Re: FT857 + FC-40 + CAT

Hi Ryan

I am a little bit afraid about my conditions to use any kind of antenna,
this is why I'm thinking about ATU.

My initial plane was FT857+ATU FC40+Diamond CPATU Antenna?
3,5-50Mhz.?
I will consider your sugestion, but looking to 10-12-15-17-20m only
and spending less money. Will be 1 hour maximum per day using
the radio, I think.
You are right and this is "Less is Better" situation.
Thanks a lot.

I have an FT-857D with a bad processor.

Yaesu wants way too much to repair it.

The head unit and display, the VHF/UHF power amplifier board and HF amplifier board are all?good and working.

Anyone interested in any of these can contract me at:

Re: FT-857d WILL NOT TURN ON. CYCLES ON/OFF ABOUT ONCE PER SECOND CONTINOUSLY

Edited

The head sends a regular sync pulse to the radio body. If the body does not get the sync, it shuts down. The issue is with the connection from head to radio. Clean that cable contacts or even better, change the cable.?
?
The other one that can cause all sorts of weird issues if corrupt serial EPROM. It stores the calibration settings amongst other things. Q1065 24LC128. This was what used to die when? the old version of HAMLIB was released years ago. This software library used to cause too many writes to the 24LC128 - so many it eventually wore it out. If you go back through the HAMLIB update logs you can see they received a request from Yaesu to stop all the writes because it caused so many warranty repairs. Ah the good old days of DSE Lane Cove service center :)

Re: FT-857d WILL NOT TURN ON. CYCLES ON/OFF ABOUT ONCE PER SECOND CONTINOUSLY

I had the same issue with the unit installed in my vehicle, with the head mounted remotely. This would happen intermittantly, but got progressively more often. I even swapped with my other radio from my shack, and it was doing the same when in the vehicle.
Tried setting up a mains power supply in the vehicle, incase it was a power issue, no change.
Eventually traced it to the cable between the head and main unit. I recrimped the RJ12 connectors both ends, and problem solved.
I have only had the issue re-occur once since, on a very hot day, above 40¡ãC, and the vehicle had been in the sun all day, it settled down after driving for a while with the airconditioning on.
Hope that helps you.

Did they say which voltage regulators were replaced?

Before I send this back to Yaesu...again...I thought I'd throw this out there.

My FT-857d had been installed in my shack with the faceplate remotely mounted and the radio connected to a 70A supply along with all my other radios. One day I powered up the shack and the 857 would light up, relays clicked then it turned off. It would run this cycle forever if I let it. So I looked for possible faulty connections. I cleaned the RJ-11(?) on the back of the faceplate and put it back together and it worked, for a week. Then the same thing. After multiple attempts to clean the jack again, I ended up bending the pins.

?

So now I'm thinking it was a coincidence that it worked after I cleaned it the first time. I have 2-3 of every cable for the radio. I opened up brand new cables and nothing changed. I cleaned the fuses. Connected the radio to 2 different batteries for power. Nothing. So I sent it back to Yaesu suggesting it could be an issue with the RJ-11 jack. I only sent back the face plate because when I tested the face plate on a friends radio, the radio didnt work either. Also because I am cheap and wanted to keep the shipping cost down. After a while I got the radio back and they said they had replaced the RJ-11 jack.

?

The radio behaves the same as always. Cycles on and off at about 1 second intervals. I get lights only. Nothing on the display. Today I noticed something else. If I continuously turn the VFO dial while its booting up, it will stop cycling while I'm turning it. It will stay lit up but the radio never really comes on.

?

I've pretty much exhausted all the possibilities of an external connection issue. With all the extra cables and power sources I have, I'm pretty sure thats not the problem. I'm not able to test the control head on another radio at this time. My friend has packed away his radio to move.

?

I'm going to send the whole thing back to Yaesu, unless someone here has a miracle solution.

Thanks

Mark K3MRK?

The DOT and DASH inputs on the FT857 are in series with some 1K (or maybe 10 Ko, I don't remember) resistors that are on the back of the board, but are very small. These break because they immediately have a 0.1uF (or 0.001 uF ...) capacitor to ground. I put some bigger ones (also SMD). Mine broke one by one, a few months apart ...

I have an FT-857D with a bad processor.

Yaesu wants way too much to repair it.

The head unit and display, the VHF/UHF power amplifier board and HF amplifier board are all?good and working.

Anyone interested in any of these can contract me at:

I wouldn¡¯t think the 25 watts out in battery mode would be much to worry about on 40m through 10 meters, no one else in the park would go near me during my live reports of the solar eclipse!
