Re: Johnson Invader 2000

Hi Jim,
I bought the Invader about a year ago and it sat on the bench and the supply (a hand full) under the bench on a roller dolly. I recently got motivated to participate in the coming AWA AM event, so got busy checking out my B&W 5100B, complete the restoration of my Globe King 500C and checking out the Invader 2000. I've corrected several issues such as replacing cracked final coupling caps and a few minor issues.

This unit is extremely clean and has the original manual (serial number 10).?

I've got some rather poor pictures but will take some better ones that can be posted on the group thing

I am working one problem right now. The scale display is driven by a steel leader coming out of the lower chassis area and has apparently slipped off a pully or idler because it doesn't change properly with the band change control which works properly.

I'll attach a few low resolution pics with more to follow.

What condition is it in?? Is it working now (as in, you could have voice QSOs on AM and SSB today)?

Can you email me pix?? Of course, it's likely that a lot of people on this group haven't ever seen an Invader 2000, so it might be fun to put the pix where everybody can see them.

For Sale Johnson Thunderbolt and Pacemaker

I have for sale a Johnson Thunderbolt and Pacemaker.? I don't think they have ever been turned on.? They are just way too heavy for me to manipulate. The Faceplates are extremely good, and no rust or corrosion of any kind inside.? They are too heavy to ship obviously.? $800 for both.? They are located near LAX.?

Hello from Mike Langner, K5MGR, new to this group

Hello everyone !

I'm just now new to this group -- I'm in "active retirement" from broadcasting.? Now I repair and restore "great old radios" from the glory days of ham radio.? Sitting across from me are a Viking Navigator and a Viking Valiant, both completely restored.? Next to them is a pair of Johnson Messengers awaiting conversion to 10 meter AM. They join a number of shelves of other brands of the great old boatanchors I'd have given my eye teeth for in my youth!? 73 all!? Mike/ K5MGR

Johnson Ball Drives, Ball issues

Applicability: Any Johnson Transmitter using the Johnson Ball Drive Assembly

1) Johnson Ball Drive assembly uses 3/16" ball bearings (3)
2) We have found cases of the balls showing a "flat spot"/galling resulting in a "glitch or hesitation" in the ball drive input shaft rotation
3) This "flat spot"/galling results from over-tightning of the outer tensioning nut which crushes the wavy-washer, resulting in the balls in the assembly being "dragged rather than rotating" in the input shaft concave drive recess.

1) Disassemble ball drive mechanism
2) Clean thoroughly
3) Replace the three balls ( McMaster Carr has these: 3/16" stainless balls)
4) Polish the input shaft concave ball drive recess ( We chuck the ball carrier assembly in a drill motor, polish the concave drive recess with 1000 grit wet or dry) rinse and dry.
5) Carefully re-tension ( bend) wavy washer. If wavy washer is missing, McMaster Carr has a suitable replacement.
6) Re-assembly ball drive assembly, don't be stingy with lubricant ( we use lubriplate)
7) If your Ranger does not use a "floating snubber", and the ball drive uses the front panel as a support structure, tighten the "tensioning nut" only enough so the dial pointer rotation is smooth and does not "skip" .

Re: WTB Meter Bezel for Valiant II

Paul Hello
?? We sent you some information as to a possible fix....? We believe that meter is basically a Simpson model 1227, most likely a 100ua movement, with custom scale and painted grey
?? We believe any simpson model 1227 meter ( lots of them on Ebay) will yield a nice new meter cover that you can paint grey and transfer to your Valiant.

I don't have a diagram, but I can tell you that the programming cable uses the top 3 pins plus the ground pin lower on the connector. The top 3 pins are USB related and not populated on any standard 5100 or XTS/Jedi connector.?

You might also join the Johnson list at . Click on the Directory of Lists
on the left menu then drop down to Johnson and join the group.

Both groups are rather quiet. The archives are difficult to search through on
the lists. You can view subjects posted by month and can't do a global
search in the archives.

The group archive can be searched globally, but there are only 155
messages so far.

You can also post in the amateur-repairs group.

/g/Amateur-repairs

which has a lot of members, though it's not focused on any one brand or model of
radio. It should be amateur-radio related though, to post there.

WTB -- Invader 2000 at Dayton

On another group there's a Dayton list started. ?Is there a buyer here who can take a credit?card or is willing to do PayPal F&F and can arrange shipping to central Texas (78758)?
?
I want a Johnson Invader 2000.? Not the plain old QRP Invader, but the Invader 2000.?
?
I want the QRO Invader.? I need it to be cosmetically nice, but it doesn't need to be perfect.? I prefer that the exciter be working.? The finals can be illin' because I'm comfortable fixing / rebuilding that part. What I'm willing to pay depends on what's non-functional,?and whether the chrome-plated power?supply is intact-- or whether the power supply is there at all.? I don't want to do a 100% concours, Colins 10 of 10 restoration of restoration-capable, because functionally, the part that matters is the part that people see when they look at the operating console and hear when I'm on the air.
?
This is cross-posted to the repeaters and boatanchor?lists.

Re: Johnson Viking Valiant 2 - voltages

Johnson Valiant AC Line Fuse blowing????????????????

Our experience led us to the conclusion that in the case where AC line fuses continued to fail ( with all tubes removed), the issue was with the Valiant HV transformer.
?? Over the time we rebuilt Valiant II units, we experienced several HV transformer failures, almost always shorted windings in the AC primary windings.
?? This experience led us to install a separate AC line fuse for the HV transformer, the fuse located in place of the interconnect socket.
