Re: IRWELL TRANCEIVER
Love your YouTube chan Greg and I am now a subcriber!
I spent many many happy hours listening to SW radio in the 70s and 80s and still have my collection of QSL cards. Just watched your video on the shortwave active loop antenna which is great. I have completed a set of PCB's for the "Wellgood" loop antenna produced by George Smart, if you have not seen his loop article it is a clone of the "Wellbrook" loop electronics but I have yet to box everything up or source a suitable loop to complete the project but I hope to use it for general HF and shortwave listening. Regards Andy |

Re: IRWELL TRANCEIVER
A lot of my work so far is on scribbled notes and rather untidy but I am currently trying to produce images and schematics that are worthy of sharing with the group, as a matter of fact I have this evening posted some information on the H-Mode mixers in my files section.
More information will become available as soon as time permits and I appreciate peoples patience and willingness to remain members of the group possibly in the hope of the Irwell project! My enthusiasm with the project remains high and I can see light at the end of the tunnel but sometimes real life problems do not allow me to spend time on the project or hobby, in June of this year I lost my Mother In-law to bowel cancer and my father is currently terminally ill with Mesothelioma lung cancer, these things are an unwelcome fact of life and I digress... I will post a block diagram once I arrive at a stage where I am not changing or adding further modules. Regards Andy |

Re: IRWELL TRANCEIVER
Hi Greg
Thanks for your interest in the project, I have added you to my list of those possibly interested in PCB's or kits and these will be made available to those who register an interest first. I agree on your thoughts regards SMD, I was personally against the technology for some time but now I have embraced it I have not looked back! Regards beta builds I again agree, currently the project is being followed and built by another member of the group but I will consider making a couple of sets of PCB's available to other enthusiastic builders who are prepared to build test and where necessary make modifications and changes to further enhance and develop the project. For now kind regards Andy |

Re: IRWELL TRANCEIVER
I'm interested in a new (relatively) high quality hardware defined (non SDR) transceiver project. I would be interested in a kit of the hard-to-gets. Even when designers are careful to select readily available components in their country of origin, they can turn out to be unobtanium elsewhere.? In RF-sensitive modules like gain stages and PAs, this can render the module un-buildable.? So if there are group buys of inductors, filters, balun cores, certain ICs, that would suit me best.? ?
> ?release a few Beta versions to a select few to build up so as to find the bugs.?Then when all the test builds come up with perfectly running rigs , then go to some sort of large release or boards or kits. Agree 100%. As amazing at the uBitx project is, it seemed to me to go from bench prototype to full scale production, generating a lot of noise when the filtering and board layout was found to be not as good as it could have been. A 6 month beta might have caught this, and the mod developed before it sold thousands of units.? 73, thanks Andy for your work on keeping homebrew transceiver projects alive, the modules so far look excellent. I'm a little late to the party but the little bit I have seen of the IRWELL looks very interesting. Is there an overall block diagram or anything that describes the architecture of the rig? I searched the files section for "IRWELL" but did not find anything like that.
Thanks and 73, W0PWE |

Hi there Andy , thanks for the reply.
Regarding SMD , Hams really should get on board ,, so to speak. :-) It is easier and faster than through hole mounting. I place my parts on the board with a dab of SMD solder paste , and cook the board up in a fry pan (its actually a cast iron skillet) on the kitchen stove. I keep an eye on the temperature of the PCB with one of those infrared gun type laser things , and keep the solder at melting point for 20 or so seconds , then shut off the heat A few seconds after the solder has solidified I take the board out of the pan and let it cool down. It gives perfect - PROFESSIONAL - results every time. With that being said , I am not anti through hole , I like both , but for different reasons. For me a full kit is not so important if a partial kit is available ,, things like ferrites + a PCB , and perhaps a few other things that are not easily to come by would be handy. A full kit would be attractive IF the total cost wasn't insane. While I see the advantage of building , its hard to justify some of the costs of kits kicking around today - and then you must go and build it.... Whatever the eventually , I think its best not to rush things just to get a kit out. When your nearly at the final design and before ordering a large batch of anything , , I recommend that you release a few Beta versions to a select few to build up so as to find the bugs. Then when all the test builds come up with perfectly running rigs , then go to some sort of large release or boards or kits. gregW:-)? OH2FFY |
