Jeff,

What Malcolm and Frances said: the subgroups operate as independent groups, except that each subgroup member must also be a member of the primary group. Messages posted only to one do not post to the other.

So the messages a subgroup member receives will depend on their subscription settings in each of the subgroup and the primary group.
