Re: Zebra Stripes fixed in my 857D

Any pics? ?I “fixed” mine by buying another $160 lcd module... but I don’t think I threw away the “bad” one as I have two 857’s and you never know when you will not be able to get parts.

Re: Need help

I had this same issue with a Kenwood. I was able to fix it by using Deoxit on the fuse prongs and the holder sockets. Otherwise, just cut them off and replace them. They are not really defective, just oxidized. Perhaps a higher quality holder would have contacts that wont oxidize.

Can't you just replace the fuse holders, why do you need Yaesu Tech?

I have checked and there is a voltage drop across the fuse holder. Does anyone know the link to? ?Yaesu Tech Support in Ca?

Carl, Remove both fuses, thoroughly clean the contact surfaces on both fuse ends, and the fuse holder contacts with an abrasive cloth then reassemble.? It is very common for in-line fuses to develop a bit of corrosion at the contact ends.? Also, not a bad idea to replace the fuses as internal resistance may also be involved.? Fuses are to protect the wire, they do nothing for the radio other than preventing wire overheat or fire.? ?I remove those fuses entirely for base station applications, and for mobile connect the positive to a vehicle fused battery circuit if possible and negative through a blade type fuse at the ground contact end.? Those fuse holders are available at most auto parts shops.? Fuse holders should be as close to the power source as possible.? you have found you're easy to fix problem.? Good news is the radio hasn't decided to do a low voltage shutdown thus far.? Regards, Phil / K4PO

Call the Ca number.
Pull the fuses and clean them. Sand the contacts. Put a jumper across the fuse and try the radio bypassing the fuses and see what the voltage is.

It might be worth putting a volt-meter across each fuse-holder to check for a posible voltage drop across the fuse and/or holder .

Are you using the same inline fuses in each scenario? Many users have reported issues with the fuse holders.?

Check the fuses in the fuse holders
?Also use a volt meter to check the voltage at the power supply when idle and under load. Double check all connections. Yaesu also has Tech Support in Ca. Not sure of there hours with the virus. Good luck.

Re: problem with pkt mode in 9600 baud

Hello Miguel,

I have? one isolated interface. The rig works ok in DIG modes and in PKT modes with menu 73 ( pkt rate )? set to 1200 mode.

Ok... got it but a question for you.. when you say "isolated" interface.. is it something like an EasyDigi or Signalink?? If so, you're going to have deep problems trying 9600bps packet as most solutions use transformers that don't offer a wide enough signal on.

But if i change the menu 71 to 9600, the rig don't output any modulation, only carrier outputs. I try a test tone in the computer and with a one handy in the same frequency in FM. and I don't have tone, only carrier.

Two things here:? Once you change your radio to be "9600", you do realize it's now listening on the OTHER input pin on the 6pin DATA connector right??? This means you WILL need a different data cable going to your TNC, soundcard, etc.? Also note that unlike simple audio or Audio Frequency Shift Keying (AFSK) approach used in 1200bps packet, 9600bps uses audio to then trigger the radio to send the bits in a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) approach.? FSK will sound like tightly packet hiss to a regular human ear:

?? #Listen to the very bottom one
??

I try in packet ax25 to stablish link in 1k2 , and it works without problem. I try to link at 9k6 ( commuting the audio rx output between 1k2 to 9k6 out pins off the rig, and the computer receive the packets, try to answer , but don't works.

What kind of problem I can have?

I think there be four issues:

?? - you're using the wrong pin on the 6pin DATA connector

?? - the isolation transformers are hurting your signal

?? - I don't think the FT857's "9600bps" support is sufficient (most radio's 9600bps support isn't btw).? Negative reports:
????? -
????? - ? (view the cached version on say google)
????? - etc

?? - G3RUH 9600bps packet requires near perfect / full quieting signals with almost zero interference to work.? This usually means the other station must be very close, running higher power, and are using directional antennas.? When it works, it's amazingly fast but it's hard to get working.? Instead, consider running something slower like 3600bps or 4800bps packet using Direwolf or UZ7HO soundmodem.? Those modes are far more tolerant of radios and paths but .. yes, they are 50% slower.

problem with pkt mode in 9600 baud

Hi everyone in the group.

I have a problem with my 857d rig.
I have? one isolated interface. The rig works ok in DIG modes and in PKT modes with menu 73 ( pkt rate )? set to 1200 mode.

But if i change the menu 71 to 9600, the rig don't output any modulation, only carrier outputs. I try a test tone in the computer and with a one handy in the same frequency in FM. and I don't have tone, only carrier.

I try to put the volume of the pc to the max. and the? menu pkt 072 ( 9600 tx gain ) at max ( 100 ). and i can hear the tone in the handy , putting the volume at max. , but at very very low level.
If I set the menu again at 1200 bauds, I can hear the tone at normal level.

YF-122S SSB Filter - New Design?

Mike Parker

Edited

Here's a weird thing. So about a year ago when I was buying my umpteenth FT-857D I noticed the SSB filter picture on ML&S's site had changed:

I emailed them to say had they mistakenly grabbed a stock image or something or has Yaesu changed the design. Martin emailed and said they only supply official Yaesu parts and this was a design change, presumably because of Collins ceasing production of their mechanical filters. The CW and CW-N seem to still be of the Collins type. Other sites USA/UK I have checked seemed to have the old picture, either becase they have old stock or they haven't checked inside the box to see the change, or didn't care!

Anyway, if you read the spec on the ML&S website, it still shows the same specification as the original Collins one, namely "10-pole Collins SSB Filter (2.3kHz/4.7kHz: -6db/-66db) for FT-817, FT-857 and FT-897." But I cannot see how it can be a Collins filter, it just looks too small for the SSB variant and if its not Collins, surely the spec can't be identical?

It looks to me, more like a MuRata ceramic type, like the built-in one but mounted on a board like the 3rd party ones you can get nowadays e.g.

Any ideas? I suppose I could email Yaesu/Yaesu UK, but I am not too bothered, Haydon Communications had stock of the Collins one so I purchased that. Just curios.

Re: FT-857D Discontinued By Yaesu - Was a Great Run

Mike Parker

I was buying the parts in stages to cheaply get back on the air after having a 6-ish month break (I often buy new Yaesu rigs and sell them to fund another - but had a gap in the cycle). I must have owned at least 6, closer to 10 FT-857D radios since being licenced in 2008. I had a new YF-122C and YF-122S and had just ordered the TXCO-9 when I saw this thread. I went to ML&S and they had on the FT-857D product page they had just got their last batch ever from the factory, so I had to accellerate my timetable and manged to get one! So I am lucky to have one of the last ones of the production line and as this radio will certainly go down in history as a classic, I will never sell it.
