Re: GPS for Gemini 1

Hi Brendan
Thanks for the info.
The GPS is a Globalsat BR305.
By examining the USB adapter it came with, I managed to determine which pin on the PS2 connector is +5v. Strangely(I thought) there is -5v on an adjacent pin, but not sure if this is actually used as it's not in the spec.
(Btw, I don't want to use the USB o/p via a laptop, as my usage across my 2 mounts does not justify that)
I might try a power up with +5v and ground only....?

Thanks
S

I mean it could use +/-12v rs232 not 5V or even 3V. Though I doubt it. It might have a buffer IC driver
which protects things like cross connection

If it does generally getting Rx/Tx cross wired shouldn¡¯t cause an issue. But no one knows if it had a buffer IC. Aldo you may need to set it to 4800bps for a G1

You may need an usb/rs232 breakout to connect to the GPS and update it¡¯s setting for 4800 bps etc.

What GPS is it? Some info . For Geminis

Get back on GPS type so we can better help

GPS for Gemini 1

Hi There,
I'm replacing my GPS unit because the old one suffers from the GPS rollover issue.
However, the PS2 connector is wired differently on my replacement unit, but I still wish to use the 4 pin DIN/ RJ11 lead from the original unit.
I have had a look at the pinout diagrams in the Losmandy manual, so that side of things is fine, and I know where the +5v should go towards the new unit.

My question: I'm not absolutely certain which pin is Rx and which is Tx on the new unit........if I connect up and they are the wrong way round, is there any risk of damage to the GPS
or Gemini? If its just a case that they wont communicate if incorrect, I'll give it a try, otherwise.....not!

Thanks

Simon

Re: Gemini 2 for sale

Good evening,

Have you sold your Gemini 2? Is the hand controller included? I may be interested.

Years ago I published this document about making a Gemini GPS from an inexpensive GPS module. ?My unit is still in operation on my Gemini 1 after all this time. ?Hope it helps.

Re: GPS for Gemini 1

I've miss connected Rx/Tx ...it shouldn't cause any problems.? But that was different chipsets!?? You can use the mini USB and import GPS data thru Gemini ASCOM...FWIW

Re: GPS for Gemini 1

Thanks.? I had the power pins down.? It was the Tx and Rx pins I was not sure of.? I know I have a fifty fifty chance of getting it right.? But like I always say a fifty fifty chance of being right means you have an 80% chance of being wrong.? Seems to work that way

Have a look at the Garmin site see pdf here, page3?

This identity¡¯s the data pins and power pins.? Buy a comparable connector off fleabay and wire the power to a source (sorry it doesn¡¯t identify if the power is 12v or 5V) and the RJ-22 data pins appropriate as per Gemini 1 manual and garmin data sheet.?

Brown is Garmin data Tx out so it goes to the Gemini 1, RJ-22 Rx in

White is Garmin data in and connects to Gemini 1, RJ-22 Tx out

The Gemini 1 manual identify which pin Rx and Tx ?

Re: GPS for Gemini 1

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the GPS (Garmin GPS 72/73 to an RJ22 male connector (4P4C)???

Re: Power cable

Yep understood cheers Ted. ?Soldering these pins are a pain. ?I drill the rear cups out to maximum I can ?so the wires fit better.?

Still it¡¯s a battle?

Cheers gents?

Re: Power cable

Brendan, Paul K is correct. Two power cables for the Gemini 1. Sorry for the ambiguity. I understand that the diagram shows the inputs on the Gemini 1 CPU and not the power cable end and the cable end is the mirror of the diagram. As if I needed another challenge, the wire colors on the spare cable are reversed - red is ground, black is voltage.?

Thank you both for clarifying.

I think Ted meant he has 2 power cables for Gemini-1 :)

Re: Power cable

Actually I just twigged you said Gemini 2! ? Are you sure? ? ?This image included in this thread is for a Gemini 1, 4 pin DIN power socket. ?

Yet you said you have two power two rerun GND.?

Re: Power cable

Ted

the above image is showing the power pins as looking at the power socket, not the plug!

Looking at the plug (front), the pins are mirrored! ? Take that into consideration.?

Re: Power cable

I have 2 Gemini power cables. One I have used for years, the other didn't seem to work. I ran across it recently and decided to rehab it. Referring to Paul K's diagram, the known good cable has the ground on the two left pins... the spare has the ground on the right two pins as shown in the diagram. I have to go with the known good cable config and resolder the wires on the spare cable's 12V power supply connector so that the pinouts? match the config of the known good cable. I have to challenge that pinout diagram unless someone can explain this contradiction to me. Thanks.??
