Dates on Posted PHotos
I have a question and am hoping this group may have an answer.
I recently uploaded two test photos from my Iphone. ?The metadata captured by Groups.io shows that the photos were taken at 2:42 p.m.; and posted at 11:45 a.m. ?(clearly impossible). ?They were actually taken at 11:42 a.m. and they were posted at 11:45 a.m. Eastern Daylight time. ?The time zone on my ?group in Groups.io set to Eastern time. ?The time zone on my phone is set to Eastern time as well. ?So, the time taken on the photos in the metadata should be correct (but it isn't). Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and what could be done to correct it? Jean |
Re: Logging in to the Groups.io website for the first time
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand it to be one hour after the message with the live link?is sent from groups.io. The link won't work after that hour, hence the name.?I had the same concern about time lags in getting the message and potentially retrieving it from a spam folder with a dialup system, which was the reason for the suggestion of the?increase.
?
I don't think a member that?"can't be on line all the time" is really a problem. The total duration for?requesting the message, getting a reply, opening it and?actually?responding to the link in the reply should really take less than 10 minutes for most people.?Most of my members managed to accomplish those steps with no problem?before the time extension, when the message lasted only a half hour.

Fine-Grained Control Over the Group Messages You Receive from Groups.io
Brian Vogel
I am seeking feedback on the following, which I've already sent out on several groups on which I participate. ? It seems that virtually no one among the general membership is aware of some of the advanced features for e-mail delivery offered by Groups.io. ?These can be particularly helpful to those on high-traffic groups who do not wish to be inundated by e-mail regarding topics in which they have no interest.
Keep in mind that I wrote this for groups that have individuals who are blind or visually-impaired as their target audience, so for those of us with sight substitute "look for and click" for the "Screen reader find and activate" bits. I'd just like to know whether people think this describes both the layout of what's there and how it works reasonably well. ?Suggestions for improvement are, of course, welcome. ----------------------------------------- Advanced Preferences for Your Group Subscription I know that most folks participate by e-mail, but there are some features related to how your individual messages or digests are delivered to you that cannot be controlled by the e-mail interface but where you must log in to your Groups.io account and go to your subscription page.? If you have never logged in to the site and don¡¯t have a password, please see the section on doing just that, which is toward the end of this message,?first. Once you get to the main Groups.io webpage, , you will need to navigate to the Log in (two words) button and activate it.? Once you¡¯ve entered your username, which is the e-mail address you¡¯ve used to subscribe to the group(s) you routinely read, and password, then hit the Log in button beneath them you will be taken to the ¡°Your Groups¡± page. 1.??????? Do a screen reader find for ¡°Your Groups¡± which takes you to the ¡°Your Groups¡± dropdown button and activate it.? Arrow down through the list of groups to select the one for which you wish to set up your advanced preferences.? You will have to start back at this step for each group for which you wish to set up the advanced mail preferences. 2.?????? Do a screen reader find for ¡°Subscription¡± link and activate it. 3.?????? Just so you¡¯re aware these are on this page, there is a radio button cluster for the regular delivery options:? All Messages, Full Featured Digest, Plain Digest, Daily Summary, Special Notices Only, No email.? This is immediately followed by two checkboxes related to using a signature:? Use signature for web posting and Use signature for e-mail posting.? These are followed by the signature edit box, should you wish to set up a signature that goes on to all your messages if you check one of the previously mentioned checkboxes. 4.????? Do a screen reader find for ¡°Advanced¡± which will take you to the Advanced Preferences link.? Activate it. 5.?????? There are three major sections to the advanced preferences: a.?????? Message Selection.? There are two radio buttons:? All Messages and Following Only.? If the first is selected then every message sent to the group will be sent to you in the format you selected for e-mail delivery.?? If you select Following Only then the only messages you will receive are messages you¡¯ve chosen to follow.? There is a checkbox associated with ¡°Following Only,¡± ¡°First Message Also.¡±? If this checkbox is checked it serves as a selective override such that the first message in any new topic is sent to you so that you can see it? and elect to follow it with the link at the end of the message if you wish to keep monitoring this topic. b.????? Replies.? There is a checkbox, ¡°Auto follow replies,¡± which will make any topic that you start yourself, or any topic in which you reply to a message, followed.? This checkbox is generally only used if you have elected to use the ¡°Following Only¡± feature for message selection. c.?????? Max Attachment Size (only for groups that allow attachments).? This is followed by a dropdown box that allows you to choose from four different maximum sizes for attachments to be delivered to you via e-mail.? The default is unlimited size.? If you¡¯re using an internet service with data caps you may wish to change this.? If you choose the zero option it means that all attachments will be stripped before a message is sent to you. 6.????? Find the ¡°Save¡± button and activate it to save these settings. As you can see, if you choose a setup where you have elected to get messages with the ¡°Following Only¡± option combined with the ¡°First message also¡± checkbox this will greatly decrease the flow of e-mail you receive while allowing you to decide for each topic whether you wish to follow it to receive further messages or not.? If you do nothing then you will not receive any additional messages for that particular topic unless you hit the link to follow it at the end of the message or reply to it, if the ¡°auto follow replies¡± option was checked. ? Getting a Password to Log in to the Groups.io Website If you¡¯ve subscribed via e-mail you have a Groups.io login id, your e-mail address, but you¡¯ve never been assigned a password for the website.? To get one: 1.??????? In your web browser, go to the Groups.io main site login page:? /login 2.?????? Find the ¡°Forgot your password?¡± link and activate it. 3.?????? A page with a single edit box, e-mail address will open.? Enter your e-mail address in it. 4.????? Navigate to the one and only button on the page, ¡°Email Link to Log In,¡± and activate it. 5.?????? Watch your e-mail, including your spam/junk box, for a message from Groups.io that will contain a link you need to activate that takes you to your Groups.io profile page where you set your password.? This is the password you¡¯ll use to log in to any Groups.io group webpage where you wish to do something, such as changing your preferences, that requires you to be logged in to do.? I am a total newbie on groups.io and finding it much more confusing than I expected. ?Where should I look to find a definition of "duration of the reply?message"I? ?My first thought was that it refers for the window of time allowed for reply after receipt of the original message? ?However 1/2 hour would discriminates against members who cannot be on line all the time. ?And by how long is the new duration? ?"Cinderalla hour" is cute phrase, but uninformative. ? ?? Re: Message pending in triplicate
Sharon's message #1774 appeared in GMF's pending list in triplicate. Yet all three copies had the same message ID, so it clearly wasn't something that Sharon did, I think. It¡¯s possible that the triplicate message was on my end but I don¡¯t know how all of them could have had the same number. My server was down this morning and support was having trouble getting it back up again. In the mean time we were trying all sorts of things on this end and that end. So that could have caused weirdness. Sharon |

Shal, I reported a similar bug to Mark a couple of weeks ago, except that then they were only in duplicate. He either told me to let him know the next time I saw it, or that it was fixed. I don't remember but will try to find his response. J On Fri, May 19, 2017 at 1:44 PM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: That was odd. |

Sharon's message #1774 appeared in GMF's pending list in triplicate. Yet all three copies had the same message ID, so it clearly wasn't something that Sharon did, I think. The Message ID had groups.io's domain despite it (them?) having originated with her email service. So I think that means the duplication of the message has to have happened at Groups.io. Or else Groups.io somehow attached the same ID to three incoming copies -- which also doesn't seem right. It occurs to me (belatedly) that I should have left the other two copies pending for Mark's inspection, rather than deleting them. Oops. Shal -------- Original Message --------

Sharon,
A note for improvement: I searched existing groups to find one onI don't see anything relevant in the Trello to-do list, so you might want to mention this suggestion on beta@. As far as I know Mark doesn't read GMF for product improvements - that's what beta@ is for. Shal |

An answer to your query - I searched for shelter and it is clear that it searches the group description as well as the name. Not fond of the search either. It would be lovely to have a subject index of public groups. It would be up to owners to set a tag (s?) based on a library of available tags. A note for improvement: I searched existing groups to find one on "Scribus.¡± The search only returned the alphabet. No message about no such group. Would rather have found a group but a clear message that there wasn¡¯t one would be more welcome than the alphabet and searching pages of groups starting with S.

Re: Easy instructions for new mdmbers to create passwords?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBrian -
Thanks for your comments. I will consider some edits. I recognize the instructions I offered were overly detailed. As I explained, I'm dealing with members who are still very uncertain about the internet and computers. The groups are history-focused, and some valuable members are in their 80s and 90s. I wanted to offer them something that was as detailed as possible and that let them feel more confident. Those in the group who are internet savvy found the process quite intuitive and didn't need any instructions at all. Dano ?

I have a couple groups that tend to run in the right lanes of the information highway. For them I created the procedure outlined here: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/1630?.

??????Since I participate exclusively via the web interface I've long ago forgotten how one initially gets access to it. There are a number of folks on some groups on which I participate that have never logged in to the website. ?Since there are some controls under "Advanced Preferences" on the subscription page that cannot be set via the email interface (or at least not that I know of) I'm trying to write something up about them. ?However, I know that the first response will be, "But I don't have a password for the website and I have no idea how to get one to allow me to log on," so I'm asking here so I can include that information. |
