building an external power supply for VFO 122.. well actually just restoring existing power supply 4
Just to have something new to say here.... I was watching a video on the D Lab YouTube channel in which Terry Dayton shows building a simple power supply to power a Viking 122 or Heath VF-1. After thinking about it and where I would get transformers and choke... I remembered I had some Heath utility power supplies from hamfests (such as for HW-101). I knew I sold one of them at one of the last hamfests before the Pandemic.. but still had a couple left (got them cheap, left over from the Institute for the Blind old radios when the equipment was retired). I assume are seen at hamfests.... Anyhow, there were various models of the PS23... later ones don't suit. I have one that is later which is not suitable... but the version A I do have as well will do the trick nicely But early ones DO offer selectable 250/300 volts and 6.3 for filaments... later versions are 12 volt filament. So... for the cost of some capacitors and about 7 diodes and a few resistors I SHOULD have a p.s. that can power my VFO 122 - keep it warmed up and less drifty? before the transmitter is turned on. This is a warm-up project before I tackle one of the two Viking II xmtrs I acquired during the Pandemic.... I am not quite ready to tackle them yet.. post-surgery here so lifting 80 lbs. is not yet in the cards... but I will get one on the bench and ready to work on before I have to endure any follow up medical stuff. Hoping to see the Viking II on the air by late Autumn. I have other EFJ gear (in line for attention!) that I can use the external p.s. supplied 122 on as well (Challenger, Adventurer, Navigator). Anyhow, I thought I would throw this out there into the ether in case there was interest piqued and anyone is wandering a hamfest wondering what might be useful. And...I can use it (different pin out on the octal cable of course) on my Heath VF-1 once I finally get to the DX-40 rig restoration (do I really have two of them ?... not sure what lurks under my staircase sad to say....). A good idea for the Heath VFO-1 since the small rigs have pretty persnickity power offerings and borderline at that I believe. 73 Brian VE3HI Toronto ON

Transplant Touch Tone Pad EF Johnson 5100 ES portable Model 3 ---> Model 2
Hello All, Has anyone transplanted a TT pad from an ES5100 model 3 to an ES5100 Model 2? I know that to work in the Model 2 the TT pad must be enabled in the options / firmware. Not able to find any ES5100 model 3's in VHF and there seems to be an abundance of ES5100 model 3's around in the 700 / 800 MHz flavor. OR Would it be easier to remove the 700 / 800 MHz boards from the model 3 and install the VHF boards? Thanks Charlie

building an external power supply for VFO 122.. now remote VFO enclosed in new case with added features 2
Terry took a VFO (likely from a Ranger) and made IT external as a utility VFO for various EFJ gear etc...his improved VF0 122 he calls the VFO 123. External... 3 videos (this time you get the URLs... HI). Sort of redundant.. the later recent (August 2022) video on the external PS for VFO 122 or a VF1 just serves the purpose of addressing use of VFO 122 for Heath or EFJ...where the rig PS is lacking/weak (Heath) or to overcome drifting via warm-up state. Of course the drifting is solved by A - the operator moving his VFO when he spots and notices he is not where the receiver is or B) the operator on the OTHER side of the QSO moves his receiver (RIT) to 'new frequency' or lacking RIT adjusts his receiver (aka tuning)... and we all merrily move around the original frequency.... Ignition Sense Settings 5300 ES and 53SL ES
Hello All, I hope that you are well. I am programming some 5300 ES and 53SL ES mobiles using PC Configure 2.18.16. I am looking for the setting where one can choose if the radio needs to be connected to a powered ignition cable to turn on or if the radio can be turned on via the front panel with NO powered ignition cable connected. It looks like a powered ignition cable is needed at all times to turn the radio on. Am I missing something in the programming software that would allow the radio to be turned on with NO powered ignition cable connected to the radio. Thanks for your help and support. Hello 15
Just joined this group. I don't know why I had not done so up until now as I own a lot of Johnson gear. My friend WA5VGO got me interested in finally restoring my Viking 500 transmitter which I have owned but never used for a very long time. (I gave one of my Viking 500s to Darrell , wa5vgo a very long time ago and he thinks it is one of the best transmitters he has ever owned. (We both own Collins KW-1 transmitters.) I am also in the middle of restoring a Viking II transmitter a ham gave me a few months ago. Once that is complete, I'll get onto restoring the 500. (I'm also restoring a National NC-303 receiver I recently picked up for a super bargain too. I plan to mate that receiver up with the Viking 500.) At any rate, the group has one new member. Is there a standard adapter circuit for interfacing the Challenger Rx Audio to a Microphone input (much lower Z) 2
As the Challenger one piece radio chassis has no Low Z Audio output -to easily couple to a microphone input (for a cheaper Repeater system)- has anyone brewed a simple Hi to Low Z adapter/isolater to keep the Rx Audio un loaded while providing a Low Z output at or adjustable to a sister Challenger Mic Audio input level?

New to me Viking II 24
I picked up a Viking II with the VFO at Hamvention this weekend. It is getting paired with an NC-300 that was a few spots down at the hamfest. Is there not a Files section here? This would be a good place to have the manuals available. -- Dennis NS8H

[Johnson] Need information on original Ranger 2
Chris . . . I see most of the tubes match and are in the correct positions. I see differences with these tubes between the manual and what's actually in the radio: V9 & V10 are both 6CL6 in the radio I have instead of 1614's V11 is a 5V4GA in this radio instead of 5R4GY (both are rectifier tubes--OK?) V12 is a 6AX5 instead of a 6AX5GT (probably OK?) I won't get to look inside the VFO box until I get the radio back out but it's probably got what's supposed to be in there. I'll need to know if I need to change V9, 10, and 11 to match the manual. I am pretty sure a tube suffix like GT doesn't normally have any importance with backward compatibility but let me know if it does. I'll look at the other information and save it for future reference. I'll also get the weak resistor in the VFO box. Is it the 56 Ohm one or the 100K one in the schematic around the VFO tube? programming cable for the EF Johnson 5100 ES portables 3
Hello All, Looking for a programming cable for the EF Johnson 5100 ES portables. RFGuys seems to be out of business even though their website is still running. BlueMax 49ers "temporally" out of stock. Can't find any on eBay. Anyone have a schematic? Any other sources? -- Charlie - N6JOA

Need information on original Ranger 2
Can someone point me to a tube layout diagram for the original Johnson Ranger, please? I think there was some tube substitution done before I became the new owner of this. It is not a Ranger II. The schematic I found online has some tubes that do not match the one I have. I believe there were changes made throughout the years so what I see may be correct for the iteration of the radio. One other thing is that there is a 6146B in it. Do these neutralize with the B version of the 6146? I know some radios made in that era would not work well with the B version of this tube. I checked the various tubes that were in the radio and will need to order some. Several have low output, two of them have good transconductance but on one or more switch positions on the short checker they show a short. Some are OK for all checks. I want to make sure the correct tubes are in the radio and also in the correct locations. A tube layout picture or diagram would help. I did not open the VFO compartment, so are there two tubes inside there, including a VR tube that I don't otherwise see outside the VFO box? I did a variac slow power up and nothing burned but it did not work. I forget what I saw when following the directions in the manual to tune up but I want to work on the tubes first, then see about making other changes or repairs. If you have a good source of tubes I would like to add it to my notes and browser bookmark. Selling in the group
Selling is allowed in this group for ham radio equipment only, and at least one of the items for sale must be related to the purpose of the group. We require that anything being sold here have a price with it. So "make offer" or anything like that will not be an acceptable post here. Please indicate if shipping is included, otherwise leave it out. Also, please indicate the general location of the equipment for sale, so others will know if it¡¯s within driving distance for them, and if you're willing to meet someone X miles away from that location. If you have any information about the item, please add it, as it will make it more likely that it will sell. Just list similar to the following. This was a suggestion for the SWAN-AMATEUR-RADIO group. Just replace the Swan item with one that would fit the purpose of this group: Swan 350D, great cosmetic condition, may need new final tubes since output drops somewhat on 15 and 10 meters. Model 117XC AC power supply included. Asking $325.00 OBO. Located near Charlotte, NC. Will drive up to 25 miles from Charlotte for pickup or delivery. Call 444-444-4444, or email hamoperator@....

EF Johnson 5300 53SL Ascend ES Radio Programming Cable 2
Hello All, I hope that you are well. I have several 53SL ES mobile radios that I am trying to program. I was given a USB <---> Mic connector cable No. 023-5300-98001 (5300A0110S03576) cable with the radios. When booting up the radio the display screen shows the following V6.05 A21 then V6.12.5. Radio model No. is 242-547G-203SBAL6 I have loaded the following software onto both 32 and 64 bit windows systems PCConfigure 02.06.11, PCConfigure 02.12.06, and PCConfigure 02.18.06. the cable is not recognized by any of the software versions on either 32 or 64 bit windows systems. I am not able to locate drivers which would make the cable recognized. RFguys sells the following https://rfguys.com/collections/programming-cables/products/ef-johnson-5300-53sl-ascend-es-radio-programming-cable, however when I attempt to order it the website transitions to a page that says they are not being taking orders now. Everything that I have been able to read on the web states that all of the EF Johnson radios of this series 53SL ES are difficult to program with USB cables and that the EF Johnson programming software has difficulty recognizing USB programming cables. Several Questions. 1) Does anyone know of a source of DSUB-9 (9 pin) serial connector programming cables? 2) Does anyone have the pinouts for the DSUB-9 (9 pin) serial connector programming cables? 3) Is there a radio accessory port <---> DSUB-9 (9 pin) serial connector programming cable? 4) Based on what I observe when I boot up the radio ( V6.05 A21 then V6.12.5.) what software should I be using? 5) What am I missing in the whole process of programming EF Johnson 53SL ES radios? I have spent ~ 20 years programming Motorola, Kenwood, and Icom commercial and amateur radios. The EF Johnson products are new to me and are presenting a challenge. It's good to have a challenge every once in a while. I thought it best to consult the experts for help. Thanks for your help and support in this matter.
