You can try putting you AC as cold as it will go and see if the screen gets better. Or put it in the fridge and see what happens.?
I had mine fixed a few years ago and have had in a backpack since to use on the beach.?

From the sound of things, that could be as simple as a solder joint refusing to pass electrons until heat expands it.

I've brought radios back to life, cured hums, and surprised myself on several repair projects merely by reflowing solder (assuming no overt damage, lightning events, operator errors, falls to the concrete, etc.).

I'd look particularly at the battery area where you did the replacement.

This is when being a ham becomes fun -- when you get to fix something!? Far more satisfying than mere operating.

Interesting problem that is not limited to 857D. My 857D was purchased new in about 2005 and kept in my truck in South Florida. The zebra phenomena did occur the first time a couple of years later and I sent the transceiver to Yaesu for repair. It worked for a year or so and the problem reappeared. I sent it back to Yaesu and this time a different version of the display (though it looks the same) was installed. It has worked fine since then.?

What I find interesting, however, is that I have a similar zebra issue with my VX-6 until it warms up. On first power, 17 of the pixel columns were blanked out. Over a period of about two hours, ten of them self "repaired" or "healed".

This was with rig indoors at normal room temp. No transmitting, just power on, sitting idle.? I'm going to keep it on for the remainder of the day to see if any more columns come back alive.

Is this an anomaly or is this what's seen on most with the zebra problem?

This issue has been discussed over and over for the past few years. IMHO it seems that you are more likely to have the Zebra stripe issue if your radio was mounted in your car under hot sun conditions. Like any “rule” there are exceptions. If I were going to use my 857 in my car I would take it out when not in use based on the volume of anecdotally reported trouble issues.. My 857D has been housebound for 10 years or so with not problems.

I do notice on my head unit, (where it once was installed in a truck for about three or four years), I do have some zebra stripes, but after the rig has been on for about an hour or so, some or most disappear. It's random though so each time I get slightly different results.?

I use the separation kit. The head is on my desk and the body well ventilated. I had a extra big fan over the chassis near the heat sink because of long cycle digital modes but since a few months I? bought an 100w amplifier so I use only 8w as out power to protect my lovely 857D radio.

I suspect stripes appear for several reasons. ?I've been baking my '857D through four car changes over the years, but have always shaded the front seat area with a windshield screen. ? The display is still normal after 12 years. ?Bought new in January, 2010.

It's not only heat.? I had the zebra-stripe problem appear on my 857D after a few years.? The rig has never been mobile, or even portable.? It's lived its life in an air conditioned house, and is kept covered up when not in use, so sun never shines on the screen.? In my case, Yaesu replaced the screen for only $70 - but that was several years ago.

I cut a little piece of clear plastic to cover the display screen and also generally cover the head unit with a cloth when I'm not using it.? Car gets quite hot but no problems in years.

My ft-857d was installed in my vehicle for years. It developed stripes. I then removed it from the vehicle and did some SOTA activations during a Scottish winter, with minimum temperatures of -5°C. The zebra stripes disappeared. Two years later and they haven't reappeared. Yesterday I used the radio portable in 26°C heat on a summit. All good!

Now, I'm not advising anyone to stick the head unit in a freezer, but I think the cold temperatures cured mine.
