Re: Questions: Sign In & Password

Sharon,

When people sign into the website for the first time, they have to set
up a password. There is no message that tells them that.
That's because setting a password is optional.

One can operate perfectly well using the "Email me a link to log in" button when needed, and never use a password.

You can click on forget password but it¡¯s confusing because people
don¡¯t have one.
I think rewording that is a good idea. Perhaps something like:
"Forgot your password, or want to set one?"
("I prefer "forgot", "forget" sounds too much like it could be a command telling the site to forget one's password.)

I encourage you to post that in beta.

If they enter a password and confirm it from an email, it isn¡¯t ¡°set¡±.
I'm not sure what this means. Did they use the "Sign Up" link on the site and enter an email address and password there? That would certainly set their password, but they'd still have to confirm their email address by responding to the email Groups.io sends to them.

It¡¯s a different process to set the email on their account page. That
drop down is in the upper right corner, not in the left menu.
Again I'm confused about the context. Different than what? I don't think there's anything on the left menu that lets you change your email address, only the Account page.

Unless they follow that separate process, they have to sign in each
time they go to the website.
That's never true, unless you log out or you clear your browser cookies (and some people do use security settings which clear cookies after each session). Otherwise a log-in lasts for 30 days before you must log in again.

Are they doing something wrong? Missing something?
I think so. The Sign Up and Log In flows at Groups.io were honed aggressively during the early years to make them as simple as practical.

The only aspect I can think of that is unusual or may seem magical is that certain of the emails sent by Groups.io in those flows contain links which, when followed, will log them into the site. While logged in that way they can set a password, if desired, or just use the site.

If these people can outline exactly what they did, and what the site presented to them, then perhaps we can figure out where they went wrong, or where the site can be improved.

Key fact: if the upper right corner is showing your name, then you're logged in. Hover there to see the email address for the account (the email address you are logged in with). If the upper right corner shows your email address instead then you haven't yet set a display name for your account.

Question: Archives, Subscription Options, Icons on Front Page, Time Stamps

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Questions:

1. Archives ¡ª How long are messages in the archives preserved?

2. Subscription Options -- ?I want to be able to send special notices that are delivered to everyone immediately no matter what their subscription options are. These are security alerts, dangerous weather alerts, major event cancellations, etc. Is that possible no matter what the other options are?

3. Subscription Options ¡ª who can send special notices? Everyone, moderators, subscribers?

4. Group Settings ¡ª Under Group settings the icons are confusing:
  • Slashed zero in front of ?"Archives are visible to subscribers only.¡± ¡ª what does the icon mean?
  • A reply arrow in front of?"Messages are set to reply to group.¡± ¡ª What does the arrow mean?
  • Slashed zero in front of "Members can edit their posts.¡± ¡ª ambiguous No and Yes at the same time.
  • Slashed zero in front of "Members can set their subscriptions to no email.¡±¡ª another ambiguous.
I think the Group Settings would be perfectly clear without the icons as long as they said can or cannot. Or if both icons for each setting appeared with one crossed out.

5. Subgrouos ¡ª Can main group members send messages to a subgroup If they are not a subscriber to it? For example, we have a Board list that people often want to send information to but don¡¯t want to be a member of that subgroup.

6. Time Stamps ¡ª Several members of our Tech Pod were going through all the settings and joining and approving members, etc. We notices that the time stamps were different on the same messages. Shouldn¡¯t those all be the same since they would be the time of the ?server?

Thank you,

Sharon

searching for groups

Hello ..

a question - might there be plans for an enhancement of the search function for groups ..?

some members from my lists think that thi might be more comfortable and powerful.

one example: "I wanted to search for popular music groups. I could type in music and get music, mostly with few members or messages, or i can type in popular and get a bunch of active groups i couldn't care less about."

I like that suggestion. I encourage you to "drop it in the suggestion box", that is post it in beta.

Questions: Sign In & Password

I just met with out Tech Pod to demonstrate how Groups.io works. These are detail people so it drove me nuts but I have to ask these questions.

When people sign into the website for the first time, they have to set up a password. There is no message that tells them that. It only gives a place for a password and requires that you enter it. You can click on forget password but it¡¯s confusing because people don¡¯t have one.

If they enter a password and confirm it from an email, it isn¡¯t ¡°set¡±. It¡¯s a different process to set the email on their account page. Re: Messages from pending members

My problem is that I don't get the prospective members reply until after I receive the message to approve a new member.? In

YG the applicant's reply was part of the approval message, which for me worked better.

Or at least that is my understanding for that function.

Re: What is a subgroup

Barb,

Or is it possible to just have the emails of the group members
transferred over and put directly into a subgroup? As in
¡°Transfer Group X, but make it a subgroup of Group Y¡±
You have to create the subgroup before initiating the transfer into it, but yes: you can name the Yahoo Group and the subgroup in the "Go" email to the transfer agent.

Unless you specify NOT to copy the Y!Group's membership, each (non-bouncing) email in the Y!Group will be added to the subgroup, AND to the primary group if not already a primary group member. That may or may not be what you want, but if it is it will save you the trouble of manually selecting the primary group members who are to be put into the subgroup.

And of course, unless you specify otherwise, the rest of the Y!Group's content (conversations, photos, files, etc.) will be copied into the subgroup.

No. If they are members of the main group they already receive all the news through the group.
There is no point in subscribing to a separate newsletter.

The main group is the 'historic' group, founded in 1999, with over 4000 members.
The newsletter is fairly recent and has around 800 subscribers, who are not interested in joining the main group.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Re: What is a subgroup

Perfect, this is the info I wanted, I think one of my old groups will better function as a subgroup, so I won¡¯t bother to transfer it over, just add folks into the subgroup.

Barb,

Another basic question - what is a subgroup and what are pros/cons vs
having a totally separate group?
A subgroup is a group whose membership is a subset of a primary group. Moderatrice's example with 2 & 3 being subgroups of 1 is a good example of a situation where the membership naturally has that relationship.

An advantage of using a primary group and subgroups is that their email & web addresses have a common element that ties them together. See my example of how this works, here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/3483

Another advantage of using subgroups is that you (a primary group moderator) have more control over their membership: you don't need to invite people to join the subgroups, once they are members of your primary group you can simply add them to and remove them from subgroups at need. The subgroups also retain the ordinary join/request mechanisms, you can let primary group members join subgroups on their own, or require approval.

Another advantage is more control over the visibility of content. A subgroup can share its message archive with members of the primary group without sharing it with the public at large.

Note: every owner/mod of the primary group implicitly has owner/mod privileges in all the subgroups. This commonality of management can be either an advantage or disadvantage, depending on the needs of your communities.

As a relatively new owner of a groups.io group but a long time owner of a YahooGroup, both with restricted memberships, I have noticed that for people wanting to join a groups.io there is no "Reason for joining" message as in YahooGroups. Is such a feature not available in groups.io or have I missed something?

Re: Messages from pending members

I gather this is on the wish list..... In our case where my groups are
restricted to membership of our society a little box where they could
say who they were so we can cross check our membership records would be
useful. If we cannot recognise them by their email address it sometimes
involves quite a lot of email interchange before we can approve (or
otherwise).

Thanks Duane,
On re-reading Facebook "Page" is specifically mentioned, rather than Facebook "Group" or Facebook "Timeline".
Facebook Pages contain mainly "announcement" entries - so a one-way flow from Facebook to Groups IO makes sense¡

It looks like it's one way, FB to group, based on the explanation on the Features page, "Facebook - Post to your group whenever there is an update to a Facebook Page."

Facebook Integration

I run a Facebook group on a subject related to the subject of one of my Groups IO groups.
What does Facebook Integration offer?
Is it just the one-way display of a Facebook post in Groups IO?
Or is there a reverse path so that Groups IO comments on the post are reflected back to Facebook?
