Re: Word Press (WP) Integrations? #integration

Donald,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I'll have to look through it in detail.
We already have our WP site so are already paying for hosting (BlueHost).
We're just looking for better integration than we had with Yahoo. We
already have one step in that direction with the ability to Direct Add new
members to IO when they join the club. It's manual but simple and we don't
have to get into that Invite, lost invitation, invite again, accept but
doesn't' put in real name, etc. cycle. We also are not putting a link to
the Groups.IO message page on our site which may satisfy the Board that it's
integrated.

But you also provided some things to think about - at least in terms of 2nd
part.

Thanks -- Dan

The 2nd, and lower priority, is to have the groups tool embedded in WP (I

Can someone let me know what we can do in this area?

I'm not a big WP person, either, but I have several WP handbooks and
once ran a WP web site. If you're thinking of migrating a Yahoo Group
to groups.io then eventually to a hosted site, consider this before
having to do the migration twice:

"Perhaps you're considering moving to phpBB or Wordpress or maybe you
just want a better way to search Yahoo groups. We offer a bespoke
migration service to a new forum or merge with an existing forum."

I am friends with the person who develops PG Offline and also the
above service but have not tried what he offers because I already
moved my groups to IO and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for a
hosting service, but you are thinking of using web hosting anyway, so
this might be the best approach. You can find an email link on his web
site and inquire about it. I would ask him if he has a sample WP or
phpBB site you can browse through to see what it looks like and how it
works, maybe get a referral to a group you can join to see how the
user experience is. While you're at it, you can ask for a referral to
both types of sites, one for WP and one for phpBB. That way you can
decide on which might be a better solution for you. Don't forget to
ask about how pictures, files, folders, etc., are handled.

There are plugins for WP that will provide a forum. This is just a
sample of some easy ones (I have not tried any of these):

I would suggest, though, that you stick with dedicated forum software
that's full-featured like phpBB or vBulletin. Or one of the mailing
list software packages.

Here are two aquarium fish related phpBB and vBulletin forums:

ad=h
uses phpBB software (free)

uses vBulletin software (not free)

I actually set up a complete forum for an aquatic plant club for the
SW Ohio area using phpBB. It worked very well. The club fell apart
over time and now the web site and forum site is no longer hosted
anywhere.

Putting the forum together was not a cake walk by any means, but I
never did one before and put it together in a week or two. It took a
lot of my evening time, so expect to spend some time with it.

If you use dedicated bulletin board software, you will no doubt have
many more options to choose from to manage your board. I believe there
are plugins for these two packages, too. Most web hosting sites have
phpBB in their software control panel so it's easy to install.

My other suggestion was to install Majordomo or Listserv mailing list
software (or similar) if all you need is a messaging system that
broadcasts all posts to all members.

If you need an area for pictures, files, or other things, that's
beyond the scope of what I've done, but you should be able to find
software to install on your hosted site that can handle those. You
might even be able to find software that will handle everything
without using separate packages to take care of those features.
