Please note the distinction between the Members list and the Directory. The former is under the Admin section and is used to edit permissions, subscription info and to send private communications. The latter is a semi-public place to identify group members and share profile information.
This may be obvious to you but perhaps not to your friend in Germany. It is frequent source of confusion in discussions of this nature.
