Re: How to assemble a Collins filter + Board for FT-857 and save $$$!!!

Dang. I work for Raytheon. Collins is one of our companies. I should probably ask them if they have NOS stock I can purchase.

How to assemble a Collins filter + Board for FT-857 and save $$$!!!

Edited

You can buy a "bare" Collins 500hz CW filter for about?$100?and?solder it yourself to an?FT-857 board?made by Artur, SP6AB. I got mine for $16. Contact?Artur?to confirm availability. ?

Collins
CW filters are showing up overseas. But you must?search and carefully check out the vendor. Collins SSB filters are also available. I hope this helps someone save some money. I did this and I'm happy.??

Re: MC-50 microphone to FT857 RJ-45 adapter?

Hi Carl,?

I wired a Kenwood KMC 35 Kenwood hand mic to my 857d and have been told it sounds good. It has an electret cartridge but the MC 50 has a 600 ohm dynamic cartridge so it should be great. I am attaching the wiring for the original Yaesu hand mic and the MC 50 wiring so you can make up an adapter.?

A few years ago, I sent my FT857D back to Yaesu in the US for a repair.? While they had it, they swapped the ROM in the rig to update the 5 MHz channel frequencies to the then new FCC 5 MHz frequencies, with no extra charge.? I don't know if Yaesu still do that, or whether that's possible in Canada.

The clicking noise I was experiencing wasn't bandpass relay noise. This was if you were listening to a CW signal and not changing frequency. If you were slightly off frequency and the green receive light wasn't blinking to blue, there was no noise. If you were exactly on his frequency and the blue light was blinking to the CW note, there was a click on the leading edge of each character. It was like the AGC was too aggressive or there was noise being generated by the LED driver. A reset cleared whatever it was so it wasn't hardware related. Glad it's gone that easily! I'm enjoying the rig.?

Re: FT 857d clicking noise

Hi Randy,?

I could add the 5 channels to memory in additional slots with CW capacity but I don't know of a way to be able to use a band not just the fixed channels with just memories. We have a narrow band available to us up here in Canada now around channel 3. It goes from 5351.5 to 5366.5 and we can use a vfo in that small band. I believe it hasn't been authorized in the USA yet.?

FT 857d clicking noise

I just got an 857d and am getting to know it. One thing I have noticed is a click type noise on CW receive when you are tuned on frequency and the green receive light changes to blue. I understand the light changing to blue is to show you that you are in the centre of the passband and are on received frequency. This is a good indicator but I get this click noise that follows the CW when the light switches to blue. It's this normal for these rigs??

Thanks?

FT-857/897 with ALE

Because Automatic Link Enable scans multiple frequencies, these are not ideal radios because of the wear and tear on the PA filter relays

To prevent this you can configure your scan groups into segments so you can scan at lease some of of the channels some of the time

The bands are as follows
  1. 0.1Mhz - 1.8 MHz
  2. 1.8 MHz - 3.4 MHz
  3. 3.4 MHz – 6.9 MHz
  4. 6.9 MHz – 13.9 MHz
  5. 13.9 MHz – 20.9 MHz
  6. 20.9 MHz – 33 MHz

The radio draws very little current on the bands with the problem
100W on other bands.
Rx okay on all bands
Did a full reset
Did the relay clean procedure
I can't find any path in the relay switching that only includes those bands.
