Re: Word Press (WP) Integrations?

Dan,
I contacted Wilson, the owner of the other group transfer service, to find out more. If I find out anything interesting, I'll post it here. Donald On Fri, 11 May 2018 19:51:09 -0700, "Dan Hartford" <danhartfordphoto@...> wrote: Donald, [excess quote trimmed by moderator] |

Dan,
We also are not putting a link to the Groups.IO message page on our"now"? In any case, I'm by no means a WP expert, but you can also have linkage from the group's home page back to the WP blog using the embedding tools WP provides. For example: Presumably the same thing would work on a group Wiki page, and possibly in a message or even the Guidelines. Thank you for your detailed reply. I'll have to look through it in detail. We already have our WP site so are already paying for hosting (BlueHost). We're just looking for better integration than we had with Yahoo. We already have one step in that direction with the ability to Direct Add new members to IO when they join the club. It's manual but simple and we don't have to get into that Invite, lost invitation, invite again, accept but doesn't' put in real name, etc. cycle. We also are not putting a link to the Groups.IO message page on our site which may satisfy the Board that it's integrated. But you also provided some things to think about - at least in terms of 2nd part. Thanks -- Dan -----Original Message-----

I'm not a big WP person, either, but I have several WP handbooks and once ran a WP web site. If you're thinking of migrating a Yahoo Group to groups.io then eventually to a hosted site, consider this before having to do the migration twice: "Perhaps you're considering moving to phpBB or Wordpress or maybe you just want a better way to search Yahoo groups. We offer a bespoke migration service to a new forum or merge with an existing forum." I am friends with the person who develops PG Offline and also the above service but have not tried what he offers because I already moved my groups to IO and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for a hosting service, but you are thinking of using web hosting anyway, so this might be the best approach. You can find an email link on his web site and inquire about it. I would ask him if he has a sample WP or phpBB site you can browse through to see what it looks like and how it works, maybe get a referral to a group you can join to see how the user experience is. While you're at it, you can ask for a referral to both types of sites, one for WP and one for phpBB. That way you can decide on which might be a better solution for you. Don't forget to ask about how pictures, files, folders, etc., are handled. There are plugins for WP that will provide a forum. This is just a sample of some easy ones (I have not tried any of these): I would suggest, though, that you stick with dedicated forum software that's full-featured like phpBB or vBulletin. Or one of the mailing list software packages. Here are two aquarium fish related phpBB and vBulletin forums: ad=h uses phpBB software (free) uses vBulletin software (not free) I actually set up a complete forum for an aquatic plant club for the SW Ohio area using phpBB. It worked very well. The club fell apart over time and now the web site and forum site is no longer hosted anywhere. Putting the forum together was not a cake walk by any means, but I never did one before and put it together in a week or two. It took a lot of my evening time, so expect to spend some time with it. If you use dedicated bulletin board software, you will no doubt have many more options to choose from to manage your board. I believe there are plugins for these two packages, too. Most web hosting sites have phpBB in their software control panel so it's easy to install. My other suggestion was to install Majordomo or Listserv mailing list software (or similar) if all you need is a messaging system that broadcasts all posts to all members. If you need an area for pictures, files, or other things, that's beyond the scope of what I've done, but you should be able to find software to install on your hosted site that can handle those. You might even be able to find software that will handle everything without using separate packages to take care of those features. The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it. --Selwyn Duke |

Chat Anyone?

Automated email to members who put in a join request, suddenly not working
Ok, this is frustrating. When a member joins, he's automatically sent a questionnaire.? In the past few days, that feature has stopped working, we've never had an issue before.? Any reason for the change in behavior?
Thanks... |

Word Press (WP) Integrations?
#integration
PACC Digital Chair
Hi,
Just getting going with IO with 2 live suibgroups so far and I've been meaning to ask about integrations.? These sub groups are in relation to a club who's main web site and membership list are built on the Word Press platform.? One of the goals (longer term goal than avoiding Yahoo problems) is to have a discussion group like IO more tightly integrated with our WP system.? The first goal is for the Groups to establish membership (at the group and sub-group level) based on various attributes of the Word Press Users table.? So, for example, our "Main" group as well as the members group in IO would be all the people who are "Active" in the WP Users Table.? The members of the IO "Board" subbgroup would be all the? people in WP who have a? role of? "Administrator", etc.? ?In other words as we make changes to users in WP (for example we deactivate them via a chron job when their membership expires unless they've paid dues for the following period) they would be added or removed from our IO group and appropriate Sub groups.? I'm not clear if this sort of thing is the intention of your Integrations feature or not, and if so what you have for Word Press? The 2nd, and lower priority, is to have the groups tool embedded in WP (I guess as a plug in - I'm not a WP person). Can someone let me know what we can do in this area? thanks -- Dan |

Re: Poll results
If you use MS Word, you can create a table from the text of the results pretty easily.
Drag your cursor over the results (starting with "1.") to select the text of the results. In MS Word, open a new document and "Paste - Keep Text Only" to paste in only the text. Should have something like this: 1. Yes, I would attend.
100%
17 votes
2. No, I would not attend
0%
0 votes Now, select that text and do Insert -> Table -> Convert Text to Table.? Select "Separate text at Paragraphs" and set Number of Columns to 3 and click Okay. Boom, Now you have a table of the results:

Re: Poll results
You still have to do that manually. The easiest way I've found is to get a screenshot of the results, crop it accordingly, then post it to the thread (if you allow attachments.) Another way is to copy down the results and enter them as part of a new message.

Re: Direct add not complete after 4 days
My Direct Adds appear as quickly as I can change screens so no, it is not normal to take so long. As Owner, I also get a notification that we have a new member in the group. I believe that's the only notice I receive other than, as Bruce said, just going to the Members page and seeing them there. I did set up a "Direct Add" Member Notice so that the new member gets a welcome note - if you also have that set, you might check with the members and see if they received the notice.
Hope you can sort it out. Barb |

Down for Maintenance Notice
Hi all,
used to YG breakdowns, changes of features and functionality in 2014 without any announcements, not to speak of a complete lack of support or assistance, I am extremely grateful for the care and accuracy Mark provides for his groups. Sure feedback of existing groups help him to enhance his service, so this is a two-way-ticket. Anyway, considering all this I really don?t think a few hours of timeout without becoming aware make so much difference, especially since all the mails are stored and nothing gets lost. Could it be we are getting a little too fastidious? Victoria |
