Comet tracking with new ASCOM driver and Gemini L5/6
Folks,?
The latest beta of the Gemini ASCOM driver includes a feature to automatically retrieve an object (comet, planet, satellite, etc.) ephemeris and to be able to find the object with a Goto, and then track it using both, RA and DEC axis tracking with speeds that are constantly adjusted. This was first developed for L6 using variable axis rates feature in that version, but I've just published a version that will use L5 comet tracking rates when L5 is detected. If you're watching the comet or trying to image it, give this a try (beta v1.1.16): Basic instructions: 1. Start the driver, connect to the mount as usual. You'll need internet connection for the initial object location/ephemeris download, but not after that 2. From driver Hand Controller Func menu select Small & Solar System objects... 3. In the window that pops up, enter the name of the comet (C/2022 E3). You'll see a bunch of comet information populate below -- this means the internet portion is completed. 4. Click on the Goto button (that'll slew to the comet's current position). If you already have it centered, then no need to do a Goto. You can reposition the comet in the FOV, as desired. 5. Press Start Track -- this will use JPL/Horizons ephemeris for the comet to constantly update the DEC and RA tracking rates to match comet movement 6. You can close the Small Objects window now, it'll continue to track the comet for as long as you're connected to the mount.? 7. To stop tracking and return to Sidereal rate, just press Stop button in the Small objects window 8. Don't check 'Auto-correct' option -- it'll interfere with any guiding commands, if you're autoguiding. If doing visual or video, then give it a try if the comet drifts without it. Again, shouldn't be needed. Please report any issues/problems, and I may need to get your ASCOM log file if you do. Regards, ? ?-Paul |
Thanks Paul, this is a fantastic update for L5 On Thu, Feb 2, 2023 at 8:42 PM Paul Kanevsky <yh@...> wrote:

Good Morning Paul,
I've been at this comet as the weather affords me since Jan 21st. I have only one question on the installation of this feature. In Step 1, connecting to the internet. I have only done this once or twice since buying this G2 system. Can you provide a quick explanation of how to do it? I know it's probably WIFI related, but I'm not sure how to do it. Been quite a long time ago...Would appreciate it. Thanks, Rodney] |
Rod this is just your computer connected to the Internet. It needs to access the horizons online database Does that answer your question? On Fri, Feb 3, 2023 at 9:14 AM Rod Bell <rock73rb@...> wrote: Good Morning Paul, Brian? Brian Valente astro portfolio? portfolio astrobin? --

In addition, you can cache the ephemeris data on your PC without Gemini, in preparation for an observing/imaging session. Open the ASCOM driver (no need to connect to Gemini), go to Func->Small and Solar System Objects menu, then enter the name of the object (C/2022 E3 for example) you want to cache. Once it's selected, the data for the next 24 hours will be automatically saved on your hard disk, and you can later use it without internet access at the telescope. The last downloaded object will be automatically opened next time you open the SSSO window, as long as you use it within 24 hours since the download. You can search for more than one object, all will be automatically cached. If you cache multiple objects, you can switch between them later, at the scope. Just click From File... button to see the list of what was cached, and to pick a different object. Regards, ? ?-Paul |
Sorry, I was tied up outside with the comet tonight.. So I just hard wire directly from the G2 hand controller to the modem then, or to my computer I should say, since it uses WIFI....
Think that's what I did with the guy that did the software way back. Really nice guy from CA who called me one Sunday back in 2018. He sadly passed away a few years ago. Can't remember his name, but anyway, he helped me with the firmware on the HC...I seem to remember doing it that way.. Thanks! Rod |
Hi Rod you only need your computer connected to the Internet, not the Gemini. You can leave your Gemini connected to your computer via USB or other method I think you are referring to Tom Hilton, who was a great help to many and passed away a few years ago On Fri, Feb 3, 2023 at 8:47 PM Rod Bell <rock73rb@...> wrote: Sorry, I was tied up outside with the comet tonight..
