I have a Yaesu MH-59A8J on my 857D and recently added and program a new repeater into my radio and now the my buttons on my mic are red. I have checked it and the radio is not locked what would cause this?

Re: Annoying problem on power up
Have you checked the short cable from the head to the main body?? Make up another one if you can or borrow one to see if the problem clears up.?

Hi Mitch,
thanks for your reply. The mystery tightens. I called Yaesu tech support today and they suggested to reconnect the original microphone to the radio, instead of my Heil Pro 7 headset, no dice same issue.
If I leave the power supply on my FT-857D works normally from the moment I turn it on.
Thought to share this with you, the group and Hank Lambert that is trying to figure out the problem with us.. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Stefano,
That kind of behavior would lead me to think it is a bad solder joint somewhere because of the rig having to "warm up". The question would be where. You might could isolate it to a area using a plastic or non-metallic tool by pressing slightly in various ares of the boards. Visual inspection may help as well, but there are mounted parts on both sides and removing a board would be necessary to examine both sides. SMD connections will develop the same type of cold joints that through hole parts will..

FT-857D no TX for 10 minutes
Hi there,
I have question for you, when I turn on my FT-857D (2014) it won’t transmit for 10 minutes then it will work normally. Did you ever experience something like that? Any idea of what can be causing the issue?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Wind a coax choke at or near the antenna feed point in the car.? Mine is 8 turns on an empty plastic peanut butter jar held together by zip ties right before the rear truck lid mount.? Works great!? Some of my longest contacts have been /M with 100 watts..... today got Togo :-)
Good luck.

Thanks Malcolm,? Sadly virtually all of the tram and trolleybus lines have long ago been discontinued in the USA.? This happened when we went car crazy beginning in the late 1940s/early 1950s, and residential living spread to the suburbs obsoleting the tram and trolleybus line routes.? I miss those days though enjoy the modern convenience more.? HIHI, Phil / K4PO

Hi Cliff This lives connected to the PC but i have tried unplugging it no change , It had been working perfectly for ages then one morning in the car switched it on no buttons but all the rotary was fine . I have moved recently so where all my paperwork books for the radio have gone nuff said they wont get found until the weather warms up packed up in the Garage ( soon to be Radio Shack ) in boxes i also have no scan up and down on the mic the fast/power button works but up/down no it is part of the same problem i think the apin is the mic plugs directly into the radio that places the problem in the radio not the head . Oh well .. Thanks Pete G6NJR

Re: Annoying problem on power up
Pete,
By your description it sounds like there is a thermal problem with a component or connection. As suggested, I would try the radio with ALL cables disconnected, except for power. If it works from a cold start, it may be some sort of interference or feedback on the cables. If it still needs to "warm up" before the knobs and buttons work, it would be the radio.?
One other thing you can try is to see if the problem happens when the control head is directly connected to the radio and/or it happens when connected through the remote cable.
I hope this helps. 73,

Does anyone know where I might be able to find the protocol between the radio and the control head of my Yaesu FT-857D? I need to do a frequency display and a few other things while the radio is remoted in the trunk. I don't want to run that much extra wire to use data from the CAT port.

Re: Annoying problem on power up
Pete
I've seen my 857D do some silly stuff if I power up while it's still connected to a computer that's also turned on.? If you're doing something like that, unplug all data, etc cables before turning it on.

Afternoon all on this wet and windy day here .
Right my FT857D is being a bit of a pain right now .
I can power it up no problem at all but that is the ONLY button that
works for at least 10 minutes but all rotary controls work perfectly it
will Tx/Rx no problem i can change frequency but not band then it
will suddenly start working correctly .
If i then turn it off providing i turn it back on within a few
seconds it is fine but leave it 30 seconds and it has to go thru the
no buttons thing again ..
Anyone got any ideas i am in the UK so the talk to the tech
department bit is not viable .
Thanks Pete G6NJR
