High noise floor in receive. Stuck relay or other fault? 2
Hi all, I have a an 857d that has been exhibiting a couple of strange symptoms. First it seems that perhaps some relay keeps getting stuck, as after some amount of normal operation (primarily cw or digital modes) the unit starts to get and stay hot in receive. It seems to be drawing about 200ma additional when this happens. This also seems to be coupled with an increase in receiver noise on most (but not all) bands. It's most obvious on 17m and 15 m. Power cycling the radio seems frequently get it out of this state but not always, as does running the relay cleaning process. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms before? Thanks, Greg N1TR

FT8CN 6
Anyone got an FT857D working with FT8CN using the CAT port. I've got the decoding working fine and can get TX going but there is no power out. Ive followed the FT8CN instructions. I think it may be an audio in issue, ALC perhaps? I only get one USB port opening in FT8CN when I start it. If you have it working then your settings on the FT857D and in FT8CN would be great. -- Compton VK2HRX Sydney, Australia

Gauging interest- custom remote head mount for 2019-current RAV4 owners 6
Hi All, I found this 3d printable file for a custom remote head mount in 2019-Current RAV4s and am planning to modify it for an 857. FT-757GX display
? know, wrong group, this is the closest I can find. I have a friend at a radio club in the small town of Olavarria, Argentina, who has an FT-757GX (not the "ii" model) with a failed display. Anyone know where I can find a replacement display, new or used/serviceable? If not that, a CAT display? 73, K1CPR Juan

FT-857D Memory Groups 2
Somehow my Memory Groups stopped working. A long press on the select knob would bring up the pressed indicator on the screen but turning the knob did nothing. The memory group did not change. Was able to locate this on Eham from 2004. Hope it helps someone else. ¡°To set up memory groups you must hold down the FUNC button to enter the memory settings. Then turn menu option 55 to ON. Then, so you can change banks set menu option 57 to MHz/MEM GRP. You will notice now in memory mode instead of for example M-001 it will be Ma-01. When you set memories now you have the choice of banks a-j with 20 memories in each. In memory mode when you want to change banks, just press the select button in and turn it to the desired bank. Hope this helps.¡± Menu item 57 got changed somehow and now everything works as it should.

PTT not activating
I attempted to repair a failed in-line fuse for the ACC port and it appeared to have succeeded, however, the radio now will not respond to the PTT button being pressed on the microphone. The MH-59 microphone illuminates the DTMF LED when the PTT is pressed but no signal is generated. The radio otherwise continues to receive correctly, change frequencies and other settings, etc. I am wondering if I may have damaged something in the area of the in-line fuse that would be affecting the PTT function. Any ideas? 73 Jerry AG7IK

Another buttons issue, and no audio 7
Hi All, - I've read through all the buttons related questions I can find. My issue doesn't quite match any of them - No, it's not locked - Yes, I have cleaned the control head contacts - Yes, I have swapped the control head cable Now that those are out of the way, I have an 857 I just got that supposedly, HF worked and VHF/UHF worked but had low TX power. It's been sitting in a closet for a while. I'm not sure if it's an 857 or an 857D and I'm not clear on how to tell the difference. I've powered it up, and I find that most of the buttons don't work and other than the power up sound and a beep if I use power or the mic FST button, there's no sound. Short press on power or press of mic FST both get the running man and fast tune (and the associated beep). The knob works. The radio powers up in 40m and I can scroll up and down the band. I'd expect to get at least some static sound. That's all I can do. No amount of button fondling causes anything else to happen. I've seen the discussion about resistor issues on the board near the mic connector. I don't see any damage on visual inspection in that area. I've also tried both with and without the mic connected (an MH-31). No change. I've also tried the power it down, press power to drain caps, short power wires together to fully discharge, etc. No change. * I have attempted factory reset with home pressed on power up. The radio does not reset. I've watched a YT video showing the process and the additional sound that is heard on a reset does not occur. On a related note, my display looks a little different in content than the video I watched (https://youtu.be/E8zh_kjHrz0). Mine shows power supply voltage, the s-meter at left is showing full scale S9++ and shows MTUNE, in case any of that is relevant. Nothing else is connected to the radio beyond power and the mic. Ideas? Thanks! Steve, KF8KI

How to assemble a Collins filter + Board for FT-857 and save $$$!!! 13
You can buy a "bare" Collins 500hz CW filter for about $100 and solder it yourself to an FT-857 board made by Artur, SP6AB. I got mine for $16. Contact Artur to confirm availability. Collins CW filters are showing up overseas. But you must search and carefully check out the vendor. Collins SSB filters are also available. I hope this helps someone save some money. I did this and I'm happy. --73, Howard, W6ZZ Here is the search term for a Collins 500hz CW "bare" filter: AOR MF-500 500Hz MF Series Collins Mechanical Filter 526-8693-010 73, Howard, W6ZZ

MC-50 microphone to FT857 RJ-45 adapter? 3
I'm looking to replace the stock handheld mic on my FT-857D with a Kenwood MC-50 desktop mic. Does anyone have instructions or plans or schematic for wiring? I have 4 pin and RJ-45 connectors. Has anyone had any luck with this setup, and is audio quality affected? Carl N4LPD

FT 857d clicking noise 10
I just got an 857d and am getting to know it. One thing I have noticed is a click type noise on CW receive when you are tuned on frequency and the green receive light changes to blue. I understand the light changing to blue is to show you that you are in the centre of the passband and are on received frequency. This is a good indicator but I get this click noise that follows the CW when the light switches to blue. It's this normal for these rigs? Thanks 73 Don ve3ids

FT-857/897 with ALE
Because Automatic Link Enable scans multiple frequencies, these are not ideal radios because of the wear and tear on the PA filter relays To prevent this you can configure your scan groups into segments so you can scan at lease some of of the channels some of the time The bands are as follows 0.1Mhz - 1.8 MHz 1.8 MHz - 3.4 MHz 3.4 MHz ¨C 6.9 MHz 6.9 MHz ¨C 13.9 MHz 13.9 MHz ¨C 20.9 MHz 20.9 MHz ¨C 33 MHz 73 Steve VE5SR

Low power output (<1W) on 40,80 & 160M only. 18
Has anyone run into this before? My 857D has very low power output on 40,80 & 160M only. The radio draws very little current on the bands with the problem 100W on other bands. Rx okay on all bands Did a full reset Did the relay clean procedure I can't find any path in the relay switching that only includes those bands.
