Re: Zebra problem: lcd spare part will all the pixels

I bought one from Ham Radio Outlet years ago. The eBay item is a lot cheaper. It is about $200 from HRO. I don't know about quality of the eBay item, but it looks to be an exact replacement.

I don't plan on getting rid of my FT857D. It is a great mobile/portable rig. I use mine as an IF rig on 144 and 432 MHz for microwave and millimeter-wave transverters. I also use an FT817ND, but the 857 has a few more bells and whistles, like DSP, which really comes in handy.? A lot of microwavers are also using the IC-705 now, but I'm not ready to spend that much money on a rig just yet. The one thing I've wished I had is a spectrum display. I think I've figured out how to do that with a Raspberry Pi and a small display, and a Funcube dongle.

Re: Zebra problem: lcd spare part will all the pixels

Hi,
Any chance of a better link ?, the eBay number doesn't work anymore.
Or a good description & picture of the
Item.
Hi Marty,
number still works for me (ebay.it) but try these links:

I didn't buy it (yet) but see Ronnie's reply.

Sorry for the late reply.? I pulled a good one from a dead 857D.? Installed and it did a FACTORY RESET.? So I cannot claim to say for sure a blank one would be OK.
?
I would expect that the ROM in the CPU would dump a basic setup to the IC on a Factory Reset.? But that is a guess.

Yes, I thought others would like to know.? They are a 100% perfect replacement.
?
Enjoy that 751A.? I have used and repaired many.? They just don't make them like that anymore.? The audio is just brilliant.??
?
Like the Yaesu FRG-7 ( with upgraded IF Filters) you cannot beat the sound out of a set like that.

Re: Zebra problem: lcd spare part will all the pixels

Thank you Ronnie,
good to know.

Probably a wise investment if you plan to keep the radio, and why not to pass to a possible seller anyway.

Back to my new acquisition, albeit being a fervent Yaesuist, I am testing a IC-751A in these days(heretic!).

Shopping filters/TCXO and so on, that was when I run into the lcd.

Hi Giuseppe.? ?YES !? ?I purchased 4 of them last year.? I have installed 3 of the 4 already into customer radios. No missing Pixels and are excellent.
?
They are a bit pricey... but they work Perfectly.? Easy to install and fit right onto the existing Plastic Backplane when you take the old screen off.

Zebra problem: lcd spare part will all the pixels

Wondering if anybody did try this already:
356392125204 (ebay item)

Happy with a FT-710, but not going to sell my 857D for the time being.
So far no zebras here, but who knows...

Re: No power

Hi Edward,? Hope you get back to this soon.? Exactly what my unit is doing. Definitely proved not power supply related.? The relay sounds like it is just not able to pull up and stay up. Slight flicker on display and fans.? It was intermittent for a while, would eventually power up when repeated trying, but no more just clicks,? wait for 30 seconds or so and repeat.
Thanks

Re: No power

Exactly what mine does.? Been suggested that for some reason not enough voltage or current from power supply.? ?

Does that chip have to be flashed after replacement or is it just memory ??

Or is it really just as simple as swapping out the chip and reprogramming..

ESD. A ?static discharge will wipe out the EEPROM.? 24LC128 right beside the microprocessor. ?I have done it myself on the bench here on a Cold Feb Afternoon.

?

It is winter. Dry.? Carpet in a vehicle etc. Snap.

?

Just my guess.? The IC is ?very inexpensive, but you have to be able to take it off and put another back on. Reset the Radio and program back your settings.

?

As for your issue, it could be as simple as that . Wouldn’t worry about it unless it starts happening every week.?

?

And as far as Chirp goes. ?That is a long shot blaming it on that. ??? LOL.? I would need evidence. Never heard of that before.? !

Re: Random factory reset

Bad connections between circuit boards and connectors often originates from airborne dirt rather than corrosion. Very fine particles of dirt land on the boards right where the the contacts touch the traces. Expansion/contraction of the boards and vibration slowly draw the dirt between the traces and the contacts where it wedges itself between them and is ground into crud that breaks the connection. This occurs slowly, and if a particular connection is carrying a bit of current,it can arc through the crud and cause burn damage to the contacts and board trace.? That is why pulling the board out and plugging it back in a few times often remedies the problem. In most cases a bit of cleaner solvent is wise as well, but burnishing the contacts should only be done if there is actual corrosion or arc damage seen after the cleaning. Using any cleaner that leaves a residue or lubricant is very likely to cause the problem to return within a short time.

Re: Random factory reset

Back in the 70's Sony had a service bulletin about unused contact oxidation.? TV's were still rotary tuners and set top boxes were prefered over manually changing channels and therefore not wiping surfaces.? Pretty well like the ring under a coffee cup
Collins had a procedure for rack mounted multiplex equipment.? Reseat the card twice then determine if there was an actual failure

Re: Random factory reset

Do you have any cables plugged into the CAT jack or data jack? That can cause problems if RF gets back into those cables.

Pull fuses and re-seat them several times - blade fuses are self-wiping when you do this. Why? Fuses? will get oxides on the blades that will cause? voltage drops. I have witnessed this myself.
