It seems obvious that GIO is not changing it, so this must be happening with their email client. Have those who are experiencing this problem check their client settings to see if there is something that would affect it. If they aren't savvy enough to do so, let us know what client/OS they are using and maybe we can look it up.

Is it possible that the original file names are using an n-dash or m-dash typographical character instead of a hyphen? This might cause a problem depending on whether the message is sent as plain text versus HTML.
