Re: Free For USPS Postage: Valiant HV Transformer and (2) HV Chokes

Hello
?? Free for USPS Postage ( Large Flat Rate Box): From a EF Johnson Valiant 1 ( same transformers in the Valiant 2)
1) HV Power Transformer. Tested for Continuity, NOT Hi Pot Tested
2) HV Filter chokes, tested for continuity, NOT HI Pot Tested... Both are 4.5HY.

Hello
? One of my tekkie guys sent me these notes today, they concern the Valiant I & II Transmitter. He felt I should pass them along.
?? Issue: RF flashover on SW3B. ( rear wafer)
Details: The front and rear rotating contacts of SW 3B are fixed to the rotating ceramic "axle" of SW 3B with 6 small hollow rivets and separated by a very very small bit of ceramic.
?? The 3 rivets which fix the front rotating contact ring pass through the rotating ceramic "axle" of the switch and are terminated with swedged-over heads.?
?? The swedged-over heads of these 3 rivets are very very very close ( less than 1/64") from the rear riveted-in rotating contact ring.
?? We have found the ceramic of this very small space carbonizes over time from random RF arcing, ( in some cases, all three rivets) resulting in RF jumping between the rear and front rotating contact rings.
?? What WE did was to grind the heads off of all 6 rivets, remove rivets and the front and rear rotating ring assemblies, replace the ceramic "axle of SW3 B, shorten the rivets, re-install the front and rear rotating contact rings, secure the rivets in their? holes with thin CA adhesive. ( The wafer of SW 3B should have been a much larger and more robust RF capable switch)
?( SW3A&B is the same switch assembly used for the Ranger, Viking and Valiant.)
? This effectively increases the spacing between the front and rear rotating contact assemblies of switch 3B to a much safer 1/16~1/8".?
?? We also discovered some burned fixed contacts on SW3W&B. We replaced these as needed during rebuild.

Thank You for allowing me to post this

Transcrypt Transpeater III

I used to have a copy of the specs and user guide of the Transcrypt Transpeater III but I no longer have it. We used them in the fire service back in the day. Does anyone have an idea where I might be able to find some information on this particular piece of equipment? I spend hours on archive.org and there is some old archives of the websites but no product. I'm searching for anything relating to it, anywhere from an electronics diagram to the piece of equipment itself.

3) This "flat spot"/galling results from over-tightning of the outer tensioning nut which crushes the wavy-washer, resulting in the balls in the assembly being "dragged rather than rotating" in the input shaft concave drive recess.

1) Disassemble ball drive mechanism
2) Clean thoroughly
3) Replace the three balls ( McMaster Carr has these: 3/16" stainless balls)
4) Polish the input shaft concave ball drive recess ( We chuck the ball carrier assembly in a drill motor, polish the concave drive recess with 1000 grit wet or dry) rinse and dry.
5) Carefully re-tension ( bend) wavy washer. If wavy washer is missing, McMaster Carr has a suitable replacement.
6) Re-assembly ball drive assembly, don't be stingy with lubricant ( we use lubriplate)
7) If your Ranger does not use a "floating snubber", and the ball drive uses the front panel as a support structure, tighten the "tensioning nut" only enough so the dial pointer rotation is smooth and does not "skip" .

Re: Johnson Ranger ( I & II) L5

Hello
? One of my tekkie guys asked me to post this information for anyone who might be working on a Johnson Ranger, I or II and find L5 damaged or the coils open:

NOTE: Position of adjustable core not noted

Inductance of entire coil: 20uh ( approximately)
Inductance of lower( closest to mounting fingers): section 6.5uh ( approximately
Inductance of upper section: 14uh ( approximately)
Wire size: # 29 AWG.
No, we did not count the turns. Enough to fill each section should be close enough.
Motto: Beat to Shape, File to Fit, Paint to Match ( Thank You Dad for that bit of wisdom).

Re: Tekkie Notes: Johnson Valiant I & II

Hello

Ashley

Re: Tekkie Note: Johnson Valiant I & II

Hello
?? One of my guys wanted me to post this tekkie note concerning the Johnson Valiant I & II, modulation transformer wiring issues.
?? What we found in our rebuilds of Johnson Valiant I&II was , often, the terminal strip material which supports the primary and secondary wiring leads from the modulation transformer has carbonized ( most likely from heat), the terminal strip insulating material between the terminals becomes conductive and the modulation transformer goes up in smoke.Emoji
?? What WE did was to create a custom double spaced terminal strip, using parts from those really nice strips that are used in Johnson radios. The double spacing reduces the chances of inter-terminal? carbonizing, current flow and subsequent modulation transformer meltdown.
?? We checked, carefully, the material ( phenolic ?) to ensure there were no signs of carbonizing before creating the double spaced strip.
?? Our $02 worth.
Thank You
Ashley

Re: Information wanted on a panel meter, Johnson part # 22.2338..

It looks similar to the meter of a Viking Valiant II.
