I did, and am using it now.
Ok, that was unexpectedly awkward. I used the speech bubble button on the left of the formatting bar to insert a quote my prior message, then tried to break it into sections as I normally do to make inline comments like this one. Inserting and removing newlines did not break it. Nor did attempting to Decrease Indent. Then I noticed that the?¡° (Blockquote) button was pushed. So I selected my inline text and un-pushed it. Rather than removing the Blockquote attribute from just my inline text, it removed it from the entire quoted message. Fine. So I re-applied Blockquote on the prior section and moved on.

It currently suffers one of the problems that (I think) got fixed in the old one: if your group "normalizes" HTML it nevertheless allows you to use and see in WYSIWYG formatting features that get stripped by normalization.
I reported this one and Mark reports it to be fixed. I haven't retested it.

One of the fun things is an insert tool for special characters - ¦¸ is the button icon for it. ¡ú It is a limited set ¡û but has many of the more useful glyphs.
I noticed in a view source of my message that the special characters are inserted as named . This probably explains how those particular glyphs were chosen. I tried to insert other Unicode glyphs using the < > (Source code) mode to insert them as numeric references, but that failed. They got converted to asterisks by the editor. Some kind of exploit defense perhaps?

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:
/g/beta/message/13653

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

  • INTERNAL: More work on integrating the TinyMCE editor.
This one's up first because I'm using it to compose this message. Which you'll notice is formatted, contrary to my usual practice of posting plain-text via email. Earlier in the week I posted So far I'm liking this new message editor about testing it. Please join in on that topic if you're testing it or curious about it.

  • INTERNAL: Reviewed ToS changes from Oracle. Almost ready.
A carry-over from last week. We'll have to see what Mark and Oracle come up with.

  • CHANGE: Changed price of premium group to $30/month. Also, new basic groups no longer have the event RSVP feature.
I used the one-month upgrade (rather than automatic continuation) to obtain Add Member capability for my PTA group last year. This was very convenient because we collect the vast majority of our members during school registration. I'll probably do likewise this year, but the increase does push it from being a no-brainer donation in kind on my part, into the consideration of "Hm, maybe I should ask the PTA to reimburse me" expense.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

  • INTERNAL: More work on the API and reviewing progress on the app.
  • CHANGE: Treat Trello descriptions as plain text, not Markdown.
  • CHANGE: Emailed login links are now valid for 60 minutes.
  • CHANGE: We no longer accept email from servers that do not have reverse DNS records.
  • BUGFIX: When sending a message to a member(s), use your sig if you've set one.
  • BUGFIX: Hashtags were sometimes not displayed when paging through the Topics list.
  • NEW: Delete Account button on the first account page, jumps to new FAQ item in Help.
  • INTERNAL: Changed some stats that we track.
Please call out any you find significant.

Re: are restricted groups available for the free version of Groups.io

pleo84103,

Are all of the above available with the free version of Groups.io
Short answer: yes.

The group we have in yahoo groups is restricted - by that I mean only
invited folks, and or approved folks who have sent to subscription
email if they know it
In both Yahoo Groups and Groups.io, if you know the group's name then you can create the group's subscription address. For Yahoo Groups it is just "-subscribe" appended to the group name in an email message; for Groups.io it is "+subscribe".

Also in both Yahoo Groups and Groups.io, a person may apply to join a restricted-membership group by clicking on a button on the group's home page (as an alternative to using the email command).

Yahoo Groups has a type of group, "Closed", which Groups.io does not: in Yahoo Groups a "closed" group does not show its home page to non-members and does not allow the subscribe email command - such groups are by invitation only.

Any member of the group may post
Yes.

With moderation capabilities similar to Yahoo Groups, but with the added ability to have a member automatically taken off moderation after a set number of approved postings.

The group is not visible (nor its archives) on the Yahoo Groups page.
As with Yahoo Groups, you can choose whether the Messages are public or members-only, but once you've made them members-only you cannot return them to public.

If your group's messages are public, then your group is listed in the Groups.io directory. Otherwise inclusion in the directory is optional.

So far I'm liking this new message editor.

Hi All,

As readers of beta@ may know, there's a test of a new message editor afoot, which users can volunteer to join. So if you're the sort of person who likes to puzzle out a new feature, acid test it, and report your findings, you might want to give it a spin.

I did, and am using it now.

This editor has many more features, and removes one of my pet peeves with the old one. This editor turns Enter into <br/> rather than </p><p>. That's a good thing when you used one of them and wanted a line break. I'm not so sure if it is a good thing when you used two intending them as a paragraph break. Those with some knowledge of HTML will understand what I'm talking about here. If you don't, that's ok. It is (probably) a small point.

It currently suffers one of the problems that (I think) got fixed in the old one: if your group "normalizes" HTML it nevertheless allows you to use and see in WYSIWYG formatting features that get stripped by normalization.

I've only used it for a few test messages so far, so I wouldn't say that I've given it anything like a good test. One of the fun things is an insert tool for special characters - ¦¸ is the button icon for it. ¡ú It is a limited set ¡û but has many of the more useful glyphs.

Gratuitous font change - the Lucida family is one I like. But this needs to be bumped up a bit to match the weight of the default (Helvetica Neue). Or, just to tweak the haters you can write in Comic Sans.

Look in the header of the two messages to see if their Message-ID: field has the same value.

If not, then the two messages were generated separately, and there's nothing Groups.io can do about that.

If they have the same Message-ID then one is a (mangled) copy of the other. And then the question becomes where and why that happened. I would trace the Received: fields to see where they diverged - before receipt by Groups.io or after.

> I looked at my group's settings and there is nothing out of the

I can't imagine how this could be a Groups.io problem. Some questions:

What email service did the member use?
What email interface (webmail, mobile app, PC client)?
Did both messages post to the group Messages section (unmoderated)?
?Or (moderated), did both messages appear in the Pending list?

I have seen messages get duplicated in transit, but usually that results in two identical copies (except for divergent Received fields). I don't think I've heard of a case where the copied message body was so different.

Re: Downloading the membership list

LeeAnne

To get a .CSV of Members.

go Home|Admin|Members

See in the main part of the screen a list of members which can be sorted by:

Display Name ??? Email ??? Delivery ??? Joined

Select which members you want by Checkbox on left. (looks like if left All Unchecked they all download.)?

Then click on the Download button up at the top of the screen: ? Member, Bulk Removal, Download.

A new window opens of /g/my-site/memberlist.csv.? Do a File|Save ;

or you could Select the contents,? Copy and then Paste into a spreadsheet or a text document.

OK,

Tony

Jules,

> begin inviting the members over to this new setup from the old group.

A disadvantage of what you're doing is that the content at Groups.io is
uploaded by, and hence owned by, you - rather than the member who
originally contributed it to your Yahoo group. That's not a problem if
the content was contributed to that group by you and/or other moderators
originally.

The Groups Transfer agent is able to copy all of the content of your
Yahoo Group for you, and it will preserve the linkage between the
content and the member who uploaded it.
/static/transfer

A disadvantage of having the transfer agent do it is that it copies the
memberships first (so that it can establish those linkages) and then the
content. Usually this presents no difficulty, but sometimes the transfer
takes a little while to complete, and eager members might start posting
and uploading immediately, getting new material mixed in with the
transferred material.

I think a solution to that is to use the group's Settings page to
prevent member contributions until after the transfer of content has
completed. That would be:

[_] Announcement Group (in Group Settings)

and then one of the "Only moderators" settings for each of the areas
under the Features section.

If you do this you should probably include that in your pre-transfer
announcement to your Yahoo Group members, so they understand why there's
a brief before the Groups.io posting and features are enabled for them
to contribute.

> The far left column I am disregarding as it counts the numbers of
> rows.

Note that those are not row numbers in the spreadsheet sense. They are
an ID (a sequence number or serial number) assigned to the row at its
creation - if you delete a row the other rows do not change number. If
you sort by a column the numbers sort with the rest of the row content.

> However, I need to adjust the 'actual width' of the left column of
> questions. Can someone please explain how this is done.

It does not appear that this can be done.

> To be specific the column is too narrow and the words don't wrap
> around properly for me.

The column content _should_ word wrap. I'm not sure why they don't for
you, it may be a browser issue. Or maybe something about the content of
cells (pasted non-break spaces instead of ordinary spaces?). In any
case, if no one else here in GMF has a suggestion this might be a
bug/issue to report to [email protected]. Tell them the name of the
group and the table, the browser you use, your OS and anything about how
you created the table that might be unusual.

> Thanks in advance, and I apologise in advance if this post is in the
> wrong place.

This is the perfect place to ask. In this case, since the feature you
want does not appear to exist, one place to look is on the Groups.io
to-do list:

And, since I don't see a relevant entry in the Database column there,
you can make a request for the feature (manual column width adjustment)
in the beta@ group:

Invitation shelf-life

I'm just setting up my group and using invitations instead of transfer from Yahoo to clean up the list. ?Do invitations expire and, if so, for how long are they valid?

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Barb,

Shal, this is fantastic! Is all of the information current?
Probably. Some of it might be "ahead of current" if there are revisions that Mark hasn't (yet) incorporated into the official help page.

If you spot anything that isn't current or isn't clear please correct it.

Can we copy and paste to use in the Wiki in our groups?
Yes, of course. But as with the official help page itself (which has handy permalinks on sections) the stuff in the Mockup is publicly readable, so you can also link to it rather than copy.

Subscription change by e-mail

John

Hi,

Newbie here just in process of setting up groups.io and putting together some guidelines for members.

In yahoogroups, members can change subscription type without logging in by sending e-mail to address like groupname-digest@...

I cannot find any documentation on the equivalent feature in groups.io but by a bit of experimentation, I have found that [email protected] and [email protected] work.

Can anybody point me at a full list of all e-mail commands ?

Cheers

John
