Owner/Moderator with 2 Email addresses

My account with groups.io is with this email address, which is my personal address.? I am now creating all the groups we need to switch to groups.io - there are 23 of them - they need to be with my work email address.? Short of subscribing myself with my work email and then going no mail with my personal one, is there any way to have two emails associated with one account where you can choose which one to use for any one list?

Thanks,

Uploading Stuff to GIO (was: How to Effect a Transfer)

Larry -- You can upload a folder-full of photos at a time as follows:

  1. Browse to /g/groupname/photos
  2. Click the "New Album" button
  3. Provide a title and description and click the Create button
  4. Click the "Add Photos" button
  5. In the resulting dialog box, click "Browse..."
  6. Using Ctrl-Click, Shift-Click or Ctrl-A for the entire folder, select all the images you want to appear in this folder.
  7. The dialog box will be populated with thumbnail images.
  8. Click the Add button.
  9. Repeat for each photo album you need to transfer.
And, do you mean it is not possible to upload files? PG Offline can download files from Yahoo Groups. Once downloaded, how can those files be uploaded to the new groups.io group? One file at a time or in folders?
You can upload an entire directory structure of files to groups.io (including the recursive uploading of subfolders) using the "Upload Directory" function. It is, however, not very intuitive. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/34328513#18960?for details.

Has anyone successfully used PG Offline for this function?
I cannot speak to that.

To clarify, I have only small groups with picture and file storage well under the 1 GB free limit. With only about 100 members in each group, I will just send invitations to join the new groups.io group using the membership list I exported from the Yahoo Group.
Make sure what you upload is a flat text file, with one email address per line. No intervening commas, no CSV or Excel files.

Alternatively, you can just cut-and-paste them into the invitation box.

Send the invitations?all at once.

You will get a message back saying you've reached the limit of invitations per day. Do not get upset about this. Just wait awhile, and all the invitations you sent will go out.

These are important issues for owners with only small groups. Please try to answer fully as I expect there is wide interest.
Fair enough. In turn, please understand that the heavy influx of new groups is rapidly becoming stressful for everyone. We are not responsible for what Yahoo Groups has done, and are doing our best to accommodate.

To clarify, that's after one year of premium service. You can
actually change it any time, but it won't take effect until your
current term expires. Many folks did (and still do) upgrade to
premium for a month now and then for specific tasks.
How can you upgrade for a month? Is there a pro-rata payment, or do we
have to pay for a year regardless?

Re: Group.io resources?

Thanks Bruce, that looks very useful.

I've also now created a button image to take folk from my site to groups.io. ? I attach it in case it's of use to anyone else. ? (I assume I'm not violating any copyright here as effectively this is just a sincere endorsement of groups.io. ? It's use is demonstrated at http://www.mozart.co.uk - bottom left of page.)?

Visible in full here.

Remember that email addresses are not displayed in full on the Groups

You'd need to do it manually if you're not paying for a transfer. It can be time consuming and "ownership" of all the items will be in
your name.? If the person that originally uploaded a picture is on
the new group, you can manually assign ownership to them (if you
know who it was.)? There's currently not a similar function for Files.

Alternately, you could take the route of having the users that uploaded the pictures and files in the first place be responsible for transferring their own files. In other words, share the responsibility. By the way, this is also an excellent way to purge storage space.

If you have checked only the "Restricted Membership" checkbox under Spam Control, and you later send someone an invitation, that person can accept the invite and begin posting immediately.?

HOWEVER...they *must* click on the link in the emailed invitation for that to work. If instead of accepting the invitation they click the "Join This Group" button or send a +subscribe message, their subscription will land in Pending, and you'll have to approve them manually.

I hope that made sense.

Apologies for the beginner questions.

Re: new to groups.io

Rhoda,

If you invite them, then no further approval is needed. Except if your group is unmoderated, you have to select something in Spam Control.

See this about invitations -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Inviting-new-members

See also about Welcome notices, etc. #4.

Thanks Bruce,

If someone is invited to join the group by moderator / owner, does that mean that they still need approval to join?? I am still working my way through the process..

Apologies for the beginner questions.

By member supplied content, do you mean the stuff in the group's Files area on the web?

As for "website will remain as will the ability to post and receive by email" I?assume that is with the caveat that "unless they later change their mind about that, too. ;-)

Hi, Bruce,

In your above line, "disable it" refers to disabling?what?!? ?

I actually said, in full:? Every subscriber who was transferred will receive a "transfer success" notification and given the opportunity to opt out of their membership in the new group unless you choose to disable it.

The final "it" means the transfer notification, which is disabled via a checkbox. The subscription setting that a subscriber may have in the Y!G -- "no email" or otherwise -- has absolutely no bearing on whether they receive this notification.

I hope that's more clear.

Bruce

Dave -- If you go to Admin>Promote from within your group, there are a few customizable tools to provide a subscription link on your personal web site. Choose the Form Option radio buttons on the left until the Preview looks the way you want it, then copy and paste the HTML below into your site wherever you want the button to appear.

You can also right-click on the (admittedly nondescript) groups.io logo at top left of any page and save a copy to use for your own purposes.

Hope this helps,

Every subscriber who was transferred will receive a "transfer success" notification and given the opportunity to opt out of their membership in the new group unless you choose to disable it. There is a checkbox for this in the transfer menus, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/12241?for details.

The "no email" setting in the Y!G has no effect on this, but whatever setting they had in the Y!G will be retained for regular group messages in the new group unless you disable "no email" in the group settings (look in the Message Policies block).

Hope this helps,
