Re: Individual vs Digest messages - links at bottom of emails differ

Dotty,

I would particularly like to see a link to Group Home.
Mark may have been too clever by half. The group's email address appears in the Digest header and the footer, and it is a link - to the group's home page. That leaves:

Contact Group Owner
Terms Of Service

I agree that not having those seems like an oversight. I encourage you to suggest them in the beta group.

Individual vs Digest messages - links at bottom of emails differ

I've noticed that there is a set of links available at the bottom of Individual messages from groups.io, that do not appear at the bottom of Digest messages.?

The Individual messages have the standard reply options (View/Reply online, Reply to Group, Reply to Sender, Mute this Topic, New Topic).? Then below that, there are the additional options (Change Subscription, Group Home, Contact Group Owner, Terms of Service, Unsubscribe).?

When messages are received in Digest form, there are the standard reply options listed under each message.? But the additional options available in Individual form, are not shown below the final message in the Digest.? There does appear at the very top of the Digest, the link to Change Subscription.? And at the very bottom, a link to Unsubscribe.?

I think the additional options should be added to the bottom of the Digest form, as they could be useful to any subscribers, regardless of their choice of message delivery.
I would particularly like to see a link to Group Home.? I keep getting questions from my "older" members (I'm one of them), who aren't sure how to get to the website to view photos or files that are mentioned in their email messages.? They were used to clicking on the thumbnails in the Y!Group Update messages that told them photos had been added.? (One of the few things about Y! that I miss.? That, and the options for reorganizing photos.? But I understand those things are perhaps on the ToDo list.)

I checked the settings for my group, to make sure there was nothing i could change.? I also have a couple of test subscriptions so that I can see messages as non-owners are seeing them, both on Individual and Digest delivery.? Am I missing something?

Re: Question: Archives, Subscription Options, Icons on Front Page, Time Stamps

Sharon,

1. Archives ¡ª How long are messages in the archives preserved?
Indefinitely. As long as Groups.io remains in business I think.

2. Subscription Options -- I want to be able to send special notices
that are delivered to everyone immediately no matter what their
subscription options are.
There's a "Disable No Email" group option so that members would have to select at least Special Notices. Of course, you can't be sure that members look at their inbox, or don't have a mail filter, etc.

3. Subscription Options ¡ª who can send special notices? Everyone,
moderators, subscribers?
Moderators.

4. Group Settings ¡ª Under Group settings the icons are confusing:
And pretty much meaningless. I think they were originally intended to match the option - as the reverse arrow suggests "reply". But Mark soon ran out of icons, and/or imagination.

5. Subgrouos ¡ª Can main group members send messages to a subgroup If
they are not a subscriber to it?
Optional, sort-of.

Subgroups have the "Allow Non Subscribers to Post" option just like primary groups, but it works the same - allows anyone (general public) to post (all such postings are moderated). I've asked for a subgroup setting to specifically allow primary group members to post unmoderated, but it was a side conversation under a different topic. So perhaps it should be raised again in a topic of its own.

6. Time Stamps ¡ª Several members of our Tech Pod were going through
all the settings and joining and approving members, etc. We notices
that the time stamps were different on the same messages. Shouldn¡¯t
those all be the same ...
No. Each member sees times expressed in their own time zone, per their Account setting.

Re: What is a subgroup

Sharon,

Which raises another question ¡ªI¡¯m assuming people can have different
subscription options on subgroups?
Yes. Different Profile information too if they want. And of course you can also give them different posting privileges.

Re: Messages from pending members

Mike,

... And I changed the "Welcome" statement by asking them ...
...
I would much prefer to get this message to the new applicant BEFORE he
joins the group, not after.
Instead of asking in your Welcome message, you could create a "Pending Subscription" member notice. That will be sent when they apply for membership. Then you can leave their application pending until you get their reply.

Don't know! ?But when you create the subgroup, you can select your subgroup from your main group. Just click on the member you want in the subgroup and he is in. No invites etc

I agree that this Yahoo is useful, but right now I'm doing something similar by making all new member's first posts moderated.? And I changed the "Welcome" statement by asking them what the letters RGS stand for, as only true fans of this will know the answer.? Not perfect, but better than nothing.

Re: Questions: Sign In & Password

Sharon,

When people sign into the website for the first time, they have to set
up a password. There is no message that tells them that.
That's because setting a password is optional.

One can operate perfectly well using the "Email me a link to log in" button when needed, and never use a password.

You can click on forget password but it¡¯s confusing because people
don¡¯t have one.
I think rewording that is a good idea. Perhaps something like:
"Forgot your password, or want to set one?"
("I prefer "forgot", "forget" sounds too much like it could be a command telling the site to forget one's password.)

I encourage you to post that in beta.

If they enter a password and confirm it from an email, it isn¡¯t ¡°set¡±.
I'm not sure what this means. Did they use the "Sign Up" link on the site and enter an email address and password there? That would certainly set their password, but they'd still have to confirm their email address by responding to the email Groups.io sends to them.

It¡¯s a different process to set the email on their account page. That
drop down is in the upper right corner, not in the left menu.
Again I'm confused about the context. Different than what? I don't think there's anything on the left menu that lets you change your email address, only the Account page.

Unless they follow that separate process, they have to sign in each
time they go to the website.
That's never true, unless you log out or you clear your browser cookies (and some people do use security settings which clear cookies after each session). Otherwise a log-in lasts for 30 days before you must log in again.

Are they doing something wrong? Missing something?
I think so. The Sign Up and Log In flows at Groups.io were honed aggressively during the early years to make them as simple as practical.

The only aspect I can think of that is unusual or may seem magical is that certain of the emails sent by Groups.io in those flows contain links which, when followed, will log them into the site. While logged in that way they can set a password, if desired, or just use the site.

If these people can outline exactly what they did, and what the site presented to them, then perhaps we can figure out where they went wrong, or where the site can be improved.

Key fact: if the upper right corner is showing your name, then you're logged in. Hover there to see the email address for the account (the email address you are logged in with). If the upper right corner shows your email address instead then you haven't yet set a display name for your account.

Question: Archives, Subscription Options, Icons on Front Page, Time Stamps

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Questions:

1. Archives ¡ª How long are messages in the archives preserved?

2. Subscription Options -- ?I want to be able to send special notices that are delivered to everyone immediately no matter what their subscription options are. These are security alerts, dangerous weather alerts, major event cancellations, etc. Is that possible no matter what the other options are?

3. Subscription Options ¡ª who can send special notices? Everyone, moderators, subscribers?

4. Group Settings ¡ª Under Group settings the icons are confusing:
  • Slashed zero in front of ?"Archives are visible to subscribers only.¡± ¡ª what does the icon mean?
  • A reply arrow in front of?"Messages are set to reply to group.¡± ¡ª What does the arrow mean?
  • Slashed zero in front of "Members can edit their posts.¡± ¡ª ambiguous No and Yes at the same time.
  • Slashed zero in front of "Members can set their subscriptions to no email.¡±¡ª another ambiguous.
I think the Group Settings would be perfectly clear without the icons as long as they said can or cannot. Or if both icons for each setting appeared with one crossed out.

5. Subgrouos ¡ª Can main group members send messages to a subgroup If they are not a subscriber to it? For example, we have a Board list that people often want to send information to but don¡¯t want to be a member of that subgroup.

6. Time Stamps ¡ª Several members of our Tech Pod were going through all the settings and joining and approving members, etc. We notices that the time stamps were different on the same messages. Shouldn¡¯t those all be the same since they would be the time of the ?server?

Thank you,

searching for groups

Hello ..

a question - might there be plans for an enhancement of the search function for groups ..?

some members from my lists think that thi might be more comfortable and powerful.

one example: "I wanted to search for popular music groups. I could type in music and get music, mostly with few members or messages, or i can type in popular and get a bunch of active groups i couldn't care less about."
