Re: How to fully migrate a Yahoo group to here?

Mike,

We have a members-only Yahoo group that has developed a major problem, in that we can't post or view photos on it.?

The one bit of bad news is that if you can't access your Yahoo Group's photos, there's a good chance that the Easy Group Transfer agent won't be able to either. So your transfer might not include your archive of Photos.

The good news is that if the Yahoo Group's Photos section does become available again you can re-run the transfer and select to transfer only the Photos section.

Yahoo Help shows a very large number of complaints about the photo problem, and they apparently seem totally content to not fix it.
?
Yahoo Groups has been officially unsupported for a few years now. That said, the operations people over there have been fixing things like message delivery and access problems with Files and Photos, but not always promptly.

Re: How to fully migrate a Yahoo group to here?

Ken,

Really? Is that true? That will effectively put the kybosh on moving many other Yahoo Groups here.

As Duane and Bruce pointed out, there is now the requirement to pre-pay one year of Premium in order to use the Easy Group Transfer method. After that year your group can be allowed to automatically revert to Basic (free) if you decide not to extend the Premium service.

If there's any value to the time and effort it will save you, then it is a very good deal. Also, it goes to support Groups.io as a product - which does not have advertising or other means of support. No ads, none of the tracking and use of your personal information that goes with advertising.

OTOH, you can still DIY the transfer for free. You'll have to copy the content of your Yahoo Group yourself and upload it yourself. Downloading your Y!Group can be made easier by use of 's PG Offline product.

For the members list you can invite them for free, or for one month of Premium ($10) you can use the Direct Add feature.

When I moved a group last year (before Mark introduced the charge for all transfers), I had to pay for a year of Premium in order to transfer the message archive of 600,000 emails. I put this to the list, and everyone was so sick of Yahoo that I could have raised the $110 from member contributions on just the first day.

A transfer won't include attachments.? You should read through the procedure at /yahootransfer, as well as checking the WIki pages on this group, beginning with /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups
?
One thing I'd check on for your group is the amount of storage used by Photos.? It sounds like you may be using a lot, so you'll want to make sure they'll fit here.? You do have the option of automatically reducing the size when they're transferred, if that won't make them unusable for your purposes.

I think you'll find that folks here will be glad to help you figure out the details to make the transfer as easy as possible.

I'd like to discuss moving our group to Groups.io.
The main point right now is to stress that this is the Group Managers' Forum (in other words a forum for the managers of all the groups hosted by Groups.io, should they choose to join) and not a Groups.io Managers' Forum. This group is not monitored by anyone at Groups.io (at least not in any formal sense) but simply serves as a peer - to - peer group to help one another resolve any queries that arise on a day to day basis.

Having got that out of the way I can say with almost 100% certainty that migrating your Group from Yahoo will provide you and your members with a greatly improved collective experience. Everything on your list would be transferred across*, but (and it's an important but) you might well find that you need a paid - for group rather than a free one because of the respective storage limits each type of group provides; see /static/pricing for further and better particulars about what each of the three flavours of group has to offer.

* Unless something at Yahoo stops it happening; if you cannot view things at the moment then whatever is causing that might prevent Groups.io carrying out a complete transfer.

How to fully migrate a Yahoo group to here?

I'm with the Fort Worth Astronomical Society.? We have a members-only Yahoo group that has developed a major problem, in that we can't post or view photos on it.? Yahoo Help shows a very large number of complaints about the photo problem, and they apparently seem totally content to not fix it.? I'd like to discuss moving our group to Groups.io.? That move would have to include everything (membership, conversations, files, photos, attachments, and everything else).? How would we proceed?? After your reply we will discuss and vote on this at an upcoming board meeting.?
Thank you, I hope this can work smoothly.

Re: Suggestion Box.

This group is made up of other users, no one from GIO monitors it.

The "official suggestion box" is the beta group,

There was a topic started there a couple of days ago where multi-layer albums was mentioned,

Suggestion Box.

Hi All!
I am very new to Groups.io. My first duty is to thank Groups.io for providing us with the opportunity to create special interest Groups.
I have just created a group that involves the uploading of many images and something that would be beneficial to my group is the ability to
group image types?into folders within a folder thereby short circuiting the process of accessing a certain subject area.
I have looked for something that could be best described as a "Suggestion Box" but have not found anything. It is my hope that someone
could direct me to a suggestion box, or that the administrators of Groups.io see this post and would explore the possibility of being able, within the "Photos"
section, to create folders within folders. Thank-you!!

Best regards, Chris !?

Re: question about archive visibility #question #archive

Shal,

Thank you for your reply. I am relieved that that is the case, in spite of the confusing column header.

Yes, you are correct. It does say, "+ Apply for membership in this group." Sorry about that.

I agree the date header should say something like Applied or the other ideas on the beta thread. Thanks for taking it over there. Otherwise it's confusing.

Newbie is here. Is there any way I can automate the adds into the appropriate subgroups when people signup to my organization through a web form.
For Premium/Enterprise groups, I believe this is possible using the groups.io Applications Program Interface (API). However, that requires a skill set that I don't have.?There is a group for this at?. It does not see very much activity.

Instead, what we do is have the web form post an email to a "member management" subgroup via an email integration. Someone subsequently follows up on those messages to Direct Add the applicant to the group(s).

I hope this helps, but it probably doesn't.

Shal, what is this change supposed to do?
The Italian and French quote separators are used so that they will be properly seen as quotes within a message.? When a French Canadian member replies on my groups, their quote begins with Le [day][month][year] in French. (Similar for Italian)? Up until now, they weren't treated as a quote, so the whole thing was seen when reading online instead of being hidden in the ellipse.

It should be configurable on/off.? With my group this would be a very important feature, one that I really miss from yahoo groups.

It has been suggested (and discussed) on beta.? If implemented, I hope it's an option that can be disabled per group.? I've repeatedly told my members not to notify the group for files, but some still do.

Is it supposed to change the standard English "On Sun, Mar 10, 2019 at 12:22 PM, Marina wrote:" to the Italian wording?

Re: Verifications.io

Edited

SIRMick,

Is verifications.io connected to groups.io ...
It is a common misconception that groups.io might be related to something else .io - but in fact that's akin to wondering if yahoogroups.com is related to any other .com company.

The only connection is that they lease their domain name from the same Top Level Domain (TLD) registrar. In the case of .io that's a British company operating on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory - the io in .io stands for "Indian Ocean", though the similarity to the computer term I/O (Input/Output) is undoubtedly what inspires many of those who choose it.

Verifications.io

SIRMick

I have just been reading this article?

Is verifications.io connected to groups.io and if so should I be advising all my members to change the email account passwords?

Thanks

[mod note: no and no.]
