WTB: FT-857

Bob

Hi, All,

I like my FT-897 very much, but most of my ham operation in future is likely to be mobile, and so I could better use the smaller size and lesser weight of the FT-857.

Is there anyone in the UK who might be interested in an exchange deal? I am located in North Norfolk.

Please reply off-list by PM.

Regards,

Bob, G8IYK

FT-857D and lower TX power outside of HAM Frequencies

Hello folks,

New to the forum.

I just purchased the FT-857D and did the frequency expansion mod to see what this radio could do on the bench. What is interesting is, when putting the radio on a dummy load and meter, I see that the TX power drops off fairly fast when you get above 463Mhz to around 3 watts output at 467Mhz. The same occurs when you get much lower than 430Mhz.

Additionally, on VHF it will do the same, albeit the bandwidth/range seems wider. Is this what you are all seeing? Have not tested HF output yet...

I assume this is a limitation of the PA and filters which are tuned for HAM band only. Or do you know if the drive is microprocessor controlled which is limiting PA as you drift outside of designed frequency range?

I don't plan on using the radio for anything outside the band, as I have type accepted radios for business band I'm licensed for, etc. It was primarily for *just in case* emergency and the idea of seeing what this radio can really do.

At any rate, I'm curious to see what power output you're seeing in a dummy load on the test bench to see if this is expected behavior.

Thanks,

-J

Re: Battery issues - FT-857 mobile with ATAS-120

Yes, thank you.? Douglas Wyman was kind enough to remind me.? That is what I get for attempting to go straight from memory instead of visiting the manual before posting.

I do vividly recall that for the ATAS-120 to work well, though, that both the radio and antenna need to be at the same, lowest ground potential.

In some rare cases, if the radio is mounted in the cab of a truck and the antenna on the bed, and these are not at the same ground potential, they may not work well.??

I had mine, on my previous truck, mounted directly to the cab roof and the radio to the sheet metal inside the cab against the back.??

Unlike other radios, the FT-857 does not have a ground lug, and you may correct me if I am wrong here, and I am sure someone will, but the grounding comes from the mobile mount.??

Actually the brown wire is a battery sense. It changes the power out to conserve battery when it is energized. The atas120 is controlled by a dc voltage imposed on the coax line. Less than approximately 9v go down more than 9v go up.?

The brown wire when connected to ground reduces output of the 857D to 20 watts automatically.

Re: Restoring 146-148

I also have a Japanese 857 on my hands. Were you able to open tx for repater use and open up the upper segment of V/H for TX? I did mod it with the well know configuration, but no luck.I do realise this is an old thread.

Re: Restoring 146-148

Old thread. I also have a Japanese FT-857. The MARS mod 888I88III does not unlock anything. Actually removing the zero ohm resistor at at position 3 (fornt front to back) makes me loose WIDE RX on V/H.

Did anyone get his Japanese rig opened up for TX on the upper segments V/H? I need TX in the upper segments in order to be able to use repeater in my country (CE).

Re: FT-857d PL ISSUES

Do you have a programming cable hooked to the radio?
I had this problem and found it to be the RT systems programming that was connected to my radio.
Unplugged the cable and the PL tone frequencies were correct and radio worked fine.

Re: FT-857d PL ISSUES

Yes that seems to be my best fix for now. Thank you...Tony

Re: FT-857d PL ISSUES

Hi Tony,

If you have the ability to restore the programmed frequencies easily I would do a factory reset and reprogram the frequencies and see what you get.

Any chance that the repeaters input pl tone might have been changed for possible interference issues?

FT-857d PL ISSUES

For some reason now, my PL frequency is off by one setting. So, for example, on both 2 meters and 450mhz if I want to transmit using a?

?PL? of 114.8 I must tune to a PL freq of 118.8? to key a repeater up.

Any thoughts on this??

Thank you

Tony

Re: WSJT-X FT-8

I finally got it to work. Here are my settings below. I am using a
SignaLink USB interface and an RT systems interface cable for CAT control.

If we are speaking of the protocol settings for the cat connection for the

The correct settings, as tested successfully with various other programs,
do not work with the WSJT-X. I have tried with both a Bluetooth and a
USB/Serial interface. (These work with other programs as well.) The WSJT
does work with my TS-2000. This is with a Mac. I have read elsewhere that
the same failure of WSJT to control the FT857 & 817 is seen in Windows.

I¡¯d be interested myself. I suspect they be the same for the FT817 as well

Did anyone ever figure out the settings for the 857 using a SignaLink and WSJT-X ?
