so many more stories, not pending member related, as I'm sure you all do, too. Lots of lazy people and highly educated people that are just plain (can't think of a nice word to put in here) when it comes to some of the simpler things. Debbie ? Re: Pending Subscription

Shal,
All I can say is before I approved this person, they replied to my email asking them if they got the Pending Subscription email, which they told me No...I did ask them to check their Spam folder. I have two more people I have not approved yet, and I have asked them the same question about the Pending Subscription, but no word back from them yet. One member on GMF thought I should send this problem to Support, so I did. Mark emailed me asking for the email addresses of these three people, so I sent that information to him. Not long after I sent that information to Mark I received a request from a new person to join, and this time I got the email from them pertaining to the Pending Subscription. Go figure. Don |
Re: Messages to Members - more than one in Welcome and Pending
mary,
I need to send different "pending" and "welcome" messages and I seeIt only allows one of each type to be active. There should be no problem having both a Pending Subscription notice and a Welcome notice active at the same time. I have both in some of my groups. Shal |
Re: Pending Subscription
#membership
Don,
I looked at the Most Recent Successful Delivery, and it said Message;Ok, this was after you approved the member. So I'm not sure the evidence for what happened to the Pending notices should still be here. It does say that there were no unsuccessful attempts, so that likely means that the pending notices were accepted by the person's email service, but I'm not 100% sure. All notices should be bounce tracked, just like message posts are, I'd cite it as a bug if I had evidence that one wasn't tracked. Shal |
Re: Group Moderation Question
#groupowner
#moderation
Marina,
I would like to give the main group members the opportunity to contactIn the Message Policies section of the mod subgroup's settings, check "Allow Non Subscribers to Post Posts by non-subscribers will be moderated, instead of rejected". The two limitations are: 1) Non-members here means any non-member; there's no way to restrict it to just members of the primary group. 2) Messages from the primary group members are moderated when posting to the mod subgroup. This one might be considered an advantage, but I mention it because it is not optional. Shal |
