Technically, if you own the main group, you are, by default, owner of all subgroups.
How do I change the owner of the group to the new subcommittee chair (who is in the subgroup) so that I can remove the old one who is currently the sole owner and thus can't be removed?
Just edit the member record of the person you want to make the new owner and change their role to Owner. Then edit the one that is currently the owner and change their role to Member.
