New Member Introduction
Hello, This is to introduce myself as a new member of the Gemini Users Yahoo Group. My name is Charles Criss. I'm apparently the fourth person to join. I live in the Dallas, TX area. At this time, I have had my Gemini System for about a week, so I'm still learning how to use it. I have installed my Gemini as a retrofit to my G-11. I have an 11' Celestron SCT and an SBIG ST-237 camera. The software I use is The Sky, CCDSoft, Maxim/DL CCD, Photoshop and Picture Window. I am looking forward to participating, hopefully learning and if possible contributing. Charles Criss

Introducing myself
Hello, I'm René G?rlich. I've partially developed the Gemini system and I've written the software for the main CPU of the Gemini. I'm working in Computer Sciences and am an amateur astronomer located in Germany. I'm still maintaining and integrating new features into the Gemini software. I've a website at http://www.DocGoerlich.com describing the state of the software, the serial command sets, known bugs and containing the latest manuals and the Gemini FAQ. I'll answer questions regarding the Gemini in this Yahoogroup as well in the Losmandy_users group. Please be patient, I tend to be rather busy and I get plenty of emails every day... Clear skies, René

Gemini Control V1.02
Dear group, I've uploaded a new version of the PC/Windows(R) Gemini Control program (V1.02) to my website http://www.DocGoerlich.com . Some users emailed me about problems starting up the program, let me know if this version works for you now. I also got some questions about the possibility to download Gemini's internal databases to set up own observing programs with Level 2. Downloading the databases is not implemented, but I've added all the internal databases in Gemini User Catalog (.gcf) file format for download from my website. Another new feature in GC V1.02 is the possibility to delete Gemini's observing log. Clear skies, René

New user but been monitoring.
Hello, I have had my gemini since April fools 2001. It took six long months to arrive with my newly ordered G11. When it did I was very pleased with the whole setup. Very good quality manufacturing. Rene' has been very helpful as has Scott when asked. I have been somewhat limited in using the new equipment due to both weather and work on remodeling my new home but when I do get to use it it is a pleasure. I look forward to someday adding on a permanent observatory. This will provide the ability to do more robotic control of ccd imageing. My profile tells a bit more about me for those interested. thank you, Don Lewis alias: bubba_On_wye_mtn

Gemini Control news
Dear group, I've uploaded the latest version (1.03) of the Gemini Control program for Windows(R) to my website http://www.docgoerlich.com . It should take care of the "division by zero" loop mentioned by Jimmy Thibert and has an improved handling of the color schemes. More good news: the Gemini Control Program is now also available for PDAs. Here's what the developer, my son Daniel writes: --- GeminiControl PDA works with all PDAs running Windows CE 3.0 or later - this also includes Pocket PC 2002. It requires a screen size of either 640x200 pixels (Handheld PC) or 240x320 (Palm-Size PC and Pocket PC). Other devices such as Handheld PC Pro and Pen Tablets are not supported at the moment, but we'll start working on versions for those devices when enough people request it. Gemini works on ARM, MIPS and SH3 processor architectures. It should also work with SH4 but has not been tested with it. Actually, GeminiControl has been tested successfully with the following devices, but again should work with all Windows CE 3.0 and P/PC 2002 devices: * HP Jornada 720 * HP Jornada 420 * Compaq iPAQ 3600 Series * Casio Cassiopeia E-115G * Casio Cassiopeia E-125G * Casio Cassiopeia EM-500G GeminiControl PDA is not available for Palm OS, Embedded Linux and Symbian Devices yet. If there are enough people interested, we'll probably start supporting those operating systems. --- More info and some pictures are at http://www.docgoerlich.com/Daniel/Eingang/EnterGemini.html . Daniel asks $25 for the program. If you are interested, please contact him mailto:daniel.goerlich@... . Daniel set up a new Yahoo group "Gemini_Users": http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Gemini_Users . I monitor both Losmandy_users and Gemini_Users, but please use the Gemini_Users group for all questions regarding the Gemini Control program for PC and PDA. René

New member/New G-11 Gemini 3
Hi. Just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I just purchased a new Losmandy G-11 w/ Gemini GOTO. I'm not even sure of the version yet as it didn't come with a manual and no motor cables were included (so I don't want to power it up yet). That's all being handled and I should be up and running in a week or so. It's so nice to see all this internet support from users and designers. I look forward to sharing information and learning with all of you. Happy Holidays, Randy Johnson Eugene, Oregon (Still raining) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Trial-version for PDAs
Hi folks, in order to let you all take a look at the Gemini for PDA software, I have compiled trial versions that behave exactly like the full version, except for one major handicap: They cannot connect to the Gemini device. This way, you can check if the software runs on your PDA, and you can take a first look at it before devicing whether to buy or not. The software has been tested with the devices listed below. Even if you decide not to buy, but own a device not listed, please tell me if the program works well. * HP Jornada 720 * HP Jornada 420 * Compaq iPAQ 3600 Series * Casio Cassiopeia E-115G * Casio Cassiopeia E-125G * Casio Cassiopeia EM-500G Please download the one you need, but make sure you load the correct file: On Windows CE, a program is not compiled for a special device or platform, but for a specific processor type. Trial versions are available for the three most common processor architectures, ARM/StrongARM, MIPS, SH3/SHx. Check the system information applet on the Windows control panel of your device to determine its processor type. You can then download the appropriate file, each 60-70 kB small: * http://www.docgoerlich.de/Daniel/GeminiARM.exe * http://www.docgoerlich.de/Daniel/GeminiMIPS.exe * http://www.docgoerlich.de/Daniel/GeminiSH3.exe For more information, send me an e-mail ! Gemini/ G11 Motor Stall Problem
I have a Takahashi FS102 mounted on a G11/Gemini. It seems to be well balanced but frequently stalls on slewing (usually in RA). I have tried to adjust the slew speed by changing the "all speeds" setting to "visible" but that does not seem to slow it down or alter the frequency of stalling. I am not aware of any other mechanism to adjust slew rate for manual or slewing under the control of astronomy software (the Sky level 4). I there anything I can do to correct the problem other than complain to Scott Losmandy ? Sincerely, Wayne Hollenbeck

New Kid
Hello All: I was visiting the 'Gemini' page and viewed this group formed recently and so signed up. My name is Kirk M. Rogers from Portland, Maine and have been a Gemini user since the early days (I have saved Gemini related emails in file dating back to November 2000). First with a G11 retrofit kit and now with the new version MI-250 Goto. I still have both mounts but use the G11 manually and only as a spare (the MI-250 is a phenominal mount). Rene' and I have corresponded many times and I have had many Gemini adventures.... I installed the Level 2 EPROM purchased from Rene' several months ago and use the deluxe hand controller. I have found this system to be superb in my astrophotography pursuit. Rene' and Daniel, thanks for making this forum available, a truly excellent idea that should prove most useful. I'll read back through all the correspondence over the weekend. Kirk

cables connecting gemini with motor drives 2
Hi all, don't know if anyone else ever has problems, but I noticed the 2 cables I got to connect to the RA and DEC drives were not made correctly. The person that made them had failed to crimp the rj45 connector far enough resulting in bad connections. This caused my drive to behave erratically and miss targets completely. After I used my own RJ45 crimptool on it, things were fixed. Im not sure if they come with the gemini or were added by the reseller, but whoever did it, their quality control was below par. Regards, Cor Bosman

Safety limit operation 2
Hi Rene: I am wondering how the safety limit system works. Does it take a combination of the RA and Dec coordinates or just RA? Also, does it store more than the full east and west limits? It occurs to me that a 360 deg horizon line should be able to be described to prevent collisions. This horizon line doesn't neccessarily describe the actual horizon, but the limits of mechanical non-interaction of the particular setup (scope, camera, etc.) as it is swung through its usable range. For example, as the scope is swung through the RA axis, say at zenith where there would theoretically be no RA limit, there could be variations in the Dec horizon angle as to cause the scope to "move around" in Dec to avoid the collision/obstruction. Am I making sense? Does it work this way or some other way? Ev Southwick

Gemini/G11 Motor Still Stalls 6
I have adjusted the Gemini/G11 "slew" and "go to " rates from 1200 to 800 and I am still experiencing stalls in RA. The Tak FS102 is well balanced and I have tried various clutch tightness settings. I have had this problem since I bought the mount and I am starting to suspect that the motors just are not up to to task. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you, Wayne Hollenbeck wrhollen@...

Unable to control G11/Gemini via DeepSky 2000 and ACP 5
I have been trying to control the Gemini via programs such as Deepsky and ACP. Both of these support a "generic LX200" driver, which I chose when configuring these programs. I had limited results communicating with the Gemini. Most often the software would time out waiting for a reply from the Gemini. The best I was able to manage was to read the current position of the G- 11 via Gemini. Rene, have you tried any of the popular astronomy programs that offer telescope control? If so, which ones? Kevin
