North Dec button not working 19
Group, In the past couple of days, the north Dec button on my 14 year old GM8 hand controller has stopped working. The attachment shows the type of HC I have. Pressing the north button alone does nothing in sidereal mode. It also seems not to do anything when in menu mode to scroll through the options in reverse. The south button is working but I can’t put it in fast slew mode by tapping the north button. I would think there might be a failure of the physical button but if I hit DEV REV then the north button now works (moving it south) but the south button no longer works. Anyone know what could be going on? Is there some obscure setting in the Gemini L4 command set that I’ve accidentally enabled that says “don’t move north”? ? -- Bill Tschumy Otherwise -- Longmont, CO www.otherwise.com

Gemini 1 Site information 3
Hi All Is it possible to rename and reconfigure the sites stored in "Site Information"? I have updated the "Hollywood" coordinates to my home coordinates but it now just shows as "User Site" The remaining 3 preset sites are less than useless so I'd like to update them with site info that I can use. -- Thanks and Best Regards Neil

Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7 4
Hi Folks, There appears to be some compatibility issue with Platform 7 ASCOM Chooser and Gemini.NET ASCOM driver. The chooser refuses to select Gemini driver. Any existing apps that are already configured to connect to Gemini.NET will continue to work fine, but if you need to set up a new connection from a new app where ASCOM chooser is involved, this is likely to fail. I've asked the ASCOM Platform team for help. For now, I'd recommend that you remain on Platform 6 and don't upgrade to Platform 7 until this is resolved. Regards, -Paul

Servo motor optical encoder replacement 10
Hello Group, I have a problem with a runaway SVM-HT motor on my Gemini 1 L4 G11 mount. Basically when I turn on the Gemini, the motor just runs away at full slew speed. It got very close to disaster once... I've done the usual fault finding by swapping cables and servos, battery voltage, cmos reset etc. It all boils down to the optical encoder device in the servo unit itself. Luckily they are only plugged into a socket on the servo board and I was able to swap the device between the RA and DEC motors. The fault followed the sensor, so I am certain that this is where the fault lies. I also managed to incorrectly insert the RA cable into the Gemini a little while back (that's an "interesting" design choice, btw, lol), so I suspect I damaged the sensor electronics in the process. So my question is: Where to get a replacement sensor in the UK? The part is labelled US Digital - EM1-1-250-N. It comes up on internet searches, but only seems to be available in bulk orders. Although, TBH, I've not reached out to any of these large suppliers yet. Are these available in the UK, or even Europe, in single quantities? Repair would certainly be a lot less expensive than buying a whole new servo... TIA Paul

Plywood shelf on tripod
I was reading Hooking up a Gemini-1 to your PC or Laptop for GoTo and Autoguiding pdf. The mount setup shown had shelf and I’m asking if there is a drawing other dyi information available? Or other designs. Thanks, Eugene

Gemini Motor Mounting Damage? 7
Hi, A bit of background first: I have a very old, but faithful, Losmandy G11. I upgraded to Gemini 2 about a year ago. Last night I had been successfully autoguiding with PHD2 for a few hours. After midnight I executed a go-to to an object in Cassiopeia. It was nearly overhead. The mount head collided with the RA motor! I have NEVER had this happen in many many years of using my G11. I decided to re-align and did several go-to's to rebuild the model. All seemed fine. Slewing seemed fine. I started autoguiding with PHD2 and RA guiding immediatley went off the chart. I checked cabling - OK. I unplugged and replugged the RA cable - OK. I slewed the RA several times and it seemed fine. I started PH2 again and RA guiding went off the chart. Ugh. This morning I visually checked the RA motor and housing - it looks ok. The mounting seems fine and tight. I have not taken the RA motor off the mount yet. I have the feeling that since it slews ok, I won't be able to see anything wrong. I greatly would appreciate any suggestions before pulling the motor off. Thanks!

DIGITAL DRIVE SYSTEM 6
Hello everyone. I had the opportunity to get a G-11 Losmandy and with the accessories it had, there is this mechanism that I have no idea how to use. If there is any manual or instructions, I would appreciate it if you tell me how to locate it or download it from the internet. Preferably in Spanish. Thank you all

GeminiTelescope Solar System catalog seems to be empty 4
If I open the Object Catalog manager and select the Solar System catalog, no objects are shown. This is true in 1.1.25 and 1.1.28 Should be easy to fix I expect. David

GeminiTelescope can't change location fields 2
I just installed 1.1.28 and went into Setup to change the location (I have move to a new house). The fields for latitude and longitude would let me position the cursor in them but I couldn't change the values? What am I missing (no the telescope's not connected). ** UPDATE Never mind - when I connected the 'scope I was able to adjust them David

Help needed re: connecting Gemini 2 to PC 8
Hello group, Recently my trusty old Gemini I shot craps after 19 yrs of faithful service. I had to upgrade to the new Gemini 2 and Hand Controller. As you know, the old Gemini I connected to a PC via a Serial/R12 connector cable which plugged in to one of the RJ 12 sockets on the control box. This does not work on the new Gemini 2. I decided I want to connect via an ethernet cable (Cat 5) directly from the Gemini 2 to the ethernet port on my PC. I have now installed this. My question is: Now that I have the connection, what are my next steps to make it operational so that I can use programs like The Sky 6 and N.I.N.A. to run my mount? I am a Newbie to Gemini 2, so any assistance you experienced Gemini 2 users can give me will be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Ron Abbott

Problem with my Gemini 1 5
Hello group, When I boot up, it shows DEC motor stalled, but the DEC axis very slowly rotates but fast enough to easily see without pressing any buttons. Pressing any buttons at this point does nothing. I swapped cables same thing. If I plug RA into DEC port, the RA axis rotates slowly. Anything I can try? Thanks, John

Need advice on strange guiding problem 9
Group, I have been trying to use a 14 year old GM8 mount (non-spring loaded worms; non-tucked motors) for variable star analysis. For this analysis, it is not essential that guiding is perfect, but I’d like to get it better than I’m currently achieving. This is with a small refractor of 740mm focal length. The crux of the issue is that guiding in Dec seems to be reasonable (say 0.3 RMS”) but RA guiding is significantly worse (say 1.5 RMS”). I’ve attached a screen shot showing what the RA guiding looks like (blue is Dec; green is RA). I am using KStars/Ekos for imaging and guiding but I get similar results if I use PhD. The RA seems to bounce around somewhat chaotically. I do have pretty bad seeing where I’m located, but the fact that the Dec doesn’ bouce around as much indicates this in more than bad seeing. I have been working on this problem off and on for some time. I have tried. 1. Stripping the mount and completely cleaning/relubbing it 2 or 3 times 2. Swapped the worm and worm blocks between RA and Dec axes 3. Swapped the gear boxes between RA and Dec axes 4. Swapped the motors between RA and Dec axes 5. Shimmed the RA gear box to correct a slight misalignment at the Oldham coupler 6. Tried lubricating the Oldham coupler 7. Shifted the counterweight around to make it East heavy and East light 8. Tried a different power supply None of this has made a significant difference. I still get poorer guiding in RA. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on and how I might fix this? Thanks, Bill -- Bill Tschumy Otherwise -- Longmont, CO www.otherwise.com

Info Mount Losmandy height adjustment 10
Hi, I wanted to ask a question but more of a curiosity.... I noticed that Losmandy mounts up to about 2005/2008 had one of the two screws with two washers, which in current mounts for example are no longer present i.e. there is only one for each screw. What was the purpose of the two washers, just to identify it from the top adjusting one or as a special shim and if so, what were they used for over the years? I enclose a photo of a not recent Losmandy G11 taken from the Internet for better understanding.

G11 upgrades (bought 2019) 11
Hello everybody I am getting back into astrophotography and have been doing some research on available upgrades / updates to the Losmandy G11 Gemini 2 mount. Since I bought mine in 2019 it appears there have been a few upgrades. What I could find: Firmware upgrade to L6 (requires a PIC programmer?) Motor upgrade to Servo motors? A few open questions for which I could not find an answer to: Are there any more updates / upgrades? Is it possible to do the L6 upgrade on linux with a own PIC programmer? If yes how? How can I check which motors I have installed in my G11 and where could I buy a motor upgrade kit (central europe)? Thanks :)

Catching up: Losmandy/ Gemini I and PEC 7
I'm catching up with twenty years of experience regarding PEC and Gemini I. I've read Losmandy/ Gemini I doesn't play well with PEC because of the non-integer gear reduction in the stock Losmandy gear boxes. Did that used to be true? Is it still true? Do the new gear boxes Losmandy sells have integer reductions, or are the McLennen gear boxes still useful mods? Does PEMPro deal with non-integer reductions smoothly? Does Gemini I support PEC programming using a 2x worm cycle, or is that for Gemini II only? I'd rather not train my mount (go-to MI-250 w/ Gemini I) the old fashioned way, so I'm interested in changes and advances which have happened while I've been using eye pieces.

RS-232 interface IC and RS-232 port replacement part numbers? 14
Hi everyone, It looks like I have a dead RS-232 chip and I'm planning to replace it. For some details on this, my 2007-vintage Gemini-1 G11 started acting up a few days ago. It intermittently stopped responding correctly to slews commanded through the ASCOM driver, got worse over the night, and now has issues even connecting through the RS-232 port. I first tried different cables, then computers, USB-to-Serial adapters, swapped the battery, cleaned the RS-232 port's pins, etc. When I can get it connected to a computer, it will respond to ASCOM driver hand controller movements, but will not accept any slews to RA/Dec. Per the Gemini-2.net Gemini 1 FAQ, I tested the voltage across C21 and it shows near 0 (even immediately after waking it up by requesting GPS coordinates). Voltage across C19 is 5.0. Seems like a textbook failure. This recent thread mentioned a current part number for the replacement IC: /g/Losmandy_users/topic/rs_232_port_damaged/106474176 Is the MAX3226EEAE+ still the best SMC to use as a replacement? https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Analog-Devices-Maxim-Integrated/MAX3226EEAE%2b?qs=1THa7WoU59EroIdxsq5Y%2FQ%3D%3D Also, I'm thinking of replacing the RS-232 port at the same time. It seems to be working fine, but there is a little corrosion that I couldn't clean up. Does anyone have a good part number for that? Thanks for the help, Bryan

Part number for L1 in Gemini-1 47uH 2
The schematic specifies 47uH, 0.7A. It’s about 6mm square with a round bobbin. Could it be Bourns SDR0604-470KL? Thanks David

DSCs with tracking 3
Hi everyone, Would anyone recommend a DSC system, perhaps Nexus, that would work with Losmandy drive motors? I think I might prefer that to Gemini 1 go-to. Is one in better touch with finding objects, as I always had with star hopping, than go-to. Mark Whittier, CA

Worm phase changed, Gemini I L4 4
I'm working to get PEC set up and working properly for my MI-250/ Gemini I L4. Ray G. is providing tech support in the PEMPro forum, here's part of one of his posts: "It's probably best to ask on the Gemini forum, but if there is no sensor, then the Gemini would have to keep track of the last PEC index position when powered off and then restored. If the mount's PEC phase changes, it will no longer match the PEC curve uploaded to the mount, which could make PEC less effective or even worse than having PEC disabled." I've skimmed through the past couple of years of PEC posts in this forum and didn't see an answer to the specific question I have: what can cause the worm phase to change between different nights (mine shifted by ~24s)? Is there any way to "bring it back" (such as simply reloading the PEC curve I generated on July 20), or do I need to bite the bullet and make a new PEC run and load a new curve? Just to check my understanding, these are the things I can think of or have read about which would change PE (assuming you don't actually change one or both gears): Damage to the gear train Disengaging the worm/ worm wheel such that the worm meshes in a different place on the worm wheel Dirt or grit getting into the gear train If the mount/ controller has worm sensors, a malfunction of the sensor A firmware problem in the controller ...and problems other than changing PE: Bad communication between the controller and computer (so bad comms between Gemini and PEMPro), double check your RS-232/USB cable
