Hi John,
Yes, the Viking II came from you!!!? I really got going on it
soon after getting it from you.? Then my dog had a running start
on a 30 foot retractable leach.? I wound up with a broken hip.
That happened February 9th of this year.? I was in one hospital
after another for three months and wound up with plenty of
complications.? I got kind of finally back to normal in June, so
now I have plenty of catching up to do with my radio projects as
well as building a home for one of my daughters.? The front panel
of the Viking II is all masked off ready for painting.? That
switch hole is totally gone on the front panel.? Once I air brush
the paint with the paint I had matched for it, you will never be
able to tell the hole was ever there.? Same for the cabinet.? I
had paint mixed for it too.? Indeed when finished, I'll send you
pictures.? You will never recognize it.? I changed out some caps
and replaced the audio driver transformer plus checked the tubes
and replaced those that were missing.? Your Viking II will be a
real show piece when finished.? Hope that will be soon and on the
air.? (I picked up a Heathit VF-1 VFO for it and plan to use the
VFO plus crystals when on the air.? Hope all is well with you.

This is John Saxon, K5ENQ,? now in
Dickinson TX.? If memory serves me well (which it
frequently does not :-) you purchased a Halli HA-5
from me last fall, and I think I gave (or sold?) to
you that Viking II then as well.?? I hope you are
doing well, and it sounds like you continue to enjoy
the BA projects.? If it wouldn't be too much
trouble, I would appreciate a picture of the Viking
when you are done.
We now live in an apartment in
Dickinson.? No ham radio at the moment.? Got rid of
all my BAs.? I do have an old K3, usable but needs
some clean-up.? I have also started playing with
some dongle SDR receivers.? Antenna is the problem.
Anyhow, wanted to say 'hi' and glad
someone is working on the Viking II as it deserves.?
Oh FYI, it was given to me, I paid shipping, from a
friend in California.? I think that it had been at
San Diego State college where he taught.

A Viking II is a good solid built
transmitter.? I'm working on restoring one
right now.? A guy gave it to me free but
it was missing a lot of tubes plus the
cabinet was not in too good of shape.? The
front panel had a toggle switch in the
upper right hand corner controlling power
output.? The transmitter was a high school
transmitter somewhere.? I plugged the hole
with Bondo and epoxy.? I had paint mixed
for the cabinet and front panel.? Plan to
airbrush the front panel and spray the
cabinet.? The outcome should make the
transmitter look great again.? In the mean
time I am replacing out of tolerance parts
and suspected parts.? Once finished it
should perform as new.? I wanted to make
this almost parts rig shine again.? The
NC-300 will go well with your Viking II.?
They are built like a tank and are known
for their great sensitivity.? Drift is low
and stability great.? Mt friend WA5VGO
loves his Viking 500.? He thinks it is the
best all around fairly high power AM rig
out there.? That got me going wanting to
refurbish my nice looking 500. ? Keep us
posted on getting your pair on the air.

Welcome, Leland. I would love to find
a 500 and matching power supply for my
shack. I just picked up a Viking II at
Xenia along with a National NC-300. Both
are in very nice condition!
I have not made my way to Collins
gear yet as it is always so expensive.
Maybe one day, but not now.
