Eyes can't cope with the contrast, especially as you age.

Aim to get the lowest light level which will let you see comfortably,
and as evenly spread as possible. More and smaller lights
strategically
placed work best. These days you could probably do it with LED
fittings.
You are aiming to get rid of the black areas, not make the bright ones
brighter.

And it can also reduce the electricity bill.
