I suspect Mark is reluctant to act further out of concern about receiving a flurry of irate/overstated messages from group owners ("The system removed all my subscribers!"). That's only a guess, though.
I would love it if they were removed automatically. It artificially inflates my group size (not GMF, another group where I am a co-owner). My impression was that we shouldn't remove them.
